All of our club volunteers have attended kickoff events and now is the time to enroll former and new 4-H members. Our fair booth theme is 4-H Grows Here. Plans are underway to sell the Knox County 4-H Center at 401 West High Street. Volunteer help is needed to consolidate supplies, materials, furniture and equipment that is stored at the Center. Some items will be auctioned off, some will be donated and/or recycled and others will be disposed of. If clubs wish to help with the process, please contact Larry Hall at ext Please spread the word about the good things that youth can accomplish in 4-H. 3 Quality Assurance for 2015 I have been working with our Vocational Agriculture teachers here in the county to get our QA dates set for You can see the dates that we have set to the right in the red box. So please mark your calendars accordingly. The following project exhibitors need to attend a Quality Assurance session in order to show at the 2015 Knox County Junior Fair: Market Beef, Market Dairy Steers, Beef Feeders, Beef Breeding, Dairy Market Feeders, Dairy Cattle, Market Hogs, Market Lambs, Sheep Breeding, Market Goats, Dairy Goats, Market Rabbits, Breeding Rabbits, Broilers, Breeding Poultry, Turkeys. Equine exhibitors also need to attend (not currently eligible for test out). This year, all sessions will begin promptly at 6 p.m. If you arrive past 6:15 p.m. you will not be able to join in on that QA session. Per ODA regulations, you must attend a session that is a minimum of 60 minutes in length. We know that everyone is busy but please plan accordingly around your schedules, especially sports. If you pass the test with a 70% or higher, you will not have to attend a QA session for the remainder of your 4-H or FFA showing career. Hartford Fair District Information What is the Hartford Fair District? According to the Hartford Fair Premium Book: Four-H youth members may participate in the Hartford Independent Fair only if both of the following criteria are met: 1. They are registered with either a Licking County Club; a club in the following townships of Delaware County (Harlem, Trenton, Porter and Berkshire) or a club in the following townships of Knox County (Milford, Hillier and Miller). 2. They attend school in or have residence with the Hartford Fair District as outlined above. 4 Club and Member Opportunities H Paper Clover Campaign at TSC April Officer & Advisor Training The 2016 Knox County Officers Training will be held on March 7 at the Mount Vernon High School in the cafeteria. The training will start at 6:30 p.m. All new and veteran officers are urged to attend and receive information on how to accomplish their duties. We will also have an informational session for advisors as well as a session to be trained as a Cloverbud advisor. There is no pre-registration for this event. 4-H Science Saturdays The next one is scheduled for Saturday, March 5. 4-H Science Saturdays are for kids in grades 3-6 who want to discover new things and learn by doing. This session runs from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center in Columbus. The cost is $5 per child. Preregistration is required; please contact our office for more information and/or registration form. Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration We are pleased to announce the creation of the first Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration. Next November, the nation will elect the 45th President of the United States. Where will you be in January 2017 for the presidential inauguration? New in we are excited to extend the program to the Executive Branch of the federal government and let students experience Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C. Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration will take place on January 17-21, Delegations will experience Inauguration Day, a behind the scenes look at the nation s capital, educational programs and experience their own Inauguration Ball. For further information please visit Knox County 2017 Solar Eclipse Space Balloon Project Here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our Knox County youth! On August 21st, 2017, a total solar eclipse will take place across the United States. The eclipse will reach totality (when the moon completely eclipses the sun) at 1:24 PM on August 21st, 2017 in Hopkinsville, KY. The Knox County 2017 Solar Eclipse Space Balloon Project incorporates students, grades 5-12, from Knox County, Ohio to participate in the design, construction, and launch of a space balloon during the solar eclipse. The goal is to capture video and data as the eclipse occurs, viewed 100,000 feet above the Earth s surface. Students will participate on student-led design teams and each team is assigned an engineer advisor to help along the way. Engineer volunteers from Seimens, Boeing, IEEE, and the Department of Defense have agreed to act as advisors. The teams include balloon and payload designs (the platforms will carry six cameras, 2 Raspberry Pi Computers, a Drop-Bot payload to be jettisoned during the flight, flight data collection computers, and much more) and marketing and documentary teams (finance, press releases, film interviews and edit videos for making-of documentary and final eclipse video). Team members will interface with local broadcast personalities and perform presentations to various community groups. Each part of the project will be broken down and assigned teams based on complexity and design requirements. Hardware and programming not your thing? 6 Ohio 4-H Project Central 4-H Project Central is an easy way for a 4-H members or 4-H member-to-be to preview all the Ohio 4-H project books and resources. You can take a closer look at a book, find out what others had to say about a project and even share your own experience with a project. Follow the link above and find the project you want to rate and go for it. Enrollment Deadline March 15 The deadline for enrollment for 4-H clubs and FFA chapters is March 15. This is the deadline for those club and chapter members who wish to participate in 4-H judgings and exhibit at the 2016 Knox County Junior Fair (July 23-30). This is also the deadline for enrollment in county livestock projects that may be eligible to exhibit at the Ohio State Fair. There will be no project changes after this date. Who Can Join 4-H? Members, age 8 AND in 3rd grade to age 18 as of January 1 st of the current year, can enroll in a 4-H club and select 4-H project(s) to explore through that club and county activities. 8 Hunter Education Classes Home Study courses allow youth and adult students to download the Hunter Safety manual from the website, answer the questions at the end of each chapter, schedule a class, bring the written answers to the class, participate in four hours of instruction, including the official ODNR Hunter Safety test, and receive their card after a passing grade on the test (80%). 4-H Shooting Sports Workshop There will be a 4-H Shooting Sports Workshop February th at 4-H Camp Ohio. Last year s event was cancelled due to lack of registration, so let s promote this opportunity for shooting sports training at 4-H Camp Ohio! 9 4-H Camp Ohio News 4-H Camp Ohio has redesigned their website and placed it at a new address To access their news and events page please visit: At that site you ll be able to download and print flyers as well as permission and health forms. In many cases you will register (and pay) directly with 4- H Camp Ohio staff per instructions on the website. Training meetings will be held on the following dates in the meeting room at 1025 Harcourt Road, Mount Vernon - February 16, March 15, April 19, May 17 and 31 & June 2. Additional meetings will be scheduled in Holmes County. Meetings will start at 6:00 p.m. and we will try to end by 7:30 p.m. Training hours can also be achieved by getting First Aid, CPR, Blood borne pathogens and Lifeguard certification. All counselors and staff must attend a Policy 1.50 (Child Protection and mandatory reporting) training session prior to camp. Camp counselor training dates in Holmes County on specified Thursdays from 5:30 7:00 p.m. usually at the Baker Building on the new Holmes County Fairgrounds. 2/18, 3/17, 4/21 & 5/19. 4-H Camp Ohio Winter Workshops The last winter workshops at 4-H Camp Ohio will be held on March 19 and April 9. They will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a cost of $10 per person and includes lunch and you must register before March 5 and March 19 for the two scheduled days. If there are not enough registrants for a given class, that class will not be offered. Visit for more information. Camp Counselor Workshop (CCW) April at 4-H Camp Ohio This workshop is designed for training camp counselors who camp at 4-H Camp Ohio, this interactive workshop enables teen counselors from 14 counties to make new friends and share ideas on camping. As in the past, extended hours for Knolmes County counselors (April 23-24) are available and you will register and pay through your respective OSU Extension offices, once registration materials become available. 10 Knox County Litter Prevention & Recycling for the 2016 Knox County Fair Civic clubs and not-for-profit organizations are needed to collect recycling at the Knox County Fairgrounds during the Knox County Fair July 25 th - July 30 th. Organizations will be paid $50 each day for gathering all the recycling at the Knox County Fair, bag replacement and disposal in a designated container provided by Litter Prevention and Recycling at the Fairgrounds. Besides the $50 a day, organizations will be allowed to keep all the aluminum cans they collect. The estimated time for collection is about 2 hours each day. All recycling collection must be done by 10 am each day. An organization will need to collect all of the cardboard, recycling, and recycling containers on Monday August 1 st. This collection should start before noon and will take at least 3 hrs. to complete. Payment will be $75 and all the aluminum cans and cardboard may be kept by the organization. Stipends will be mailed out to organizations in early August. This collection event is sponsored by the Knox County Commissioners with funding provided by the DKMM Solid Waste Management District. Vernon, Ohio (740) randycanterbury@co.knox.oh.us Faith Lutheran Stone Gardens Faith Lutheran Church is interested in finding groups to help maintain their New Testament Stone Garden and thought that 4-H groups may be interest in this as a community project. Two possible ways are as follows: 1) We have divided the garden in to garden plots, the plots are available to people or groups to plant & care for over the summer months. 2) We are in the process of scheduling work days in the Stone Garden for spring clean-up or weeding, etc. and could use help on those days. If you would like a garden plot, you will be in charge of planting & caring for it, but please note that we have deer that love our garden, so you may want to consider some deer proof plants.
