3 From the Principal s Desk... Welcome back! I am actually writing this the day after MLK day. It s been some time since we ve had the chance to be off school on that day. Usually the weather creates a snow day and we end up in school. I hope you had the chance to enjoy the unusually warm weather we ve been experiencing. My family and I ended up enjoying a day of hiking and some much needed family time. 2 nd semester is underway and many are looking to the finish line that will be here before we know it. I am not sure where the year has gone, it seems like last week I was visiting with you at registration. Many exciting activities and events are planned for this semester and I know students are looking forward to them. One activity that will take place will be the enrollment for classes. Students will receive information from classroom teachers and counselors starting Friday, January 30. Our annual Enrollment Fair Night is scheduled for Wednesday, February 4 th from 5:30-7:00. Students and parents are encouraged to attend and visit with teachers about the different classes being offered. It s a great way to meet teachers, hear about classes, and begin to plan for next year s schedule. Please mark your calendars to join us on February 4 th. Although we haven t had to deal with typical Missouri weather yet this winter, we are unfortunately a long way from being out of the woods. With that being said, I want to remind you of the school messenger text and alert. It s a great way to get up-to-theminute information on school and school activities. Please remember to keep all cell phones, work numbers, and current s updated with our office so you don t miss out. Cancellations are posted on our school webpage, Channel 16, and local radio. If you stay tuned to those places for news and updates, hopefully you will stay informed. I would like to congratulate two of our students for their work with our school board. Miss Sofie Luna ended her year of service to the Rolla School Board in December. She spent the year representing the students of RPS and did a fantastic job. Mr. Jesse Liu begins his year-long term this month. He will have the opportunity to see how the board runs, provide input from a student s perspective, and be a part of a very good and involved Board of Education. A big thank you goes out to both these students as they work to make RHS and our district better. In closing, I want to thank you for your continued support and encouragement to your student s ongoing progress in education. Rolla High School faculty and staff strive every day for excellence and certainly need and appreciate all your help. If I can answer questions or be of assistance, please let me know. 6 Congratulations to the JUNIOR CLASS GIRLS for having the highest attendance rate during the month of DECEMBER WELCOME TO PBS! Steven Covey s book 7 Habits of Highly Effective people gives 7 ways to build habits to become more successful in life. One of those habits involves genuine listening skills. Part of the Bulldog Code at Rolla High School is teaching respect. Listening is a great way to show someone you respect them. The habit Covey stresses is titled, Seek First to Understand before you can be Understood. It talks about how it is critical to stand in someone else s shoes and avoid a judgmental or critical nature. It involves listening to tone of voice and body language and not just the words. It also involves using I messages instead of blaming others by starting a conversation with, you. For example, in a confrontational issue one might say, I m confused because of this grade I received. instead of You failed me. It is a way to handle issues calmly and listening to the answer before blowing up. Most issues can be resolved by proper communication. At RHS we try to teach students these communication techniques; however parents can play a big part. By modeling the same behavior teens learn to communicate in the same way. For example you might address an issue by saying, I m frustrated because of your grades; tell me what is going on with it. instead of, You don t study, or Get your grades up! Sometimes the best way to make a change in your child begins with you.

7 You can honor your senior student in the senior yearbook by purchasing space to send a special message. You can purchase up to a full page and as little as an eighth of a page, which is about the size of a business card. 8 Saturday detention is an attempt to modify unacceptable student behavior without loss of valuable classroom instruction and course credit. The administration has the discretion of assigning students Saturday detention in lieu of suspension for minor infractions. Saturday detention is held on Saturday mornings between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. under the supervision of a certified staff member of the Rolla School District. Students reporting late will be given an additional hour of detention for every 5 minutes late up to 15 minutes. Students reporting after 8:15 a.m. will not be admitted and the student/ parents will be notified of the resulting disciplinary action. Transportation is the responsibility of the student. No meals will be served. Failure to attend Saturday detention will result in additional disciplinary action up to and including suspension. Assigned detention will not be rescheduled unless there is an emergency and a parent/administrator conference is held.
