Dr. Carter s challenge is asking us to bring laser-like focus to our work, both at school and in state affiliates, so we can continue raising student achievement to proficient and advanced levels. ASCD at the national level supports the work of schools in a variety of ways through programs, products and services. Thus, our state ASCD affiliate is also asked to support the work of our schools through programs, products and services. I am proud to say our state affiliate has worked hard to increase support to schools in all three areas, and we will continue to do so in the future. It is our affiliate s goal to, not only be successful, but also to have our affiliate viewed as a significant contributor to Arkansas Education. Therefore, keeping with the national initiative, our state level theme for this year is Transformation: From Successful to Significant. As president, I would like to offer some focused goals for the school year. Each of these goals will fall within the existing AASCD strategic plan; however, these goals seem to be timely and perhaps a priority. These are goals that can reasonably be accomplished in the next year. In keeping with our theme of Transformation: From Successful to Significant, I offer the following goals for consideration: Pursue the influence agenda via a visible presence at all 2007 legislative sessions dealing with curriculum and instruction issues and the writing of position papers on pending legislation as appropriate. Celebrate the broad-reaching influence of our diverse active membership by pursuing the Affiliate Excellence Award, so as to gain recognition for the great work of our Board and Membership. Enhance our communication system with the potential of having an influence at the national level through the active use by our members of the Educator Advocate Network. Work to influence the efforts connected to the high school redesign agenda. During our ASCD national leadership training, we were advised we were not attending a meeting, per se. Rather in relationship to our work with the Association, we were attending a Charge Conference. A Charge Conference is a time to commit and recommit to our agreed upon agenda and to begin the work of the Association. At a recent AASCD Board Retreat, we viewed our gathering as a Charge Conference as well. During those two days we focused on the important work of Arkansas ASCD as carried-out through our programs, products and services. With purposeful focus from each of us, we know our affiliate can move from Successful to Significant as we work together on behalf of the students and educators of Arkansas. 4 Page 4 Arkansas ASCD New Directions Welcomes New Board Members! Dr. Matt McClure is the Superintendent of Cross County School District. Peggy Walter is the Principal at Fairview Elementary School in the Fort Smith School District. Debbie Miller is the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in the Batesville School District. Phoebe Bailey is a Teacher Center Coordinator for the Southwest Arkansas Educational CO-OP. Karen Endel is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Leadership and Learning at Arkansas Tech University. AASCD Board Holds Annual Retreat The Board members of your Arkansas ASCD retreated on July to begin the transformation From Successful to Significant. The agenda included an orientation session for new Board members, a long distance greeting and accolades from the national ASCD office, review of the Summer Conference evaluations, and two days of committee work planning for the new year. The article from our new president, Marsha Jones, on page one of this edition of New Directions will give you a taste for the rigor and relevance of our coming year in AASCD! Highlights of the 2006 Annual Conference Evaluations Having meals in the large conference room worked much better than in the past. Thanks for this The reflection time was well received. valuable feedback! The last session with a big name speaker (Doug Reeves) on the last day was well attended. The large screens in the general session room were very helpful. Folks that attended the three ticketed sessions with Paula and Chester appreciated the focus, content,and process. Round table discussions and multiple formats for professional learning provided a variety of ways to learn. The most frequent suggestions for improvement were to consider re-locating to a larger facility and to include more math content.

5 Volume 25, Number 1 Page 5 Twenty-seven members were present for the annual business meeting of Arkansas ASCD. The meeting was called to order by President Randy Willison at 3:15 PM at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs. Minutes from the June 20, 2005 business meeting were read and approved. Dr. Mary Gunter reported the current membership of AASCD is 625 members. She announced Arkansas ASCD had received the ASCD 2006 Influence Award in Chicago, Illinois, at the annual conference. Dr. Gunter was appointed to the ASCD National Legislative Committee. Dr. Arthur Tucker has been appointed as a mentor for the ASCD Young Aspiring Leader Program. Dr. Gunter reported about the July 2005 AASCD Board of Directors retreat. The AASCD executive committee members visited Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. while attending the LEAP Institute in September of She also reported on the AASCD Shareholders Retreat on high school reform that was held in January Regional shareholders meetings, sponsored and facilitated by AASCD, were held in February. Dr. Randy Willison, AASCD President, commented on the work completed by the board during the past year. He expressed his appreciation for the work conducted outside of people s regular work day. He also expressed that he had enjoyed working with the board and membership during his term as president. Annual AASCD Business Meeting Arlington Hotel, Hot Springs June 19, 2006 ARKANSAS APPOINTMENTS FOR ASCD POSITIONS DUES INCREASE PASSES COLLABORATION CREATES IMPACT FOR STUDENTS ASCD INFLUENCE AWARD Under new business, Dr. Frank Holman, Finance Committee chair, stated, In order to maintain and continue services as we [AASCD] grow, an increase in membership fees from $25 to $40 is needed. The increase in AASCD membership dues was discussed, a motion was made and the motion passed. Randy Willison reiterated the importance of the leadership for the organization. He encouraged all members to vote in the AASCD board election on Tuesday. Frank Holman announced there was a list of vendors and sponsors. Vendors would be recognized during conference sessions, but encouraged us all to go by the booths for a visit.. Molly McCloskey, ASCD Regional Director, shared that it was important Arkansas ASCD realize the accomplishments of our organization. She stated the Arkansas ASCD budget was impressive and Arkansas ASCD, as an organization positively impacts education. Ms. McCloskey continued by expressing she was impressed with Arkansas ASCD collaboration to create an impact for students in Arkansas. Arkansas ASCD now has over 1000 members and 455 of you were in attendance at the 2006 Annual Conference!
