7 Founder and Co-Director, Stanford Summer Philosophy Discovery Institute Created and co-direct a residential summer philosophy program for high school students. Provides high school students an introduction to philosophy with the long-run goal of increasing enrollment, especially minority enrollment, in college-level philosophy courses. Institute attracted applicants from across the United States and from Canada, Europe, and Asia in its first year; it doubled in size in 2001, and now enrolls 50 students. Wrote and secured a 10K grant from the Hewlett Foundation in 2000, and a 15K grant in Co-Founder and Instructor, Stanford Community Program in the Humanities Designed and helped to implement a new program to provide Humanities courses to low income members of the communities surrounding Stanford. Course began at Hope House, a residential substance abuse facility for women in Redwood City, CA, in April High School Teacher, Los Altos High School, Los Altos, CA 8/97-1/98 Designed and volunteered to teach a class entitled Philosophy and Social Justice for high school students of all grade levels and abilities. Class offered as an elective; received 100+ applications and enrolled 34 students. Sixth Grade Teacher, Rusk Elementary School, Houston, TX OTHER EMPLOYMENT/RESEARCH Senior Research Associate, The Aspen Institute 1/99 - present Contribute to planning, design, and execution of annual conference at the Aspen Institute. Author of a conference report on the transformation of the American High School, Assisted in editing of a book containing essays from a conference on The Democratic Purposes of Schooling (University of Kansas Press, 2000). Draft grant proposals, compose white papers, organize conference materials.
