January 2016 Volume 11 Issue 5 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT We Cannot Walk Alone, but Together We Can Fly The book, Night Flight, deals with the early years of aviation. It describes the adventures of aviators who used to fly at night, without radar or radio. The book is not only a gripping story about the early years of aviation but also an instructive parable about the human situation before Jesus coming. Happy New Year! Life was a mystery. We did not know where we came from or where we were going. We were like the night fliers lost in fog and darkness. Then Jesus came into the world. Jesus did not take away the fog and the darkness. He did something more incredible. He got into the plane with us. We are no longer flying blind through the night and the fog. We have a co-pilot sitting before us. 7 & 8th Gr. As we begin a new year, it is important that we resolve to pray often and follow Jesus, the Light of the World, who is always beside us. With Jesus s guidance we will make good choices that will lead us away from darkness and into light. The New Year brings the realization that the academic year is just about half over and mid-term exams are just around the corner. Your ND student need only be here when they have an exam and the exam schedule can be found on our website at The buses will run on their regular schedule, so anyone who has just a morning exam will need to make their own arrangements if they want to leave before 3:00. Should we have a two hour delay during the exam period, we will modify the schedule, but exams will be given that day. Should we have a snow day (heaven forbid), that day s exams will be re-scheduled for another day that will be announced. Please note that in the event that either of these happen, the Regents exams will not be rescheduled. It is our hope that all things will run smoothly for exams! Homeroom: There will be no homeroom on test days. Students will report directly to the room where they will take their exam. 2. Uniforms: Uniforms are required throughout the exam period. Lunches: Students can purchase or bring lunch each day during exams, the same as they do during regular schools days. Menus are posted on a day-to-day basis in the cafeteria. Students are not allowed to leave campus for lunch if they are scheduled for an afternoon exam. Please note: There will be no lunch sold the following days: January 22, 25, 28 and 29. Attendance: Students do not have to come to school if they are not scheduled for an exam. If they are not scheduled for an afternoon exam, they may leave early or come in late if they do not have a morning exam. Please make transportation arrangements accordingly. Check with your local bus service to see whether transportation will be provided each day. Those absent from exams due to illness are required to make them up as soon as possible. Students may remain in the building before or after an exam but must remain in the cafeteria and should quietly study for their next exam.

6 Page 6 January MUSIC HAPPENINGS On December 6, Elyse Bell sang for the Elmira Elks Lodge Memorial Service. Elyse is pictured with the chapter and state presidents, who were very thankful for her time and talents. Congratulations to both our Jr. High and Sr. High Chorus and Band and to our Sr. High Jazz Band on a wonderful Christmas Performance that was enjoyed by many family and friends of Notre Dame. KUDOS TO... Gianina Wicaksono, a senior at Notre Dame, who recently traveled to Pasadena, California to play trombone with the Salvation Army Tournament of Roses Honor Band in the Rose Parade. Gianina was one of two people selected to represent New York State in the marching band. The Salvation Army has the 2nd largest international music program in the world and has a travel band for each state. Gia played with the Ithaca Corps in the 7th & 8th Grade and auditioned and was accepted into the Empire Brass Band (NYS Traveling Salvation Army Band) in the ninth grade. It was through this experience that she learned about the opportunity to March with the Honor Band in the Rose Parade. Gia auditioned and was Gianina Wicaksono, 2016 accepted in October Shortly thereafter she received 5 pieces of music to master plus 5 hymn pieces as well as one additional piece of music which she had to memorize. Upon arriving in California they had one, one hour straight practice and two marching practices before performing in the parade. When asked what she liked best about the experience Gia responded : The fact that I got to connect with youth musicians from all over the world while also spreading the word of God. Art The art department has put to good use the new easels they received as a donation from a generous benefactor of NDHS. Here's How It Works:Students write an essay, poem, or thank-you letter (500 words or less, in English on 8.5" x 11" white paper) sharing how a teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them. Each entry should be submitted with the entry form and a parent or legal guardian must sign the entry form acknowledging that they have read the Official Contest Rules. Winners are selected, and the local store and community celebrations begin! If you would like your teacher to be considered for the local and regional award as well as the national Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year Award, please submit your signed entry form in person or by mail to your local store. Forms must be postmarked by March 1, 2016 and can be sent to any Barnes & Noble store near you.what Students Get: The students who author the winning essays, poems, or thank-you letters will receive a certificate of recognition and be honored at their local store during a ceremony for the winning teachers from their schools. In addition, the Student who authors the winning essay, poem, or thank-you letter for the teacher that wins the Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year will also receive a $500 Barnes & Noble gift certificate and NOOK device. What Teachers Get: The winning teachers will be recognized at a special event at their local Barnes & Noble store and will receive a special award acknowledging their achievement and additional recognition and praise from their community. The five regional winning teachers will each receive a $500 Barnes & Noble Gift Card. The winner of the "Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year" award will receive $5,000 and will be recognized at a special event at a Barnes & Noble store. The winning teacher's school will receive $5,000 as well. Old Faithful Old Faithful NEW BOILER SYSTEM The original 1955 boilers that provide heat to the school must be replaced immediately. We had hoped that we would have another year before replacing them, but we have been told they are now at the end of its useful life. We are actively seeking donations to help cover the cost of the boiler. Shortly you will be receiving a letter requesting a monetary donation in support of covering the cost of the new boiler. All donations no matter the size are appreciated. We hope to have the new boiler installed soon.
