1 COURSE PLAN LINCOLN: A PHOTOBIOGRAPHY COURSE PLAN METHODOLOGY: Lincoln : A Photobiography by Russell Freedman is represented by the abbreviation. Each weekly assignment is summarized in the first lines of the week s daily course plan. The specific daily assignments are outlined in the following lines indicated by the 1, 2, 3 and 4. abbreviations. The chapter study questions, chapter vocabulary and glossary are located in the Literature Study Question booklets available for purchase from. Answers should be given in complete written or oral sentences. We suggest reading the weekly written assignment to the student at the beginning of the week. The student should write the assignment down on a note card (to be used as a bookmark) so that he can think about the assignment as he reads. The written assignments are suggested to be started on Thursday after the reading is done and completed by the following Monday. As the teacher, be sure to review the exam now to ensure all concepts are covered with your student as he reads the book. All the Exam questions will be taken from the notes listed in these course plans and the Study Questions in the Literature Study Question booklet. Each week also includes a memory gem. If the student repeats the phrase a couple of times a day each week, he will improve his memory skills, increase his repertoire of phraseology, and prepare for one of the parts of the exam at the same time. Encourage the student to pay attention as he reads the quotation in the text, so he understands the context. He can also earn extra credit by knowing these quotations for the final., winner of the 1988 Newbery Medal is clear and easily understood biography of Abraham Lincoln, the 14 th president of the United States. Growing up with very humble beginnings, he was a self-made man, becoming president at a very challenging time in United States history. Russell Freedman makes difficult politics, social thinking, and the complex Civil War come alive in a well told story of one man and his influence on the course of a nation. You may want to have the student use each in a sentence. Study questions may be completed as the student reads or at the end of the week when reading has been completed. Memory Gem: Lincoln had a debt of $1100 which he called the National Debt but he vowed to repay every cent. He spent the next 15 years doing so. Lincoln grew up poor and had to put in long hours of physical work to help his family. He had a longing for learning and took every opportunity he had to further his education. Memory Gem: There could be no fair fight between slavery and freedom, because one was morally wrong and the other morally right. The compromise permitted slavery in some western territories and not in others. 9. Explain the Dred Scott Decision? The Supreme Court decided that Dred Scott a slave, was not a citizen and not entitled to the rights of a citizen. He was personal property of a white owner, whose personal property rights were guaranteed by the constitution, even if they were in a free state. 10. Lincoln began politics in the party and switched to the party because of what reason? He was first a Whig and then a Republican as the Republicans were united on their stance against slavery. 11. What was Lincoln s view of slavery? It was a moral issue. The government was to secure the blessings of freedom. He had difficulty making decisions and acting on them. 16. The Emancipation Proclamation essentially said what? The 13 th Amendment changes the U.S. Constitution to say that there will be no more slavery in the U.S. 19. Who killed President Lincoln? John Wilkes Booth killed Lincoln at the Ford theatre.
