2 County Council We will be doing the 4-H National Science Day Experiment at our next county council meeting on Monday, January 14 at 6pm. The Eco-Bot Challenge is an engineering design experiment that simulates an environmental spill that must be cleaned using robots. We are very excited about this hands- on activity and look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Sew Kool will be responsible for refreshments and pledges. If your club would like to provide refreshments or recite the pledges at any of the county council meetings please let us know! 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference The N.C. 4-H Leaders Conference will be held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Research Triangle Park on February 1-3. If you are interested in attending please contact the office, the 4-H office will cover the registration cost. If you would like to provide an activity, craft or game booth for Friday night or an exhibit booth for Saturday night contact the office. Plant Sale We just wrapped up our Greenery Sale, but the Spring Plant Sale is right around the corner. We will begin accepting orders in from January 14- February 21. Plants will be delivered on March 6 th and picked up on March 7 th. Achievement Night Join us in celebrating a great year of 4-H accomplishments. Achievement Night is scheduled for Monday, February 11 at 6pm and we look forward to seeing everyone. We will have a chili supper provided by the 4- H office but ask that Volunteer Leaders, 4-H ers, and their families bring drinks, tortilla chips, cheese, salsa, sour cream and other toppings. Look for an in January to RSVP and signup for sides, toppings, and drinks. If you would like to be part of the achievement night committee, we will meet following the January County Council meeting to discuss the theme and decorating. We will have special recognition for our Graduating 4-H ers, so please let us know if you or your graduating 4-H er will be attending. Also, don t forget nominations for Outstanding Junior Boy/ Girl, Outstanding Senior Boy/ Girl, and the 4-H Spirit Awards. Applications will be ed out in early January and can be picked up at the January County Council meeting. Achievement and award applications are both due in the office no later than Friday, January 25 th. Presentation Workshops Teen Winter Enrichment 4-Her s ages are invited to attend the South Central District Winter Enrichment on Saturday, February Her s will participate in a variety of workshops followed by a trip to NASCAR speed park in Concord. Cost and other details will be announced at a later date. We will hold two presentation workshops on Tuesday, February 26 and Thursday, February 28 from 4-6pm. If you are an experienced presenter and would like to volunteer to assist with these, please let Ashley know. There will also be a link to register for the workshops posted in February. This is also a great time to prepare for next years record books! So if you are going to do one for next year please join us!!!!

3 Officer Installation The Installation Ceremony for the H officers was held at the November 12 County Council meeting. South Central District Vice President Leah Joyner performed the ceremony inducting our new County Council Officers and several club officers. Each officer was presented with a candy bar that represented their duties along 4-H members and Volunteers being presented by candies that represent what they also bring to 4-H. Those in attendance enjoyed clover green punch, cupcakes, and other light refreshments following the meeting. Good Luck to all of our officers in the upcoming year. We sold 240 wreaths, 37 trees, 37 rolls of garland, and over 50 bows! Thanks to everyone that sold greenery, made bows, and helped with the sale pick- up. 4-H ers earned a total of $1,300 in amount in scholarship money! H Summer Camp Next summer we will be camping at Camp Millstone the last week in July (7/28-8/2). We will be offering a $75 discount for 4-H ers who sign up and pay their $50 deposit prior to December 31, In addition to the discount, Stanly County 4-H will cover all transportation cost to and from Camp Millstone. We will also offer a monthly payment plan of $60 a month (Jan 31, Feb 28, March 31, and April 30) with the final installment of $55 due on May 31. The $75 discount will also apply to any specialty camps, however transportation will not be provided. Check out the links below to learn more about 4-H specialty camps!

4 Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit Banquet Stanly County 4-H had seven 4-H ers showing lambs and eight 4-H ers showing heifers in the Farm Credit Showmanship circuit this year. Each participant was required to participate in a minimum number of shows reaching from Stanly County all the way to Robeson County over the course of eight weeks. Most of Stanly County s participants also showed at the State Fair, although it is not part of the circuit and doesn t count toward showmanship points. The Circuit Shows began on August 11 th with the Chatham County Show which was followed by the first Stanly County Youth Classic show which was held at the Agri-Civic Center in conjunction with Agri-Civic Days. The Banquet was held at the James Garner Center in Troy on Friday, November 2. Each county s participants were recognized followed by awards for showmanship. 6 National 4-H Competition Photo Submitted by Terry Sells Michael Alexander, Coach, Cole Mullis, Dalton Sells, Eric Huneycutt, Savanna Everhart ( Durham County 4-H), Luke Lahay Team Alternate (Nash County 4-H) Stanly County 4-H ers place 2 nd in National 4-H Competition Stanly County 4-H club, Victory Valley 4-H, was well represented at the National 4-H Livestock Skillathon Competition in Louisville, Kentucky this November. Victory Valley 4-H Team members Cole Mullis, Dalton Sells and Eric Huneycutt competed along with Savannah Everhart of Durham County 4-H as the North Carolina Livestock Skillathon Team at the national competition. The North Carolina Team was coached by West Stanly High School Agriculture Teacher and Victory Valley 4-H Group Leader, Michael Alexander. The 4-H ers competed against other state 4-H teams from across the nation at the National 4-H Livestock Skillathon Competition and placed 2 nd Overall as Reserve National Champions. The competition includes a range of contests and skills that test the competitor s knowledge of the entire livestock industry. Some aspects of the contest include but are not limited to meat judging, breed identification, equipment identification, quality assurance controls, economics and a written exam based on knowledge of cattle, sheep, goats and swine. Along with placing 2 nd Overall, the team members also placed well within the individual sections of the competition. Savannah Everhart placed 3 rd High Individual Overall, Cole Mullis placed 8 th High Individual Overall, and Dalton Sells and Eric Huneycutt tied for 11 th High Individual Overall. 7 State Council Conference 2012 was a great success! We had an awesome time! There were workshops such as: Leadership, AIRE, Ambassador training; Gold and Silver, Bullying, money management, who you really are, and a lot more! We had district chants and skits, which were a lot of fun. There was a dance at the end of Saturday where we got to groove and move to some good music. Now we can t wait for next year!
