Indianapolis, IN H: C: ctreas25f@yahoo.com A publication of the Lions District 25-F Inc. Off we go into the wild blue yonder flying high into the sun DGE Bill Uhrig As we prepare to start our new Lion Year and in honor of our Lions who have served in the United States Air Force I ve borrowed some words from the Air Force Hymn. Yes we are closing out the old year under the most capable leadership of DG Reed Fish as he rides off into the sun. While he rides off into the sunset we continue flying into the sun of a new day and year as Lions. I know we ll continue to serve with the same pride and vigor demonstrated in the past. As you read this myself, Lion Patsy, 1stDGE John Brown, 2 nd DGE Wayne Karanovich and other District 25 Lions will be in or on our way to Toronto to attend the International Convention. I ll be undergoing several days of training with other Governors prior to the convention convening. That training will aid me in working with you to enhance our District s continued performance we ve enjoyed under the leadership of our past District Governors. When the convention adjourns and we return home we have several events facing us. I hope you will clear your calendar and join us as we kick off the year with Organization Day at Camp Woodsmoke (The Best) on Saturday, 19 July. As an attachment to the newsletter you ll see a time table and agenda for the day. Please join us. On 23 August it will be Banner Night. There is also an attachment so you can gather the details on that event plan accordingly and make your reservation. We are looking forward to this gathering. Past experience has shown this event to be informational and rewarding. I m confident all who attend will enjoy the evening. Also as I write this plans are being formulated to decide what Club in the District serves the best pancakes. In my travels around the District, attending pancake breakfasts, I ve heard this or that Club serves the best. Well we ll find out when we engage in a Pancake Cook-Off. It will be held Saturday, 4 October at Ben Davis University High School. You ll see more on this in future newsletters. We are really looking forward to this as we are sure this will be an event you won t want to miss. Stay tuned. 2 New Leadership VDGE John Brown Greetings to my fellow Lions of District 25F. I had the pleasure of observing the induction of a new class of Lions Club Officers this past week by PDG Bob Booher. The great thing about Lion Bob is that he asked each new officer if they understood the role of their position with in the club and gave them some tips on how to be a better officer. It is an impressive sight to see so many Lions committed in service to their community and Lionism! Later in the week I am traveling to Versailles, Indiana to attend training for new club officers. The training is led by PDG Jack Salsbery and PDG Jack Buckland who always do a fantastic job. If you have not been a part of this training please take advantage in the future. It is a great way to learn more about being an officer in your Lions club and great fellowship! DGE Bill Uhrig asked me to attend a meeting to prepare for his District 25F Banner Night to be held on Saturday August 23rd. Look for more details very shortly but it will be a fantastic night as we celebrate with DGE Bill and Lion Patsy!! A special salute to DG Reed as you finish your year of Leadership in District 25F. You and Lion Janet have been great ambassadors of Lionism throughout our District and I wish all the best in the new role of Council Chair!! District 25F Vision Screening Program On May , at Camp Woodsmoke, the District 25 F Vision Screening Board met to discuss the coming vision screening year. All but three of the Board members were in attendance and we discussed many things including new screening procedures mandated by State law concerning Kindergarten and first grade. But our main concern at this time is what to do with our Vision van. The van is getting old and very expensive to operate. It costs about $5, per year to maintain and insure. The decals are fading and /or need repainting; some need to be removed as we no longer partner with the entity they represent. The cost of operating the van is approximately $3.00 per mile driven. Last year, the van made seven trips; three within 25F and four out of the District. The van, when first dreamed of was a great idea. However, no one foresaw the size this program would grow to become. The van was a great start-up tool, and in the beginning was useful in screening in the migrant camps. With the addition of Operation Kid Sight (OKS) this is no longer relevant. We are screening more young (1-6 yrs old) children than ever before. This in turn will require an increase in OKS type equipment (camera). The van is a very nice billboard but a drain on the vision screening program s budget. The money saved could be put to good use to purchase not only additional screening equipment, but also to replace some of the equipment which is getting old. The Board could see no value in keeping the van, or at this time, purchasing a new type van vehicle. After much discussion, a motion was made, seconded, and approved to stop using the van after 1 October 2014, and place it up for sale or donate it to another non-profit organization. If you know of someone who would be interested in the van, please have them contact the undersigned. Jack R. 3 Eyeglass collection The glasses that we collect her in District F are taken to PID Gene Rice & his lions club in Wanatah, IN. These glasses are processed thru the Indiana Correctional System and then taken to the Indiana Lions Eyeglass recycling center at Upland, IN. From Upland these glasses are sent out all over the world on all sorts of humanatary mission's District F has been a very good source for these glasses. Since April of 2012 I have taken 76,172 pr to the Wanatah lions. I have another 13,00 here in Indianapolis that will be taken to Wanatah soon. Glasses taken to Wanatah 71,172, glasses ready to go 13,000 for a District F total of 84,172 According to records in Wanatah District F has averaged between 60,000 & 70,000 for the past twelve (12) years. PDG Tom Slattery Eye Glass recycling Chair District 25-F VISION SCREENING TRAINING Training will be conducted on 14 July 2014 starting at 6pm. Training will be held at the Microtel Inn and Suites, 5815 Rockville Rd, Indianapolis, In. This is just East of the west leg of 465 in front of SAMS Club. Rockville Rd is also US 36. Jack R Salsbery or HONK HONK The other night, Denise and I attended the Indy-Downtown installation of officers. As part of the installation, the outgoing president, Lion Barb Simpson, read the following article. IT IS PROVEN THAT WHEN GEESE ARE FLYING IN A V FORMATION AS EACH BIRD FLAPS IT WINGS, IT CREATES UPLIFT MAKING IT EASIER FOR THE BIRD BEHIND. THIS RESULTS IN A 71% GREATER FLYING RANGE FOR THE ENTIRE FLOCK THAN IF EACH BIRD WERE TO FLY ALONE. PEOPLE THAT ARE PART OF A TEAM, GOING IN THE SAME COMMON DIRECTION, GET THERE FASTER THAN GOING IT ALONE, BECAUSE THEY ARE TRAVELING ON THE TRUST OF ONE ANOTHER. WHEN A GOOSE FALLS OUT OF FORMATION IT FEELS THE DRAG AND RESISTANCE OF GOING IT ALONE AND QUICKLY FALLS BACK INTO FORMATION TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE POWER OF THE FLOCK.. IF WE HAVE THE SENSE OF A GOOSE WE ALSO WILL STAY IN FORMATION. SHARING INFORMATION WITH THOSE HEADING IN THE SAME DIRECTION WE ARE GOING. WHEN THE LEAD GOOSE GETS TIRED IT ROTATES BACK AND THE NEXT GOOSE TAKES OVER. LIKE THE GEESE, WE ALSO MUST TAKE TURNS AND SHARE LEADERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY. WHEN GEESE HONK THEY ARE ENCOURAGING THE LEAD GOOSE AND OTHERS IN FRONT TO KEEP THEIR SPEED. LIKE GEESE, OUR WORDS OF SUPPORT SHOULD ENERGIZE THOSE IN LEAD POSITIONS, TO KEEP UP WITH THE CHAL- LENGE. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT OUR HONKING IS ENROUGAGING, OTHERWISE, WELL IT S JUST HONKING. SO THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE A FORMATION OF GEESE REMEMBER THEIR MESSAGE. THAT IT IS INDEED A REWARD, A CHALLENGE AND A PRIVILEGE TO BE PART OF A FAMILY, LIONS THAT GATHER ALL OVER THE WORLD, HEADING IN THE SAME DIRECTION. Although the article pertains to how geese operate as a flock and rely on and encourage each other by their Honk-Honk, it also applies to Lions. We rely on and encourage each other as we work together, by our selection of new club leaders each year. These club leaders then support their district leaders (DGs) who, in turn meet and support their multiple district (Council of Governors), and then continue through the ranks to the International family, 200 plus countries working together to make things better throughout the world. BUT, it all starts with that first lion in the lead, and his club (flock) honking (encouraging) him/her. To press on, fly right and remember, you are the leader, but there are many honking for you.
