2 PRESIDENT'S LH!ER Happy Kidding! As most of our kidding seasons are finishing up, it has been exciting to see and hear about all the kids hitting the ground here in Michigan. The experiences have been educational for all breeders. The Michigan Boer Goat Association face book page is an excellent tool to follow breeders, brag, post kid pictures, seek animals for sale, sell and advertise your animals, and follow news in our industry and updates on events within the MBGA, Inc. if you have not done so yet, I encourage you to join today and get the latest information. The MBGA, Inc. has updated the website the member page. Memberships are from January 1st. through December 31st, each year. Enclosed is a membership application for your convenience. As soon as your applications are received your listings will appear back on the MBGA, Inc. membership page. I receive reports on the number of hits that the MBGA, Inc. web site receives monthly. It amazes me the number of searches our web site receives, the counter is on the front page for your viewing. Your $30.00 Annual Farm Membership keeps your farms listed on the member page', An exciting opportunity for our Michigan Breeders; the MBGA, Inc. has approved an ABGA sanctioned double Judge Show in September of We will be updating the web site to reflect the information and the MBGA, Inc. will now have a Youth Show Committee and an Open Sanction Show Committee. I would like to thank all of our volunteers. It truly takes a lot of positive and committed people to put these events and activities on for our Industry. We hope to see you all this year at our events. We are always needing volunteers, feel free to contact me if you would like to volunteer on a committee. Keep an eye on the Web site and Facebook page, our member events are always changing. I am always available by , Phone, or Facebook for our members. If you have suggestions or ideas to help better our association, feel free to contact me. Blessing to you all this Spring Kidding Season, e...ran.eir :77/zor

4 2015 YOUTH CHALLENGE SERIES 2015 YOUTii ALT ENGT: Is winter over yet? We get teased with nice weather and then it's right back to cold again! And I know this will last through May because for the first shows it hard to pick the right warm day to wash and clip your animals! 2014 went by like a flash and was our greatest years yet for the Youth Challenge! We had the most participants, the most support, the most growth in our youth, and the most attended youth awards celebration yet! The Youth Challenge show committee is dedicated to see our youth expand their knowledge, responsibility, stewardship and pride for the goat industry. These kids are the future of our goat industry in Michigan. This coming year there have been some changes to our rules to keep us moving forward and building the momentum of the Youth Challenge. Our largest change is that the point will no longer be calculated on the top five shows. For the years past this has created a large amount of work and anxiety for the show committee because the formula for points was very easy to make mistakes in, so the points will be straight forward and easy to calculate. The points at the end of the season will still be audited and review for accuracy but it will be much easier to follow the formula. The rules are posted on the MBGA website The season end awards celebration was a blast to have to kids involved in activities and interacting with each other! This year we are going to be adding a knowledge portion to the challenge so look for that information at the shows so that you can participate in that for awards at the end of the season! As always we have to send a huge thank you to our Sponsors! We could not do this for our Michigan youth without you! We are continually working on making more opportunities for the youth. If you have any input for what you would like to see us do for the youth in the future please contact one of the show committee members MBGA Show committee: Tina Esham, Wendy Walters, Suzanne Pish, Dusty Modert, Tarina Jansen We are looking forward to the best year yet in 2015! Thank you for all your support! See you at the show! 5 MBGA YOUTH MEMBER IN THE NEWS: through unique contest si tares his passion for goats By: Julie Ruemenapp Kyle Stack, a 14-year-old Michigan 4-H member from Newaygo, loves raising and showing goats. When he decided that he wanted to share his love of goats with other 4-H'ers, he found a creative way to do it. While at Leadership Washington Focus this past summer, Kyle met a girl who had begun her goat herd with an essay contest. Wanting to do the same thing for youth in his home community of Newaygo County, Kyle announced this summer that he would donate one of his Boer goats to a deserving 4-H'er in his county through an essay contest. Interested youth will submit essays on why they would like to be part of the goat project, and Kyle will select one contestant from the applicants to receive a goat. As part the contest, the winner of the goat will also receive Kyle's mentorship and assistance throughout the year as the young person learns about raising and showing a Boer goat. "I am hoping the 4-H'er who receives the goat will grow to love them like I do and will learn like I have through the project," Kyle said. Kyle's interest in starting the goat mentorship program is a result of his positive experience with the program. He started raising and showing goats in 4-H nine years ago and feels the program has helped him develop his sense of responsibility, business management skills and selfconfidence. Though Kyle raises his..:-.?.oeiv,toods Boor Goats herd with the help of his family, he assumes many of the responsibilities himself, including managing the business side of the operation. Today, he is a youth representative for the Michigan Boer Goat Association and is working to elevate his herd to the top of the industry. His goats have received numerous state awards, including reserve champion senior doe, reserve champion yearling doe and reserve champion Boer doe at the 2014 Michigan State 4-H Goat Show. Outside of his involvement in the goat project area, Kyle is also involved in the 4-H agriculture and swine projects. He served as a teen leader in his county for a farm safety event and has helped with numerous community service projects hosted by the Animals Unlimited and Rebel Ranchers 4-H clubs, of which he is a member. Kyle is also a member of the Newaygo County 4-H Council and serves as its co-historian. He has also participated in 4-H Exploration Days for the past three years and has been involved in the 4-H State Awards program for the past two. In 2013, Kyle received the Mark of Excellence Award, and in 2014 he was a regional delegate in goat science. "I would have to say my favorite part of 4-H is meeting new people who share the same interests I do while helping the community at the same time," Kyle said. Youth interested in participating in the Michigan 4-H goat program can find more information about the project area on the Michigan 4-H goat page.
