1 LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 19A NEWSLETTER Message from DG Jimmy Ho TOGETHER AS ONE APRIL/MAY 2015 Dear Lions, Lionesses and Leos: I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your enthusiastic participation in our District Annual Conference. The Conference is always made up of individuals that represent their clubs from all over our great District. Not only did we receive a great turn out from our own clubs, we had exceptionally great representation from our Multiple District and Lions Clubs International. Our District is rated the top performing district in membership growth in our Multiple District based mostly on our achievement of chartering new Lions clubs. The Vancouver Legend Lions club was chartered on May 3rd. Our Global Extension Team under the leadership of myself, Extension Chairperson David Thompson and committee member PDG Linda Wong has been working relentlessly to conclude the formation of these three new clubs. PDG Linda completed and LCI approved the charter application of the Vancouver Sunshine Lions and the Vancouver Midas Lions clubs one week after Spring Conference. We are pleased to welcome them into the Lions family. 2014/2015 has proven to be the best year of my life as a Lion. I have achieved the DG goals that we set up at the beginning of year and more, with the support of my talented and hard working cabinet members. I am dedicating the April/May 2015 Newsletter to commemorate the success of our Spring Conference. We are sharing some of the memorable moments in the subsequent pages. 5 April/May Issue P. 5 Our fun night activities did not conclude till way after mid night. Lots of group pictures were taken to remember this evening by. Everyone s happy expression shows that it was a very enjoyable night for all.

6 April/May Issue P. 6 Early birds get the worm. Our conference registration team welcomes Lions and guests to our Conference. Everyone are eager and ready for the activities ahead.

7 April/May Issue P. 7 This year we have delegates from the lower mainland as well as members from Haida Gwaii attending. This is the rare opportunity for all to catch up and renew their friendship, share the success of their club. The 720 KM distance is no longer an issue. DG Jimmy Ho was asked to be included in most of the group pictures.

8 April/May Issue P. 8 The Leo Club Program gives young people the opportunity to serve their communities and make a positive impact. This year under the directorship of Leo Liaison Kirk Dickson, our Leo Conference was held simultaneously in the same hotel as the Lions Spring Conference.

10 April/May Issue P. 10 Lions members and guests cheered on as DG Jimmy and CC Gary Reidel presented the highest award, the Medal of Merit to a local hero RCMP Sgt. Derek King on behalf of Lions Clubs. King rescued a girl from a Surrey house fire while he was off duty.

11 April/May Issue P. 11 After a whole morning of activities, our members make their entrance into the grand ballroom and are ready for delicious lunch that we arranged for them. No one is giving up photo opportunity.

13 April/May Issue P. 13 Co-Chairpersons IPDG Peter Cheng and PDG Henry Ng welcomed everyone to the luncheon. Council Chairperson Gary Reidel brought greetings from MD19. DG Jimmy Ho Gave his welcome message.

14 April/May Issue P. 14 The way to a man s heart is through his stomach. This applies to women too. Our lunch buffet was a big hit.

15 April/May Issue P. 15 Uniform parade contest took place at the luncheon with enthusiastic participation. Vancouver Chinatown Lions group invited our Medal of Merit recipient Sgt. Derek King to parade with them.

17 April/May Issue P. 17 Some 2013/2014 awards were presented. 17 DG Commendation Awards and 13 Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship were presented to contributing Lions by CC Gary Reidel, DG Jimmy Ho and IPDG Peter Cheng.

18 April/May Issue P. 18 DG Jimmy s home club, the Vancouver Metropolitan hosted the DG Reception between 3 PM to 5:30 PM to thank and meet the Lions and friends for their support all through the year. The Vancouver Metropolitan Lions members look sharp in their bright orange colour uniform jackets. The rest of the guests are dressed up and ready for the DG banquet.

19 April/May Issue P. 19 Contests and Awards receives support of both the Lions and Leos by actively participated. A big thanks to chairperson ZC Annie Lau s encouragement and energy. Cheers and excitement during this session almost brought the house down.

20 April/May Issue P. 20 The fun packed two hours at the Spring Conference. Lions are Leos showed their spirit.

21 April/May Issue P. 21 Members and guests attended the DG Banquet in their formal fineries. After the head table party was piped in by the piper, corsages and boutonnieres were distributed that further enhance the elegance of the banquet and set the tone of the evening.

22 April/May Issue P. 22 The piper piped the head table party into the grand ballroom. Group pictures were taken. What a room full of beautiful people. The ballroom was tastefully decorated. We are ready for the program of the evening.

23 April/May Issue P. 23 DG Jimmy toasted the piper. Some of earlier messages were given to kick off the DG Banquet.

24 April/May Issue P. 24 PDG Linda Wong introduced and recognized members of the head tables and VIPs.

25 April/May Issue P. 25 More introduction were made.

26 April/May Issue P. 26 Keynote message and presentation by International guest ID Don Shove.

27 April/May Issue P. 27 Banquet attendees had lots of photo opportunities. Energy was high. The DG Banquet that we were all excited with was upon us. Members use the in between courses time to touch base with one another.

28 April/May Issue P. 28 Award presentation to contributing Lions of the year. This year s IP Certificates of Appreciation were very colourful. 15 Lions were honoured with this certificate. They were jointly presented by our International guest ID Don Shove and DG Jimmy Ho on behalf of Lions Clubs International.

29 April/May Issue P. 29 More award presentation before the end of the banquet. When PDG Linda Wong and IPDG Peter Cheng received their Co-Lion of the Year award, they invited the whole Spring Conference to step up and receive this award together. DG Jimmy thanked everyone for their contribution and support in his closing message. He wished everyone a safe drive home.

30 April/May Issue P. 30 Zone Chairpersons presented appreciation plague to DG Jimmy for his guidance and leadership all through the year. DG Jimmy thanked all that attended the Conference and Banquet. This concludes the 2015 Spring Conference.

31 April/May Issue P. 31 What Leaders Do Leaders relentlessly upgrade their team, using every encounter as opportunity as an opportunity to evaluate, coach and build self confidence. Leaders make sure people not only see the vision, they also live and breath it. Leaders get into everyone s skin, exuding positive energy and optimism. Leaders establish trust with candour, transparency and credit. Leaders have the courage to make unpopular decisions and gut calls. Leaders probe and push with a curiosity that borders on skepticism, making sure their questions are answered with action. Leaders inspire risk taking and learning by settling example.
