Burton, Denny Bradshaw, Chief Jason Morse, Amy Helgerson, and Deb Wilkinson The Polk City Fire and EMS were awarded Mercy s Certificate of Honor on May 17 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The certificate was given for the Polk City Fire and EMS for making a difference in the community and for going above and beyond in the call of duty. Mercy also said it is proud to have the opportunity to work with Polk City Fire and EMS. Fire & Rescue Dept. Has New Web Site Check out the Polk City Fire and Rescue Department new web site It has information about the department, news, events, and much more.
2 Happenings at the Library Summer Reading Program Begins June 13 The library staff has been working hard on this year s summer reading program, Dragons, Dreams & Daring Deeds. The program runs June 13 July 30. Readers can signup June for the reading program. Crafts will be provided in the meeting room Tuesdays through Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. throughout the program. On July 18, the final program of the summer, there will be a Harry Potter Party. Chad Milosevic will be doing several art pieces including a Harry Potter cut out donated by Richard Hegna. Laryssa Smith will also be contributing several art works for the party. June 13: Storyteller Carol Taylor will have a special program at 1:30 p.m. June 20: Polk County Conservation Board program at 1:30 p.m. June 27: Join Silly Sally at 1:30 p.m. July 4: Library will be closed. July 11: Join Charity 9:30 p.m. at the Polk City Soccer fields for Stargazing. She will be talking about constellations in the summer sky. July 18: Harry Potter Party from 1:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Snacks and zoo animals will provide a day of fun. July 25 30: Turn in your reading log and receive prizes. Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed for this summer s reading program. If you are going into 6 th grade and up, you can volunteer. The library needs help with programs, crafts and other events. There will be an informational meeting on May 24 at 4:00 p.m. about the summer program. Page 2 Retirement Open House for Roberta Brown Please visit the library for refreshments as Roberta Brown s retirement from the Polk City Community Library is celebrated. A retirement open house will be held on June 8 from 4:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. in the library s meeting room. Roberta has been a librarian for the library for six years. Friends Annual Book Sale The Friends of the Polk City Community Library will be holding their annual book sale on Friday, July 15, 10:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, July 16, 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. in the library meeting room. Book donations are needed. Friends are looking for good used books for children and adults. No magazines, please. Books can be dropped off at the library (Saturday mornings are preferred) or call the Friends to schedule a book pick-up Book Club The Lovely B ones by Alice Sebold will be the book clubs discussion on June 20. On July 18, Twilight Whispers by Barbara Delinsky will be discussed. Book Club meets in the community room of the library at 7:30 p.m. Thank You Polk City Women The Polk City Community Library would like to thank the Polk City Women for their generous donation to purchase snacks for the children s programs for the end of the school year. Keep Up To Date On Library s Happenings To keep up to date on all the activities at the library, be sure and check out
3 Taylor Sworn In On May 9, newly elected council member Rosemary Hutton Taylor was sworn in by Mayor Mary Burton. Taylor won the special election on April 26. She will fill the remaining three years of the term that was vacated by the passing of Jerry Karbeling. Noor Graduates from Law Enforcement Academy Polk City Police Officer Steve Noor graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy on April 1 of this year. Officer Noor graduated 5 th in his class. At the academy Noor felt he made lots of good friends and contacts. Noor started with the department at the end of August A Tree in Memory of Karbeling A tree was planted on the square on May 14 in memory of Jerry Karbeling. 4 Betty Johnston Deputy Clerk The new deputy clerk is Betty Johnston, of rural Polk City. Betty began her duties at city hall including answering phones, issuing pet licenses, building permits, and water billing on May 24. After retiring from the federal government, she found property just outside of Polk City and fell in love with it. I just love Polk City, that s why I retired here, said Betty. She applied for the deputy clerks job because she missed worked; it was part-time, and close to home. Her family consists of two grown children and two grandchildren. Betty enjoys gardening, animals and reading. Page 4
5 Bike Patrol Four members of the Polk City Police Department took a bicycle-training course. The bikes all carry a first aid kit, and one has a defibrillator on board. Bicycles will be used for mobility, at such events as the Allianz Championship golf tournament.
