His parents, Selma Hagen and Royal Cooke both graduated from OSD back in 1919 and 1920! Richard has a huge heart for our school and he wanted so badly to come back and tour. Thanks to Matt Boyd, he received a wonderful tour of our museum and HS hallway to reminisce and enjoy OSD. He presented me with a book about his parents and there are some really cool photos that everyone should peruse. HS Students Taking CPR Training... 3 Athletics... 3 Sports Update... 3 Community... 4 Fred Meyer Community Rewards... 4 Announcements Director s Message I had the pleasure of meeting a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) and wanted to tell you about it. Mr. Richard Cooke, now from Florida, was a preacher in the late 50s and early 60s in Portland, and because he knew ASL so well, OSD and WSD alternated weeks of chapel on Director Sharla Jones and Mr. Richard Cooke I feel like this is what we are about providing knowledge and a legacy for generations of Deaf Page 1

2 December 1, 2017 Newsletter Volume 6, Edition 01 people. Meeting Mr. Cooke was a such an honor for me. He was proud to say his father was a furniture repairman and he learned his trade here at OSD. Royal Cook was able to provide well for his family, working for a large department store in Portland. Richard was passing through and was grateful for our time we spent with him, but really it s the other way around. I m so grateful to meet people who love OSD, its history and heritage, and for them to see such value when they walk through our doors. I ll be placing his book in the library as part of our collection. Warmly, Sharla Jones, PhD Director Bond Proceeds to Start Improvements at Oregon School for the Deaf $4.3 million will pay for new roofs and ADA compliance. The (OSD) in Salem will receive some much-needed repairs thanks to bonds approved as part of the state budget. The bonds will provide $4.3 million for capital improvements to the campus, including four roof projects, sidewalks and restrooms that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). move forward with these repairs, and will continue to explore ongoing opportunities for facility and program improvements. OSD has an estimated $17 million in deferred maintenance that will need to be addressed, so these bonds represent about a quarter of the needed repairs. It will mean a lot to our students to have these repairs made, OSD Director Sharla Jones said. As a residential campus with dorms, this is home for our students during the week so it s important that they are safe and that facilities are accessible. This marks the first time ODE has used bonds for capital improvements. Previous repairs were funded through land sales and other sources of funding. Academics Citizens of the Month - November Once a month, OSD Staff submit their votes for the Citizens of the Month recognition. HS CPR Training Riley Gwinn In 2015, Oregon Legislature passed Senate Bill 79 and this adds a requirement to the HS Graduation Requirements. Our HS students are now required to take CPR Training. Here are our students hard at training. Athletics Sports Update By Athletics Dept. Middle school girls basketball wraps up their season with three back-to-back games - next Monday, Tuesday, and the season finale Wednesday. The game on Tuesday is our last home game. High school boys basketball begins next week, with a game at WSD on Tuesday, followed by the league opener against Livingstone on Wednesday, and against Jewell on Thursday. High school girls basketball had their season opener yesterday, losing a close one to nonleague Delphian, They're now getting ready for the same three game streak as the boys are. Middle school boys basketball begins practicing Monday,December 11th. The season opener is January 11th, at home against Delphian. See the attached for results thus far this winter season. 8 DECEMBER 2017 Here s to a HEALTHY New Year! We want to share our resolution with you... along with a happy holiday, we also want to have a healthier new year. All across the country, people are coming together to rethink what school meals should be. Today, we re serving more delicious and nutritious meals with at least 51% whole grains, featuring lean meats, reduced-fat dairy, and more fruits and vegetables than ever before! We hope you ll agree that is something to really celebrate! A Fact Check on Fats We hear all the time that fats are bad but that s not necessarily true! Studies show that incorporating a mix of good fats into your diet actually helps maintain a healthier body weight and boosts brainpower! Healthy fats you can incorporate in your home cooking include oils like olive and coconut, avocado, and Omega-3s from fish and flax. And we keep bad fats in check in school meals serving less than 10% in saturated fats and never trans fats. Healthy Starts with Happy! Holiday meals are often a time we splurge, but a couple small changes could keep everyone happier and healthier this season: Before you start cooking, put some pep in your step with a family walk or run. Start with a healthy appetizer like fresh fruits and vegetables. Enlist some helping hands... get the kids involved! This could be prepping vegetables or making desserts.
