2 Page 2 CLUB CONNECTION LCO 4-H has finished the school year program and will begin summer programming in June with summer gardening. This past school year our focus was on Healthy Living. We learned about good nutrition, tasted a variety of foods, learned nutrition facts and played energizer games to increase our 60 minutes a day of physical activity recommended for everyone. Special thanks to Amber Marlow and Company from LCOOCC Extension and UW-Extension WNEP Lisa and Kim for helping with the program. We couldn t do it without you. Small Animal Project Project Leader Kathy Moe and member Lilly Eytcheson attended the Poultry Workshop held in Spooner by Crystal Creek recently in Spooner. The workshop was composed of two very informative Saturday morning sessions. Session one included how to brood chicks, candle eggs and what to look for when selecting an incubator. Session two focused on how feed affects poultry health, how a chicken s immune system works, and how to read and understand an ingredients label on chicken feed. Come to our next small animal project meeting to learn more. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, June 11 from 10:30 to 12:30. We will be visiting the care facility. You are asked to bring your pet to share with the residents. Contact Kathy for more information or details. Horse Project: Horse and rider evaluations will be held on Wednesday, May 25th at the Sawyer County Fairgrounds arena, weather permitting. Evaluation meeting is a MANDATORY meeting to be able to participate in the project. Ride nights will be held on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. In case of inclement weather, the plan will be to ride on Thursday night if Wednesday there is a storm and we are unable to ride. 3 Page 3 CLUB CONNECTION Winter School afterschool Healthy Living program included six teen helpers who were trained on the curriculum and taught the lessons to 24 youth who attended the program. We covered six lessons including Eat a Rainbow, Power Up Your Day, Eat Breakfast, and others. Games played included Go, Slow, Stop Tag, Ballonapalooza, Heart Alert and Musical Hoops to name a few. Thank you to our teen helpers, Jason, Renee, Lexi, Hailey, Rheanna and Nikki. They did a great job leading all activities. Clover Power Club meeting will be held June 14th at 1 PM at Shue s Pond. Bring the flowers that you are growing and your Dairy Poster to the meeting. We will be planting the flowers and eating ice cream to honor dairy month! Winter Evergreen Club On May 14th, we partnered with the Winter Archery Club who was hosting their annual Kids Day, and we had an outing at the archery range. Youth had a chance to try shooting at targets, taking a walk in the woods to shoot at 3-D targets, and practiced safety while shooting from a tree stand. Thanks to the Winter Archers for showing us all about archery. It was a cold, but fun time.

Congratulations Mikayla Knuckey, Winter High School senior; Sawyer County 4-H Clubs, Inc. and 4-H MASC (Market Animal Sale Committee) scholarship recipient who was awarded $500 from each group toward post high school education. Mikayla is enrolled in UW-Stout, interested in field of graphic design. Mikayla attributes 4-H in helping her learn a good work ethic while the livestock project helped her learn aspects of finance, humane care of livestock and responsibilities that go into raising an animal for human consumption. She indicated, 4-H helped me become responsible and taught me to get things done on time. It has also taught me the importance of community involvement, which is a very big value in her family. Congratulations! Dog Project Leaders met to begin to standardize some of the Dog Project information on the state level. Here is a list of things that have happened thus far and where you can access the information: Scoresheets and Class Descriptions: - A new class has been added (It will be added to the 2017 State 4-H Dog Show class list). The description of that class and scoresheets for all classes have been uploaded to the 4-H Website. More than 1600 Wisconsin 4-H clubs are eligible to create and submit a flavor recipe with the top clubs named as finalists and the top flavor produced for summer Information and the application will be available in the upcoming weeks on the Foundation s website, or, feel free to contact the Foundation at (608) or info@wis4hfoundation.org Entries will be judged by a panel of ice cream experts chosen by Cedar Crest s staff. The winning flavor will be produced June Cedar Crest manufacturers more than 80 flavors of ice cream at its Manitowoc, Wisconsin, plant, and distributes products in five states. Many of the flavors now produced by Cedar Crest Ice Cream, like Shipwreck and Elephant Tracks, came into existence via prior flavor competitions.

6 Page 6 Program and Conference Opportunities WI 4-H Arts Camp provides youth in grades 6-8 an experience with six different art tracks including: music, photography, communication, theatre, culinary arts and art in nature. Arts Camp provides older youth and adults with opportunities to teach and strengthen their leadership abilities and provides younger youth the fun of a 4-H camping experience focused on the arts. The purpose of Arts Camp: 1) Encouraging expression and participation in the arts with middle school age youth; 2) Supporting youth teaching opportunities where they learn to incorporate education, creativity and reflection into the creative process; 3) increasing awareness of the arts and participation in the arts at the club level. October 1-2, 2016, Camp Upham Woods, Wisconsin Dells. Fee to participate is $37.50 (Sawyer County 4-H Clubs, Inc. pays additional $37.50 for youth to participate) and transportation is provided by a certified county adult 4-H volunteer. PLEASE NOTE: For this camp we are only accepting paper applications and forms because of a conflict between camp date deadlines and 4-H Online enrollment. Area Animal Science Day Northwest Date: June 30th, 2016, Event participation registration Due June 3, Event Location: St Croix County. Sawyer County youth wanting to attend to observe may sign up with the UW- Extension office and we will provide transportation for you to attend the event. To attend as an observer, REGISTER by June 3 by phoning Leave your name and we will contact you with details. Regional animal science educational opportunities are available to Wisconsin 4-H members. Specifically, Area Animal Science Days is a series of four day-long events held around the state in June where youth in the beef, dairy, horse, sheep and swine projects increase their decision making skills and knowledge of animals through judging and grading experiences. Events include evaluation of dairy cattle, horses and meat animals; dairy showmanship contests; hippology (the study of horses); and oral reasons workshops. In addition, each site offers a variety of workshops which may include rabbits, poultry, dogs, cats or llamas. Area Animal Science Day strives: To increase the availability of educational opportunities in the 4-H Animal Science Projects. To increase decision making skills through judging and grading experiences. To increase the knowledge of animals through breeding and market evaluation and management information. 7 Page 7 Sawyer County 4-H Youth and Family Did You Know? Vision to Action 4-H Leaders, youth and community members gathered to identify areas for consideration for the next 3-5 years regarding the Sawyer County 4-H Program to ask the question: Where Do We Want Your Sawyer County 4-H Program to be in the next 3-5 years? Participants followed a process and identified and ranked their priorities. The following is the list of the identified visions. The ranking allows Sawyer County 4-H to identify where the Leaders wish to focus their energies. At the May meeting, 4-H Leaders worked on the plan of action for #1, Communication/Marketing. Inclusivity/Involvement (7) Dairy Breakfast Posters: June is Dairy Month and we are celebrating by inviting you to submit a poster recognizing the importance of the dairy industry. Submit your poster to the UW-Extension office by Wednesday, June 15, for display at the fairgrounds during the Saturday, June 18, Sawyer County Dairy Breakfast event. Volunteers are needed between 6:30 AM and noon to help clear and wipe tables, serve platters of pancakes and general clean up. Volunteer hours may be counted in your record book. 4-H members need six hours of volunteer service during the year. Our 4-H Ice Cream booth open during the annual county fair is another great opportunity to volunteer. In 4-H we learn by doing! National Youth Science Day 2016 Drone Discovery This year s engineering challenge, Drone Discovery, engages youth with fun and educational activities related to aerospace, flight, and unmanned vehicles. This comprehensive kit is ideally suited for a maximum group size of 10 youth, ages If you are interested in leading the project for other youth, please contact Lori in the UW-Extension office and arrange to lead the project. Complete requirements for at least 1 project area 3. Minimum of 6 hours community service, documented on Volunteer Log Form. 4. Working at a community event for compensation is NOT considered Community Service. Examples of community service: a. Trash pick-up b. Working with Senior Citizens at a Nursing Home c. Helping at 4-H Food booth during fair, Barnebirkie, Birkie, Relay for Life, County Dairy Breakfast, Sawyer County Educational Fair, Fat Tire volunteer, etc. **CLOVERBUD RECORD BOOK** CLOVERBUD members are not required to complete 6 hours of community/volunteer service and they complete an age appropriate pages 4-H Cloverbud members may enter up to three items in the county fair. 10 Page 10 Sawyer County 4-H Youth and Family It s Time to #Spillthebeans about Wisconsin Agriculture! Members of Wisconsin 4-H and FFA grades 3-13 (as of January 1, 2016) are encouraged to participate in a new video contest opportunity highlighting the importance of soybeans in livestock projects. Winners can earn cash awards and be recognized at the 2016 Wisconsin State Fair! Get your smartphone, video camera or tablet ready and enter a two - minute (or less) video that addresses one of the following topics that revolve on the importance of soybeans in Wisconsin. Four video categories include: (grade is based as of 1/1/2016) 1. Youth grades 3-6: Talk about your livestock (dairy, poultry, swine, beef, sheep or goat projects) and what you have learned? 2. Older youth, grades 7-13: Talk about soybeans and the nutritional importance with livestock (dairy, poultry, swine, beef, sheep, and goats). 3. Older youth, grades 7-13: Talk about how your livestock or crop experiences in 4-H/FFA may impact your future career choices (i.e. animal science, agronomy) 4. Video Production Awards (grades 3-13): An award will be given to the video that has the highest production quality. Motion carried. Treasurer s Report: Report on file at Extension office. Treasurer s report was given. Club, Committee and project reports: Finance-The proposed budget is ready for approval at the annual meeting. Awards and Recognition: Plagues need to be updated in the Extension office. Deb and Donna will go through records and make a list of the names that need to be updated. Donna will contact MASC leaders for names to be updated on that plaque as well. This will be done in June as May is busy for all right now. Lori will contact a life guard for the awards banquet in October. Policies and Procedures: The updated by-laws were shared and will be reviewed in June to get ready for the annual meeting. Fundraising and Promotion-The Food Booth is in the early stages of being organized. Donna will put a notice in the next newsletter asking for youth volunteers to assist in planning the menu as well as choose ice cream flavors and specials. Unfinished Business: Vision to Action narratives created at the last meeting were shared. Timeline dates were added to the narratives. New Business: Hall of Fame narratives and application is done and needs to be sent electronically by May 20th. Deb S. will check her files for an MOU for the Dairy Breakfast on June 18th. The MOU is to be signed by the president of both the Farm Bureau and the LA. Donna will talk with Dale Beissel, President, about the MOU and ask about the contact person for the Dairy Breakfast. Notice will be put into the next newsletter asking for volunteers for the Dairy Breakfast. Confirmation was received that the Endowment money was received and deposited into the Quasi account. Educator s Report: Healthy Living Grant was utilized in the Hayward 4-H Cloverbud Project (20 youth) and in Winter After School Program (24 youth). Three people will be volunteering this summer in the Extension Office. One volunteer is a student at UW-River Falls majoring in Agriculture Education, one from UW-Superior graduating in December with a degree in social work and another from a college in Illinois in the field of medicine. All will be housed in the Extension office this summer. Camp: Two people signed up and there are three from LCO interested. There is no $500 upfront fee assessed to the County 4-H Leaders to participate this year. Youth Conference: Shahala White is going to the youth conference. Deb S. will be attending as a 4-H leader and chaperone. The conference is June 20th-23rd. The cost is $240 each. Motion was made to approve funding the delegate and the chaperone to attend the youth conference.
