1 4-H UPDATE Midway District 4-H Newsletter4-H Newsletter March 2018 In 4-H, we talk about and work toward making the best better. Our house watched a lot of the Olympic games in recent weeks and I am always amazed by the enthusiasm and performance of these athletes who work day in and day out to improve. I m also the mom at heart who holds her breath a bit when someone falls and, while I may not want them to win, doesn t like to see anyone injured. My favorites are those who have either overcome odds to be a part of the competition or who falter on one of the biggest stages but hold their heads up while a tear of frustration slips down a cheek. Success in life is much the same; we often get knocked down and it is hard to pick up our chin and face the world but we have the opportunity to learn every time. For 4-H members, have you started working on a project to learn more than you did last year? Did you learn something about yourself at 4-H Club Day? Follow up your good intentions with actions. Make the Best Better! Life is a Grand Adventure Make every day count! Midway District 4-H Program represents Ellsworth and Russell area 4-H Clubs Ellsworth Office 210 N. 4 Policy Change! Per the Midway Extension District board meeting on , all outstanding invoices must be paid before 2018 livestock tags will be administered. In addition, we will collect the tagging fees for new tags at the time they are provided; invoices will not be sent and animals will not be tagged if payment is not available. The cost for tags will be $3.50 for beef tags and $2.75 for small animal tags. You will need exact payment in cash (or a check). Enrollment Fee update please remember if you have enrolled but not paid your enrollment fee to Kansas 4-H, you are not eligible to participate in 4-H activities (with the exception of club meetings but would not be considered a voting member). If enrollment fees are not paid by May 1, 4-H members won t be able to exhibit at the fair. May 1 has been a long-standing deadline for changing/adding projects and if not fully enrolled by May 1, this will also be the case H Club Day Congratulations to all of our Club Day participants! 5 New Family Resource Page Many of the events and paperwork most definitely the paperwork for 4-H can be overwhelming for new 4-H families! This page will be used to highlight things that may be helpful to know in regard to upcoming events, deadlines, and necessary documents. Your Club Leader is also a great resource! Why are Record Books important? Keeping accurate records is a way of life. By filling out 4-H Record Books, you are learning a practical skill that you will use in the future. Records allow us to look back, to evaluate our accomplishments and to set goals for self-improvement. Record Books and KAPs are judge on 50% project work, 25% citizenship within the project and 25% leadership within the project. Record Books are a very useful tool for completing scholarship applications! What should my child be working on now for their projects? Now is a great time to work on many project areas. For those in the Foods project, helping to plan and prepare meals or snacks is a good practice. For livestock projects, preparing barns/pens as well as reading up on feeding and care practices is important. In Photography? Take lots of pictures in different lights and at different times of year to learn about composition, balance, and lighting effects. Additionally, there are lots of opportunities for clinics and workshops in the next few months to further improve skills. Can I Still Add A Project? Absolutely! The district wide add/drop deadline is May 1st. The projects must be added or dropped through the 4-H Online program. More info on projects you may be interested in can be found on the Midway District 4-H website, under the projects tab.
6 Leaders Learning Center Review 4-H Update Important Dates/ Deadlines (Calendar) To-Do Check Club Mailbox at Ext Office Report from 4-H Council Meetings Provide any leadership changes to Extension Office ASAP Update Volunteer Renewal Information!!!! Promote/Recruit 4-H members ask a friend to attend a 4-H meeting with them YQCA Youth Quality Care of Animals Effective for 2018, both the Ellsworth County Fair Association and Russell Country Free Fair Board have implemented the annual YQCA certification to be completed by July 1 in order for youth to participate in the 4-H Premium Auctions. 4-H youth must register online and families will utilize their 4-H Online sign on to access the system. There is a small fee for either delivery method, $3.00 for the on-site course and $12.00 for the online course. The fee for either class option is collected at the time of online registration and all fees are collected and held by the YQCA Foundation for continued course development and delivery. A big change for Midway District 4-H members, in addition to the annual certification, is the addition of rabbits and poultry to the training so it will be a requirement for Midway 4-H members who want to sell rabbits or poultry in the Premium Auctions. Encourage current 4-H members to review and complete applications for KYLF, Citizenship In Action, Citizenship Washington Focus Remind all 4-H members and parents who volunteer to enroll via 4-H Online! The Extension Office has a copy of the Cloverbud handbook for each club please provide this resource to your club Cloverbud leader. Begin recruiting for the new 4-H year Provide officer and clubs leadership updates as soon as possible to the Extension Office On-site classes will be available in the Midway District on March 22 at the Methodist Education Building in Wilson at either 10:30-12 or 5:30 7, at KSU Junior Producer Days as one of the afternoon break-out sessions, or at many other locations across the state. Enroll for YQCA at: A helpful document for families is located at: 20instructions.pdf CLUB LEADERS If your club will be ordering t-shirts, a couple of important items have changes! 1) The 4-H Agent must review and approve all designs (this is NOT new but has not been followed in the last few years; it is only to ensure that the 4-H Clover is handled appropriately). 2) Brands are about relationships: Using the KSRE/4-H wordmark strengthens the impact of the 4-H program in Kansas. Beginning October 1, 2017, the co-wordmark is required on ALL 4-H marketing and publishing materials, including apparel. This requirement applies to all designs created at the local, county, district, area and state levels. Co-Wordmark Policy HERE which includes information and the application for local vendors. Please let Michelle Beran know if you have questions or concerns.
