2 How to Use Your Planner STEP 1: Write homework in your planner every day. STEP 2: Check your planner at the end of the day. STEP 3: Take books and materials home that are needed to complete homework. STEP 4: Look ahead: do you have a test coming up, do you have a project due? Begin early, don t procrastinate. Practice Good Listening 1) Keep your eyes on the speaker. 2) Keep your hands free from distractions. 3) Position your body towards the speaker. 4) Focus on what the speaker is saying. 5) Respect the speaker by not talking and waiting until the speaker is done to ask clarifying questions. Homework Where? Sit at a table or desk in a quiet place with good lighting. When? Plan a time with your family in the afternoon or early evening. Do homework the same time each day. How? Be prepared by checking your planner, gathering your materials and books before leaving school, and asking for help when needed. Why? Students who do their homework are less stressed and do better on classwork and assessments. Classroom Behaviors Before: Bring materials and books, arrive on time, fill in your planner and complete any class entry procedures. During: Follow classroom rules, listen carefully, participate in classwork/labs/activities, ask for help when needed. After: Put away your materials, make sure you understand the homework, clean your desk area, ask any clarifying questions you may have about the day s class. Learning is a treasure which follows its owner everywhere - Chinese Proverb

26 How to Follow Directions When someone gives you a direction, you should: 1. Look at the person 2. Say "okay" or acknowledge the person in another way 3. Follow the request that is being asked of you 4. Follow up later with questions or concerns Four sequential actions that can make a big difference in our school safety and our school culture! Helpful Hints for Using Your Planner 1. Keep your planner at the front of your binder. 2. Every day-at the beginning or end of each class-record homework, upcoming assignments, projects and tests. 3. If there is no homework assigned in a class, write no homework in the space provided. 4. Long-term projects or assignments should be recorded twice: the day they are assigned and the day they are due. 5. When an assignment is finished, place a check mark next to it; do not cross it out. 6. At the beginning of each month, record upcoming academic, school and personal responsibilities in your planner. 7. At the beginning of each month/grading period, record long-term and short-term goals in your planner. 8. Never remove pages from your planner to show completion of activities. Instead, fold down the corner of the page or make a check mark next to the activity. 9. Your parents are an integral part of your academic team-share your planner with them each week.

36 DETERMINATION Set your goals and never quit I promise, you'll succeed 'Cause it's the giver-uppers Who will always be in need If you can be determined In the things that you pursue Then you will be successful All your life, with what you do Obstacles get in the way That you will learn to beat While all the giver-uppers quit And go down in defeat! Hold fast to all your dreams and plans No matter what unfolds And you will be a champion As you realize your goals! BE A SEE-THROUGHER See through see through Whatever you do If you re a look-atter Your hopes will all shatter Those dreams that now matter Will never come true Look at be defeated See through be completed You will have succeeded If you will see through! TWINKLE, TWINKLE Twinkle, twinkle, little star Now I know just what you are All the awe and wonder s gone Years have passed, and I am grown When I see you in the sky I m no longer asking Why? Cause I learned in science class You re composed of fire and gas IF YOU WANT TO KNOW ME If you want to know me listen to me If you want to strengthen me point out my gifts and talents If you want to motivate me, find the incentives that drive me If you want to direct me, persuade me with the benefits If you want to make me feel important Invite me If you want me to live a life of purpose equip me with values If you want to protect me create safe boundaries around me If you want to encourage me be available when I am challenged If you want to energize me ignite me with your enthusiasm If you want to challenge me help me learn mistakes are ok If you want me to have an accurate self give me responsibilities If you want me to value others love me! Discipline Strategies and Solutions 2004 Gene Bedley Poems By Darrell Scott, Rachel s Father BEAUTY AND UGLY Beauty and Ugly went out for a swim They put all their clothes on a low hanging limb Soon Ugly climbed out (he was ready for bed) He reached for his clothes but grabbed Beauty s instead When Beauty got out, she had nothing to wear So she grabbed Ugly s clothes that were still hanging there Now Ugly gets praised, and poor Beauty abused Cause too many times, people get them confused So Ugly looks good till he s fully exposed And Beauty, sometimes, is disguised by her clothes OLD BOOKS They re pages are tattered, they re covers are dusty They ve yellowed with age and they sometimes smell musty They ve served, oh so many, and all through the years They ve challenged us, humored us, brought us to tears Their authors are gone but their words still inspire They prompt us to action and help us acquire The wisdom of prophets, the knowledge of ages By reading their words, we can all become sages! But now they are threatened, and I greatly fear That if we re not careful, they ll all disappear The web has become an incredible crook It s stolen the pleasure of reading a book! Poems By Gene Bedley, National Educator of the Year ANONYMOUS AUTHOR This is the story about four People: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important Job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it! Everybody was sure somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anybody.
