Since close reading is my new favorite thing, I have decided to create differentiated close reading passages based on different subjects that children would deem interesting, or topics that I need to cover anyway. Many systems and states do close reading differently, so I have left the specifics for marking up the passage out. Instead of having the levels on the passages where students can see the numbers, I have decided to put a shape to designate which level it is in the top right-hand corner. 3 Robert Edward Lee was born in Virginia. It was the 19 th of January in Robert had a father named Henry. He fought in the Revolutionary War. Henry was in charge of troops that rode on horseback. Henry was also a good friend of General George Washington. June of 1825 brought Robert to West Point to begin his military career. He was called a cadet when he began at West Point. A cadet had a difficult time at West Point. They would have to awake early for a full day of classes. Robert studied science and math. He would also learn French. Robert learned how to draw maps. This would prepare him for battle plans that he would have to make. He graduated in Slavery was a confusing issue for. He grew up in Virginia. Slaves worked on land that was owned by his family. It has been noted that some historians considered Robert s desire to fight for the North because he didn t agree with slavery. Letters have been uncovered that mentioned that Robert owned slaves and their labor. He though that the only being that should free slaves should be God. The United States that Robert revered was broken apart in The Civil War had started. Robert adamantly desired for the United States to remain as one. He did not want the South to break away from the United States. The South would break away from the Union against the wishes of. One of his jobs was to protect the coastline along South Carolina and Georgia. He also had to protect Florida. He oversaw the construction of forts along the coast of the South.
