While health has always been one of the cornerstones of 4 H, clubs across Kentucky will ramp up their health efforts during the 4 H Health Month in February to encourage young people to develop healthy habits. Kentucky 4 H is par cipa ng in the 4th H for Health Challenge and has teamed up with the Health Kids Out of School Ini a ve and Tu s University School of Nutri on to offer this program. During the month of February, local 4 H ers will no ce more water, fruit and vegetables offered as snacks at some 4 H programs including clubs, a er school programs and school enrichment ac vi es. Young people will also engage in at least 15 minutes of physical ac vity. For more informa on on local 4 H Health Month ac vi es contact the Extension office. 2 4-H Youth Livestock Club **The Carter County 4 H Livestock Club will meet on the following days at the Extension Educa on Building: Friday, February 3 from 4:00 5:00 Monday, February 13 from 4:00 6:00 **Monday, February 20 (President's Day Note: this is a schedule change from what was in your le er.) 12:30 the Extension Office Lunch will be provided. Morehead State University Farm Tour 2:30 4:30 A limited number of 4 H members can ride in the Extension van, but will need to stay for the horse tour from 4:30 6:30. Contact the Extension Office if you are interested in riding in the van. ** Kee s Farm Service will be hos ng a clinic on nutri on, grooming, and other livestock show related topics on Tuesday, February 21st from 5:00 7:00 at the Boyd County Extension Franks Building at the Boyd County Fairgrounds. 4 H members will earn 2 hours of cer fica on from a ending this event. Sonshine Homeschool 4 H Club Mee ng Schedule Change The February mee ng will be on Tuesday, February 9. Club members will meet at the Extension Office at 4:00 for their business mee ng before going to All Creatures Veterinary Care for a tour. 4 H Council February 5:30 Extension Office The 4 H Council is looking for new members. Club leaders, parents, grandparents, and community leaders are invited to par cipate in the 4 H Council. The Council helps plan and evaluate 4 H events. If you would be willing to help out, let us know. We are looking for an adult male volunteer to a end 4 H Camp this summer. If you are interested in applying please contact the Extension Office. Teen Summit registra on forms and fees are due by February 3. 4 H Projects 4 H project days are quickly approaching! Check out the irst page to see when projects are due at your school. Here are some tips for blue ribbon projects: * Make sure to follow the directions for your project and complete the required the number of activities in your project book. (This information was included in the paper stapled to your project book.) Make sure you turn in your project book with your project. * Don't wait to the last minute to start on your project. They will take a while to complete. * Make sure your name (or the identi ication tag and class number, if applicable) are on your project. * For art projects If applicable, make sure they are framed correctly. Don't forget to complete your artist statement. * For projects requiring posters Make sure they are neat, colorful, creative, and contain information about your subject. Don't forget to include your sources on the back of the poster. * Electricity If practical, mount your circuits or other projects securely on a piece of wood. Make sure your connections are tight and safe. * Fashion Magic Remember you're not sewing and making out its, just coordinating them. Make sure to take pictures with the different out its you have put together. * Photography Make sure you mount your pictures on the appropriate size mat board. Entries with one picture go on 10x16 mat board and entries with multiple pictures go on 16x20 mat board. Each class should be on it's own mat board. Mat board is available at the Extension Of ice. (Don't wait until the last minute to get it though, in case we run out.) Don't wait until the last minute to print your pictures. (Technical dif iculties do happen.) *Woodworking Make sure to use lots of sandpaper and sand your project so it is nice and smooth. Also, don't forget that you need to paint, stain, or varnish your project. Remember, if school is canceled on your project day, bring your project to school the next day school is in session. 4 Are You Ready for 4-H CAMP? Hey, CAMPERS! Summer will be here soon and it is time to sign up for 4-H camp. Here s the scoop! WHEN: May 30 June 2, 2017 WHERE: North Central 4-H Camp in Carlisle, KY (Nicholas County). We will leave from the Carter Extension Office at approximately 9:00 on Monday and return around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. The complete camp registration packet is due by May 1 st. Send this form in today to request your packet. WHO: Any Carter County child between the ages of 9 and 14 can attend 4-H camp. COST: $150 *** Save $10 when you pay and turn in all registration forms by April 21 st.*** 4-H camp scholarships are awarded based on 4-H participation and civic engagement. To apply for the scholarship, complete the 4-H Camp Scholarship application. ALL applications require a $20.00 deposit. Deadline for all official registration packets will be May 1 st. (After you return this application a more detailed camp registration packet will be sent to you.) Spots are limited and will be filled on a first come basis. No deposits will be returned for cancellations after May 8 th. Campers who s paper work is not turned in by May 1 st, may not be permitted to attend camp. 5 OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 4-H CAMP: Details of what to bring, camp rules, and all the forms to be filled out will be mailed to everyone who registers. The contents of the registration packet must be returned by May1st. Late camp applications may not be accepted. The $20 camp deposit will hold your spot until May 1st. Camp Counselor interviews will be held on March 28th at the Extension Office.
