1 Phillips-Rooks Extension District #5 Volume , Issue 2 November 2016 Phillips-Rooks Extension District #5 Offices Closed The Phillipsburg and Stockton Offices will be closed on Friday, November 11, 2016 in observance of Veterans Day. We will also be closed Thursday, November 24, 2016 and Friday, November 25, 2016 in observance of Thanksgiving. Kansas 4-H Online Enrollment and Participation Forms The Kansas 4-H Online Enrollment system is open. All 4-H members must complete this online process to enroll in 4-H. The website to enroll in 4-H is Participation Forms are completed during the online enrollment process. Please contact the Phillips-Rooks Extension District Offices with any questions. Stockton Office or Phillipsburg Office Project Leaders Needed As members enroll in projects, it is important to provide them with learning experiences in those areas. Adults and teens are needed to guide the members in their project learning. If you have a skill to share, visit with your club leader to get involved. Beginning of the New 4-H Year Now is the time to set your project goals for the year. Think about what it is that you want to do and learn through your 4-H activities. Write it down! If it's on paper, it's much easier to reach that goal. If you set your goals now, you will have a great guide to follow to get to where you want to go by the year's end. Make the most of your 4-H year by planning ahead. Take a few minutes to record those goals in your 4-H Kansas Award Portfolio (KAP) now, so it will be easier to complete them at the end of the year. Now is also the time for the 4-H club to set some goals for the year. The goals should be statements of what leaders, members, and parents would like to see the club accomplish. Involving everyone in the club is the fastest way of ensuring enthusiasm. Some examples of club goals are: Members present a project talk or demonstration at County Club Day Hold a club project tour Complete a community service project Volunteer Screening Process All volunteers that work directly with youth in the 4-H program are required to complete the Volunteer Screening process. For new volunteers, this includes completing an application form, background check, personal interview and the Volunteer Screening Orientation Training. For current volunteers, complete the annual Volunteer Screening Renewal form. Background checks will be repeated every three years. Remember, returning volunteers who allow their renewal forms to lapse one year, are required to go through the entire Volunteer Screening and Training process again.

2 Saying Thank You is Very Important Two little words that mean so much...thank YOU! We don't take the time to say or write thank you to others who help us along the way often enough. Thank you notes are a polite way of expressing gratitude, but more importantly they are an effective means of building strong relationships and creating goodwill for you and your 4-H organization. Dog Judge Certification Training 4-H Dog Judge Certification Training will be held January 20-22, 2017 in Seneca Kansas. This is also a good opportunity for local project leaders and older 4-H members to observe the training and thus better understand how they will be judged at invitational and the State 4-H Dog Show. Details for registration will be available in early December. Citizenship Washington Focus Road trip across the USA stopping to see Gettysburg, the Liberty Bell, Philadelphia and other amazing sites along the way! Get a close-up view of the political process through visits to Capitol Hill. Meet with the Kansas Congressional and Senate delegations to discuss legislative issues. Participate in workshops and assembly groups to learn life skills and discuss possible solutions to domestic and international problems. Interact with 4-H members from other states, learning and sharing about 4-H and other interests and issues. 4-H Interviews for KRDQ/KXXX Radio Kansas 4-H and K-State Research and Extension (KSRE) needs your help with a new marketing initiative with the Rocking M Radio Network and specifically KRDQ/KXXX radio stations in Colby, KS. Megan Macy, KSRE Marketing Specialist is working with Clay Patton, the farm broadcaster in the Colby office. Clay is wanting to interview Northwest Area 4-H members. This needs to be a family willing to drive to Colby for the interview. Some interviews can be conducted over the phone, but part of the contract is to use Facebook Live while in the studio that will be shared on social media. He is looking for 4-H members of any age or project area. Most important is the 4-H member s speaking ability. We want the members to be able to articulate what they love about 4-H and why they participate in 4-H. If you would be interested in this please let the Extension Office know. Project Highlights Sheep The sheep project will help you learn more about the sheep industry. You will learn how to care for and feed a market lamb or build your own breeding flock. You can enroll in market lamb or breeding sheep. This trip will be June 15 through June 26, 2017 for youth ages years of age by January 1, For more information about the Kansas 4-H CWF trip go to:

3 ROOKS COUNTY NEWS Rooks County 4-H Council Meeting The next Rooks County 4-H Council meeting will be held Monday, November 14, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Officers will be elected at this meeting. Please contact the Stockton Office ( ) by November 9, 2016 if you would like to run for an office. Rooks County Junior Leader Happenings The Rooks County Junior Leaders met on October 10, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Treasurers were elected as follows: Emily Roy, Megan Roy and Nathan Thomas. The group decided on the following activities for the year: Arts Day Camp, Babysitting Clinic, Entomology Day Camp, Ethics Training, Fishing Clinic, Foods Day Camp, Food Stand at County Club Day, Photography Day Camp, Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, Robotics and Rocketry Day Camp, Recycled Fun and Sewing Day Camp, and Trip. The next meeting was scheduled for December 12, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Rooks County Achievement Celebration The Rooks County 4-H Achievement Celebration will be held Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stockton Junior High Gym. Following the ceremony dodgeball will be played and ice cream will be served. Rooks County Livestock Committee Meeting The next Rooks County Livestock Committee meeting will be held Monday, November 14, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. All 4-H clubs should be prepared to give a report on sale intention forms.

4 will be donated to the Orphan Grain Train and dispersed throughout Kansas and the rest of the United States. For more information please contact, Phillips-Rooks District #5 Extension Office at PHILLIPS COUNTY NEWS Phillips County Achievement Banquet The Phillips County Achievement Banquet is scheduled for November 13, 2016 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Phillips County 4-H Building. This year s meal will be catered by Bigge s Country Kitchen. Please contact the Phillipsburg Extension Office at or wendyt@ksu.edu if you plan to attend. Phillips County 4-H Event Scholarship Phillips County 4-H Council offers scholarships to Phillips County 4-H members to help with the cost to attend state and national 4-H events/contests. To receive this scholarship 4-H youth must complete a scholarship application within 30 days of attending the event. The application is available at the Phillipsburg Extension Office and is available on the Phillips-Rooks Extension District Website. ( Phillips County 4-H Council The next Phillips County 4-H Council meeting will be held on November 28, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Phillips County Fair Building. Phillips County 4-H Coat Exchange The Phillips County 4-H Council in conjunction with the local 4-H clubs is hosting a Community Coat Exchange. Individuals who are in need of a winter coat may come to the Phillips County Annex and browse the selection of coats. Those who have coats that are still in good, wearable condition, may take them to the extension office, located at th Street in Phillipsburg or take them to your local 4-H Club to be donated. The exchange will run from November 1, 2016 thru January 23, The hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The remaining coats
