1 Page 1 of 5 : LaGrange Daily News; :Jul 23, 2006; :Living; : 1C 10 years at the helm Gulley steers family, college with grace By Debby Durrence Staff writer Stuart Gulley, president of LaGrange College, opened the door of his home with a warm smile and greeting for his guests. Good morning, he said as he offered a handshake. Welcome. Suddenly a large, perfectly coifed white standard poodle bounded into the entry hall. And this is Maggie, Gulley said, chuckling as he petted the dog before ushering his visitors inside. Rounding up his family for a photo, Gulley alternated from gracious host to loving but firm father to his two sons: Andrew, 10, and Matthew, 7. The bond between Gulley and his wife, Kathleen, was obvious as they quietly persuaded their sons to sit still and behave for a photographer. Those 15 minutes in the life of the Gulleys are a microcosm that illustrate the characteristics that have marked Stuart Gulley s first 10 years as LaGrange College president patience, focus, warmth, a sense of humor, love for his family and a commitment to a vision, whether it is a photo shoot or the mission of a college. It s been 10 years since Gulley was named the 24th president of LaGrange College. During those 10 years, he s instituted programs at the school that help students learn how to be citizens of the world. He helped develop the semester system that created the state s only January interim term, giving students the opportunity to explore specialized topics, including study-abroad programs. He implemented an honor code and a servantleadership program, and consistently led the college to be named one of 10 best values and listed as a top school by U.S. News & World Report in its annual rankings of American colleges and universities. And he has led increases in enrollments and endowments. Not bad for a president some felt was too young for the job. Finding his way to LaGrange At the tender age of 34, Gulley was advancing through the ranks of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in He started as director of recruitment and student placement, then became Candler s director of development before being named associate vice president for university development and church relations. I grew up in a family that was fully committed to a local church and to academics, Gulley said. My father taught at Vanderbilt s divinity school for 30 years. He was in the academic side, while I ended up in administration. Gulley grew up in Nashville, Tenn., attended Vanderbilt University, then Emory s School of Theology, where he received a master s degree in divinity. My initial thought was that I would be ordained and serve as a pastor of a local church, he said. But the closer I got to graduating, the more I wasn t sure that s what I felt called to do. One month before graduation, Gulley still didn t know what he was going to do. And then he got a phone call. The dean of the school asked me to consider becoming the director of recruitment and student placement, he said. It was a great opportunity for me to continue to be involved in the academic community I had come to love. Gulley said the experience was a wonderful introduction to the world of private liberal arts colleges. I had the opportunity to travel all over the country, looking at other schools and demonstrating what a quality private liberal arts education could be, he said. I knew I had found what I was supposed to do, so I went back to my dean and asked to be ordained. Meanwhile, Charles Hudson in LaGrange found himself in familiar territory. Sixteen years earlier, he had been on the search committee that brought Walter Murphy to LaGrange College in Now, with Murphy s retirement, Hudson was at it again.

2 Page 2 of 5 People kept calling me and asking if I knew about Stuart Gulley, Hudson said. I d say I didn t know him. One member of the committee said he had talked to him but Stuart wasn t interested. Then Hudson got a call from Lloyd Knox, a bishop (now retired) for the North Georgia conference of the United Methodist Church. He asked if I had thought about Stuart, Hudson said. I told him I didn t know him and he said, Well, you should. Hudson told Knox he had heard that Gulley wasn t interested in the job but that he d like to meet him, if the bishop would handle the introductions. Hudson still wasn t sure Gulley would be interested, but I knew any Methodist would do what the bishop told him to do. Knox, Hudson and Malone Dodson, a Methodist minister and LaGrange College trustee, met with Gulley at the Commerce Club in Atlanta. There, Hudson persuaded Gulley to make an informal, unannounced visit to the school the following Saturday. Knox said Gulley was reluctant to go to LaGrange because of his youth. He wanted to make sure he would be acceptable and accepted by the faculty and staff, Knox said. He met with them and some students, and he felt comfortable. But there was still some concerns that Gulley didn t have enough administrative experience and was too young for the job. And Gulley shared those concerns. At first, I wasn t interested in the job because I thought I was too young, he said. But after that visit with Dr. Hudson and meeting the outstanding faculty, staff and students, I started to think this was where I was supposed to be. A new home The decision to leave Emory was not an easy one for Gulley, his family and his co-workers. Stuart was working on his doctorate degree at the time and we had talked about him becoming a college president, but we envisioned that happening much later in our lives, Kathleen Gulley said. Initially I wasn t up for the move we were having our first child within the next week (of his getting the job offer), and I was thinking we were in Atlanta for the duration. However, with every door we approached in our decision process, the door opened and it felt like the move was right for us. Change is hard for me but this was filled with energy and excitement. Lydia Wheitsel served as Gulley s secretary at Emory University for six years, then came with him to LaGrange, where she worked another nine years before retiring. When he told me he was taking the job in LaGrange, it was very hard on both of us because we had a very good working relationship at Emory, she said. So when he asked me if I wanted to go with him, I told him, Now Stuart, you know better than to invite me if you don t want me. Coming to LaGrange is the best move I ever made. Balancing a young family, a marriage and a demanding job is not easy, even for a seasoned administrator. The credit goes to the school s trustees and faculty because they have understood my need to make my family my first priority, Gulley said. I try to block out time on my calendar so I can go have lunch at school with my sons at least once a month. He keeps his calendar marked with school and family events, so he won t miss anything important. Andrew was only four months old when we started here, he said. That is how we mark our time here in LaGrange, by how old Matthew is. My wife and I joke that we don t know any differently. We ve always been parents as long as I ve been college president. Although his children have to share Gulley with more than one thousand big brothers and sisters at the college, they have also had experiences most children haven t. Our children have had some wonderful opportunities because of my position, he said. (They have had) a chance to travel, meet interesting people like the former president of the United States (Jimmy Carter) who stayed in our home. Maybe there are some trade-offs to be made, but there have been many benefits. But the biggest part of his success? Gulley is quick to credit his life partner. I have been blessed to have a wife who is very supportive of what I do but who clearly has the primary responsibility of caring for our children, he said. I certainly could not do this by

3 Page 3 of 5 myself. Dreams for the college Gulley said there is one topic that is sure to come up in almost every conversation these days. Everybody asks me about LaGrange College football, he said, with a laugh. The community response is greater than I anticipated. I thought initially that if we had 500 people (at the first game on Sept. 9), I d be happy. But now I m not worried about that. The addition of football came after a lot of research, study and conversations with college presidents and consultants, he said. I became convinced that it was the right strategic move for the college, a natural evolution of the athletics here at LaGrange College, he said. There are several benefits (of a football program) to the school an increase in enrollment and a gender balance to the college more aligned to the national numbers of 55 percent female and 45 percent male. Football will add another dimension life to the social life, not only of students but also the community, he said. Future plans include additional student housing, a new library and a new science building. We are always examining our academic programs to make sure they are relevant to today s world, he said. We want to be stretching our students and helping them grow. Gulley said the college also is committed to the community. I am so grateful for the college and community partnership, he said. We want to be good citizens. One area the school would like to concentrate on is the unacceptable high school drop out rate in Troup County, he said. Our goal is to help everyone realize that in today s culture, a high school education at minimum is necessary. We are looking at working with about maybe adopting children in the Hillside and the southeast area to make sure they all graduate. A perfect fit It s been 10 years since a young Stuart Gulley was named president of LaGrange College. Those years have been filled with growth for Gulley, his family, the community and the college community he serves. Those who know him best say it has been a perfect fit. I think Stuart has been good for LaGrange College and I think LaGrange College has been good for Stuart and his family, Charles Hudson said. I ve said it several times in the past, but Walter Murphy was perfect for the college when he was here, and Stuart Gulley has been perfect for LaGrange College now. They are both assets for the school. Gulley s longtime secretary, now retired, said she saw things in her boss that have served him well. I saw in Stuart strong leadership and qualities of character, Wheitsel said. He just doesn t mess up. He is so consistent about things. He thinks through things so carefully. And most of the time, disturbingly, he s right. Hudson, who has served on the school s board of trustees for years and now is on the president s advisory council, is pleased with the man he persuaded to visit LaGrange 10 years ago. Getting Stuart Gulley here has been one of the finest things I ve ever been involved in at LaGrange College, he said.
