Please RSVP by May 8 by calling the office or by ing lisa_forrest@ncsu.edu. We had great attendance at the last County Council meeting so lets keep it up! ARIE also known as Application, Resume, Interview and Essay is a 4-step process by which youth are chosen to attend National events such as National Congress, National Conference, and International Leadership Conference. All applications must be turned into the office by May 5. Applications and more information can be found at Any youth ages may participate (11-13 non-competitive format; competitive format). Age is determined by age as of January 1,2014.

2 P A G E 2 Youth Summit We are excited to be partnering again with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) for the 5th year to host a Youth Summit! YouthVoice will be held August in Buncombe County. Activities will take place at the Doubletree Hotel, Marriott Renaissance Hotel and Downtown Asheville. One youth (ages 14-18) per county is invited to attend this event. The first 4-H er that commits to completing the assignment and has never attended will be selected to go. However, if no one that hasn't participated before is interested we will then open it to those who have previously attended. Please let us know by May 1 if you are going to attend. Everything needs to be completed and turned in to the 4-H office by June 24. There are several things that youth who agree to come must do before attending the conference. Prior to submitting your registration, you will need to complete three assignments: 1) interview a county commissioner, or meet with the county manager and tour t the county administrative building; 2) attend a Board of County Commissioners meeting (or make plans to attend a meeting); and 3) submit a report (written or video/ multimedia) or scrapbook of your county commissioner interview/ county experience. Your county s Clerk to the Board of Commissioners is a great resource to set up an interview with a county commissioner, a meeting with the county manager and a visit to the county administrative building. The clerk can let county officials know that you plan to attend a Board of Commissioners meeting prior to the NCACC Annual Conference. Sample interview questions and general instructions for reports are included on the next page. You are encouraged to request to be recognized at your Board of Commissioners meeting so that your county commissioners can more easily recognize you when they see you at the Youth Summit. The NCACC covers the cost for this event. If you withdraw from the event after the July 3 deadline (without finding a substitute of the same age and gender and notifying the NCACC), or you do not attend the event or are asked to leave for misconduct, you will be required to reimburse the NCACC the cost of accommodations, meals and transportation expenses ($130). During the conference, youth participants will have the chance to select real problems happening in counties across the state to help provide a solution for. Local county employees and County Commissioners will mentor the delegates and Saturday afternoon, youth will have a chance to put their knowledge to work through an interactive session with Commissioners. 5 A.S.P.I.R.E The A.S.P.I.R.E program is designed to bridge deficits in rural high school students performance on the ACT College Entrance Examination in order to increase the number of students pursuing higher education. This is a cooperative initiative through the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University and North Carolina Cooperative Extension. We are happy to announce A.S.P.I.R.E will be offered here in Stanly County at the Agri-Civic Center! As a high school student, preparing for a college entrance examination like the ACT can be pretty difficult! Fortunately, your local Cooperative Extension Agent and Public High School Teachers are now offering a course to prepare you for the ACT College Entrance Examination through the A.S.P.I.R.E. (ACT Supplemental Preparation In Rural Education) Program. By participating in an A.S.P.I.R.E. ACT Class, you will learn the latest tactics and strategies to improve your ACT score and increase your chances of getting into college! The program includes The Princeton Review ACT study manual, 4 ACT full-length practice exams with score analysis and breakdown, The Princeton Review selective college admissions booklet, and 30 hours of class time instruction, where students will learn the skills they need to be able to tackle the ACT! The initial cost of the ASPIRE program is $165. However $100 is refundable based upon your attendance and taking all four of the ACT practice exams within the ASPIRE program. The other $65 will help cover the cost of your ACT Test Preparation materials and instruction. If you were to privately seek this same type of ACT Test preparation, yuou would pay approximately $1,000. The ASPIRE application can either be submitted online or through the mail. For the online application go to this website However if you wish to turn in a hard copy you can mail it to the following address: A.S.P.I.R.E NCSU Scott Hall 2711 Founders Dr. Campus Box 7608 Below is the schedule for Stanly County Raleigh, NC July 10 7:00 pm August 14 3:30-5:30 pm For more information contact Ashley Smith July17 3:30-5:30 pm July 19 8:30 am-12:30 pm July 22 3:30-5:30 pm July 24 3:30-5:30 pm July 29 3:30-5:30 pm July 31 3:30-5:30 pm August 5 3:30-5:30 pm August 7 3:30-5:30 pm August 9 8:30 am-12:30 pm August 19 3:30-5:30 pm August 21 3:30-5:30 pm August 23 8:30 am-12:30 pm August 26 3:30-5:30 pm August 28 3:30-5:30 pm September 2 3:30-5:30 pm September 4 3:30-5:30 pm September 6 8:30 am 12:30 pm September 9 3:30-5:30 pm

6 4-H ers Attend Teen Retreat Early this April, five Stanly County 4-H youth and Mrs. Courtney Swain attended the 2014 South Central District Teen Retreat. They were in for a weekend full of fun, growth, and fellowship! Friday night the Stanly County delegates attended an opening business meeting where they heard news from the State Officers about a yearbook style scrapbook that will be sold at NC 4-H Congress, watched the speeches and skits from the District Officer candidates, and sang a chant for the Spirit Stick Competition! The night ended with a dance and campfire, then the 4-Hers were up early the next morning for a day of workshops and fun activities. Ranging from learning about college and career prep to rock climbing, the 4-H youth participated in a variety of influential workshops. Throughout the day, district officer candidates were campaigning that led up to the election in the afternoon. All the Stanly County delegates enjoyed reuniting with old district friends and making new friends during the weekend. Teen Retreat winded to a close with the closing business meeting where the Spirit Stick winner was announced. For the first time in over a decade, Stanly County won the Spirit Stick!!! Congratulations Stanly County 4-H! The Stanly County 4-Hers who attended the event would like to thank Courtney for taking them to the retreat and making this Teen Retreat a very fun and happy event! Submitted by Leah Joyner FCS Agent Courtney Swain, Leah Joyner, Alli Ames, Jenna Joyner, Kate Van Horn & Brittany Sanders with the Spirit Stick

9 P A G E 9 Welcome Boots N Buckles 4-H Club "The Boots N' Buckles 4H club is a new horse club in Richfield. We had our first meeting Friday, April 11th at Twisted L Performance Horses which is a boarding, training, and breeding facility, focusing on performance bred Quarter Horses. Fifteen horse loving kids have already joined bringing tons of enthusiasm for the future of 4h and learning more about horses. The group plans to have many hands on learning experiences with horse professionals in the area as well as participating in many community service projects. Being that the meeting place is at a working horse farm, the opportunity for horse interaction is endless. Jessie Godwin and Dustin Lunsford (owners and managers of Twisted L) look forward to offering their facility and knowledge to help these youth grow and become better with horses and life skills."
