3 Freedom Elementary Newsletter Page 3 February in the Library What a wonderful month it has been in the library. We started the month with an INCREDIBLE book fair. It was a huge success and we hope you all had the chance to come and find a new book or two to enjoy with your children. The next week we loved focusing on the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio for a week. It is a book that teaches kindness in a wonderful way. We loved talking about and encouraging kindness among all our wonder ful students. Last week the students had a chance to explore non-fiction books at our Dewey Diner. Many of the students discovered incredible new things as they were introduced to our non-fiction section. Thank you so much for supporting your students as they work to become lifelong readers and develop of love of books! We cannot say THANK YOU enough to our awesome book fair volunteers who work so hard to make the book fair a success. To Amiee Belliston who arranges for all the volunteers To Tiffany Stewart who is over theme décor and her committee, Renae Conner, Shalise Roberts, Amy Jenkins, Kelly King, Tammy Berry who and created a small forest of trees and a perfect camping spot complete with a campfire and a tent with reading and UNO inside. To Char Christenson who helps with book fair special events, like the grandparent event. And to all volunteers who run the registers. Thank you to parents, students and teachers who support the book fair. We were able to give each classroom $50 in additional books for their library! We could never do it without the hours and hours of service that the parents from the Freedom Elementary community willingly donate. We appreciate all you do!
4 Freedom Elementary Newsletter Page 4 Road to Success If you student recorded their reading minutes on RTSUtah.com for 16 days in the month of February, they will get to enjoy a popcorn party in the library during their class library time. Keep recording those minutes because students who record 16 days on RTSUtah.com in the month of March will be able to enjoy a magic show in April. So keep reading and recording! Battle of the Books The battles are finally here! March are 5th and 6th grade battles March are 3rd and 4th grade battles Two teams will meet and will take turns to answer questions about the books they have read. Points are given for knowing the correct book and the author. Encourage your students to read their battle books and memorize the authors last name. Take a minute try out Freedom s online library OVERDRIVE. You can check out books from the online library anytime anywhere on a computer, tablet, smartphone, or ereader. To use OverDrive, go to the secure website. Students can login using their student ID# and last name. If their last name does not log them in, try using their first name. Browse the growing selection of online books that can be read right from the browser or download them straight to a computer, tablet, smartphone, or ereader. At the end of the checkout period, the book is automatically returned. Look for the OverDrive app. It is one of the top-rated ebook apps available for ios, Android, Chromebook, Mac OS, Windows, and Windows Phone..
5 Freedom Elementary Newsletter Page 5 March Teacher of the Month Shannon Moedl Mrs. Moedl is our March Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Moedl has taught in three schools in the Alpine school District. She has taught at Shelley Elementary, Sego Lily, and Freedom. She has taught 4th-6th grade and gifted and talented. She was a Principal in the Granite School District for 7 years. She has made such a great impression on the students, staff, and parents at Freedom Elementary. We ask a couple of Mrs. Moedl s teammates about her. They had an easy time coming up with why Mrs. Moedl should be our Teacher of the Month. I nominate Mrs. Moedl for teacher of the month. Mrs. Moedl is one of the first people in the school to give another teacher recognition and praise. She has made big contributions to school wide team building and morale boosting. Mrs. Moedl has high expectations for her students and they strive to meet those expectations. She is frank with parents about concerns; yet they know that she appreciates and recognizes the good in their child. Mrs. Moedl is thoughtful, helpful, and has it all together. She is the definition of going beyond to get things done. When she does something, you know that it will not only get done, but that it will be done to the utmost and in an amazing fashion. She is a great team member and is always willing to help. She will stick up for members of her team and fight for the things she believes in. Freedom is a better school because of her hard work and dedication to the children of this school, her profession, and her colleagues. Students LOVE Mrs. Moedl. She is always sweet and kind, but very straightforward with them. Shannon has a reputation as the teacher who pushes kids above and beyond what they think they can accomplish. Shannon is a one of a kind educator. She is passionate about what she does and it shows in the quality of her work. Congratulations Mrs. Moedl for being Freedom Elementary Teacher of the Month. Your knowledge, dedication, kindness and legacy will be missed when you retire!
