3 From the Editor Because of changes in your organization there was no spring edition of the newsletter. Now that a new board is in place and some stability has occurred we will publish 4 newsletters each year; winter, spring, summer, and fall. The newsletter will be part SMMSIG related news and events and part articles on the steel industry and modeling the steel industry. The news and events portion as well as the article section relies on your participation. If nothing crosses my desk for publication, then the newsletter will consist of news about the SMMSIG contributed by the Board of Directors. It is up to you, the members of SMMSIG, to determine the content of the newsletter. Since I am not an expert on the steel industry or modeling the steel industry, I cannot edit for content. Please submit articles to your board chairman, Bill Wolf. Submission Guidelines Articles should be in Word, Text, or PDF format. Images, figures, and illustrations can be embedded into the text. Make sure the images, figures, and illustration are sharp so they can easily be read on a computer screen. Photos need captions and must acknowledge the photographer. If people are shown in the photo, they need to be identified. Any material taken from another publication must have permission from that publication to be in this newsletter and credit must be given to the publisher as well. We cannot publish copyrighted material without permission and credit. The newsletter is published in March, June, September, and December. Submission deadlines are no later than the first day of month prior to publication date. For example, the June issue has a May 1 submission deadline. Keep these deadlines in mind when announcing meetings or other time dependent notices.
4 The Chairman s Message It is hard to believe that it has been three months since our meet in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It was during the opening session of the meeting that the President of our group, John Glaab announced that he was resigning and appointed yours truly as the new president. Since we had no bylaws and this was an abrupt change in leadership a meeting was convened by the board of directors to decide the groups direction. I was nominated by the board to be your president. I accepted this responsibility with the understanding that this would be for a one year period. I would do my best to organize, create structure and move our organization forward. To that end I render to our members my first report. I felt that it was imperative to have bylaws in place to give structure and process to our endeavor. The board concurred and we immediately took this to task. Various bylaws were reviewed. The Layout Design and Operations SIG post their documents on web sites. We also reviewed a working document that John had been drafting with his attorney. After reviewing these documents we felt that reinventing the wheel would not beneficial. We are working with a keep it simple credo. So we moved forward with the LD s bylaws in hand as a prototype document. After our review we made some appropriate modifications and voted to approve the bylaws. Eric Craig signed the document on November 2, 2014 and the official SMMSIG was born. We are currently operating under an interim board of directors. The permanent board will be elected in 2015 and take office on January 1, It is our intention to conduct elections in the fall of Preferably, after the next meet. By then a nominating committee, yet to be named, will have had time to canvas the membership. If you feel that you would like to serve as a board member or officer please let us know. More on this to follow! We are organized as a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-partisan, non-stock corporation. The organization is organized for one or more of the purposes as specified in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. I am in the process of getting this established. Eric Craig took on the task of applying for articles of incorporation in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He has also accepted the responsibility as the Treasurer for our organization. His first act was to open a checking account with Bank of America. The board s feeling was that this would be preferable to a regional bank for obvious reasons. This will facilitate ease of doing business for future treasurers. Communications with the membership is vital. This bulletin is an example. The NMRA with whom we are associated requires that SIG s publish a quarterly newsletter/bulletin. It s size is not an issue nor should it ever be. Contact and communication with the membership makes for a healthier organization. I am pleased to announce that Steve Benezra, editor of The Dispatcher s Office the OPSIG s official journal has decided to apply his talents with Joe Magarac s Journal. Welcome Steve! The board also felt that, in the spirit of good communications a web site would be essential. It will also serve as a means of education on steel mill modeling for the membership as well as the public. Education on steel mill modeling is the primary reason for our existence. We exist as a Section 501(c)(3) for this purpose. I believe that having a web site will give our group the best medium to connect with present and future members. Currently, I am building the site ( Look for the site to be turned on shortly after January 15, Your instructions on how to join will be on this site under the membership tab. For me this has been challenging but, educational as well. I am donating the initial start-up expenses in an effort to provide us with the pieces necessary to run a first class SIG. Currently I am working out the arrangements to enroll members, collect dues and fees associated with the annual meet, should you chose to attend. The site
5 will have PayPal capability for that purpose. Those who chose to conduct business the traditional way will still be able to write a check. Instructions on these details will be posted to the site. After the site is up and running your articles, information and thoughts will be welcome. It is our vehicle, along with the journal, to share research, modeling and progress on your own mills with fellow modelers. Our organizational goal will always be to keep improving the membership experience. Now let us focus briefly on the annual meet. With all of the changes that have occurred, the board thought it prudent to keep things simple for the first year as we adjust to some growing pains. Since this is the first time that we have worked together as a team so for now, the simpler the better. Popular, but extremely difficult to execute, are the mill tours that we all enjoy so much. We felt that this aspect of the meet would be, for this year, the proverbial A Bridge to Far. Our location will be on the southern edge of the steel mill rust belt and still offers the mill fans an opportunity to browse around for educational and photo opportunities. The meet will be conducted on the Labor Day weekend. It will begin with registration and clinics on Thursday evening. Friday will be dedicated to clinics and socializing. The layout tours and awards dinner will be on Saturday. There will be a business and general membership meeting on Sunday morning. Paul La Pointe will be hosting the event in Wheeling, West Virginia. The hotel and layout tours are being worked on by our host. Eric and I are assisting Paul in this endeavor. The hotel and registration information will be on the web site as soon as it is available. Look for it in January or February at the latest. Clinics are the main fiber of the meet. The web site and future bulletins will contain details on seminar content and standards should you hopefully, desire to share your research and modeling experiences. After all that is why we exist. The board is looking for a clinic coordinator. Please let us know if you could fill this position. As you can see this is just the beginning. There is more to be accomplished in the New Year. We will post on the web site, a want add for volunteers to help build our SIG. If you are interested in being part of the party let me know. The board looks forward your assistance and support. I am excited for all of us. The Magarac Society is growing and providing you, the modeling artist and industrial historian, the medium to share with others, not just our families, your talent as a Steel Mill Modeler. Think of it! Become a Master Model Railroader through the NMRA awards program with a major in steel mill planning and operations. That way when you attend a national NMRA meet you can wear a helmet, safety glasses and metatarsal safety shoes with pride. What a great way to combine or compliment your existing passions for design, operations and industrial operations into a single focal point, allow your model railroad come alive through your steel mills.
