AMA Club Number Minutes of the MARKS Monthly Membership Meeting held on September 25, 2016 at the Club Field, attended by 15 members and one guest. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM by Ray Carlson, Vice President. Ray took a moment to thank the MARKS grass cutting crew. Jim Waybright, Dale Martin, James Chandler, John Carroll, Fred White and John Burnett. Dana Morgan with Treasurer's report. motion passed to approve as read. Jason Taylor with previous meeting minutes, Note Funfly changed to Fly in. Minutes approved as read. OLD BUSINESS Elmer McKay with Fly-in update. Awards were not present but will be at the time of the event. NEW BUSINESS Fred White with discussion on Club officers and term of office. MARKS Bylaws were reviewed for information. Jim Waybright with MARKS Field status. 1. The Gravely Mower was loosing power when blades were engaged. After several items checked it was found the fuel filter needed replacing. Replaced filter and problem solved. 2. The old No Trespassing signs were faded. Jim replaced them with shiny new ones. (continued on page 2) President s Thoughts Hello MARKS members! I'm sorry that I wasn't able to be with you at the meeting on Sunday, September 25. I appreciate Ray Carlson filling in for me. From what I hear, you all had a good meeting and there are 2 candidates for Secretary for the next 2 years. I hope to be with you for the next meeting on October 30th. The 54'' Craftsman is pumping oil into the cylinder. Engine needs to be rebuilt over the winter. Discussion on Volunteers to do engine work. John Burnett volunteered. 4. Jim can still order MARKS hats at each. Please contact Jim for more information. 5. The Flag light no longer works. Jim has found a new solar light for plus 7.50 shipping. After discussion a motion was made and passed to purchase. Membership discussion on the need to purchase a new mower and saving funds for purchase. Elmer McKay with discussion on moving funds from general to mower fund. Several motions were made with discussion after each. Jason advised AMA offers a club grant for such purchases. After several ideas were discussed a final motion was made by Dana Morgan to place of general funds and from the munchie fund to start savings. Funds will remain in general fund and be designated as Mower fund on report. Motion passed with 7 for funds and 1 against. Elmer McKay with discussion on meeting day and location on off months. Elmer advised the club could hold meetings at the church in Delmar where the model railroad holds the meetings. A small donation is expected. Jason with discussion on having meetings at a local restaurant. Several options were discussed. Options will be explored and more discussion will be held at the October meeting. John Haffner needed a bandage and on site first aid kit did not provide needed items. After discussion Jason agreed to put together a new kit club officer nominations. positions open are Treasurer, Secretary, and 3 board members. Floor open for Treasurer nominations. With no other business a motion was made and passed to adjourn meeting. Jason Taylor, Secretary September 25, 2016 All Season Flyers 2016 According to the AMA, to earn an All Season Flyer patch, a member must have personally caused a model aircraft to become airborne outside on at least one occasion during each month of the calendar year. 4 Page 4 Behind the Scenes ~ We are fortunate to have a beautiful and highly functional flying field a long, manicured grass runway, water, electricity at flight tables, a porta potty, refrigerated drinks, extensive tools, and an air compressor. Who keeps all of this running and available? There s a group of dedicated and talented volunteers who spend numerous hours to keep 5 mowers, an irrigation system, and miscellaneous electrical and mechanical systems working. Many hours are spent even before the flying season begins to purchase and apply fertilizer to 6 acres, rolling the runway, initializing the irrigation system after winterizing in the prior Fall, installing new or replacement blades on the mowers, and inspecting and replacing any parts needed by the mowers. Considerable time is spent just searching for and procuring replacement parts at reasonable prices for the 5 mowers, 2 of which are commercial grade, and because of the age of the mowers, parts are becoming more difficult to locate. During the flying months, the volunteer mechanics spend a lot of hours replacing blades, diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues with the engines, and then repairing them. Without the knowledge and dedication of these skilled members (whose identity is known to only a few), we would not have the capacity to routinely cut the grass and enjoy such a beautiful field. If you would like to offer your mechanical or electrical talents and share in this important activity, please contact Jim Waybright or Caje Chandler. Weekly Field Maintenance ~ Beginning in late March each year, approximately 6 acres (including the runway and adjacent areas) is cut weekly by a crew of 5 volunteers. Additionally, the grass cuttings are swept from the runway leaving the runway clean. The work is generally scheduled for Thursday afternoons but frequently has to be rescheduled due to weather and wet field conditions. It usually takes about 2 hours to complete the work and while the work is going on, no flying is permitted purely for safety reasons. The cutting crew is currently comprised of 3 permanent volunteers plus 2 alternates who help when they can.
