1 Newsletter no 29 October 16th, 2018 Principal s chat Hi everyone, I would like to congratulate Tom Robertson on his election into the role of School Council President at our school. Tom is a very approachable and active member of our school community and will do a great job representing the school community s ideas and opinions. Tomorrow night we have a School Council meeting, so I will provide you with an update in the newsletter next week. Over the last few weeks we have been cleaning out the library. We have taken out all of the old books and are in the process of replacing them with some new books. Our library is looking very bare at the moment until they arrive! We have noticed that there are a lot of overdue library books. As per the library agreement signed at the beginning of your child s schooling, parents may be charged a replacement fee for missing books. Please search your homes for any school library books and return them as soon as possible. Notes will be sent home shortly advising families of overdue books and students will not be permitted to borrow from the library if they have overdue books. The students, classroom teachers and Desiree have been working hard at concert preparations. It is great to see the enthusiasm and creativity that has been coming out of the Music room over the past few days. There will be two concert performances on Thursday 25th October, one at 2pm and one at 6pm. All families are reminded that students need a basic costume of long black t-shirt and black pants with no logos. Some students have additional costume requirements as per the letter sent home last week. This letter is available on our website for you to refer to. Don t forget there is a competition for the Grade 3 to 6 students to create an advertising poster for the concert. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to create a poster and possibly have it published in a number of places. Please encourage your child to complete the advertising poster at home as part of their regular homework. Entries close tomorrow, Wednesday 17th October. A school vote will be held to decide on the winning poster. For the next two weeks we have Ebony Kramer completing an Education Support placement in the school. Ebony will be working with most classes over this time so if you see Ebony around the school please make her feel welcome. Walk, ride or scoot to school on Thursday 18th October and enjoy a fun morning before class! To celebrate Walk to School Month the Mount Alexander Shire Council is hosting a morning event at the school where students can decorate their bike, shoes or scooter and enjoy a visit from Paddy from the League of Kindness. It will be a great morning with the fun kicking off at 8.00am. It includes a free breakfast of muffins and fruit. We hope to see lots of families here! 2 Sunday. All students will be entering one piece of work but families are also encouraged to submit further entries and visit the show on Sunday to check out the display and the winning entries. The show schedule is available online and entries close tomorrow so go online and have a look. Today the Grade 5/6 students began two new projects with other schools in our cluster. This is a fabulous initiative to give students real purpose and audience for their learning. The session today was mainly about introducing ourselves and looking at the similarities and differences among the schools. Well done to Natalie and Chloe for presenting information on behalf of the class. The first project involves the grade 5/6 students completing a writing task virtually with students from four other schools. It will involve lots of student voice including deciding how and what to write about as well as giving feedback to each other about their writing. The class will also be involved in a virtual debating competition against another group of schools in our cluster. Today they were the observers, but next session some of our students will be debating against another school. These two projects are very exciting and it was great to see the enthusiasm from our students for the projects. Finally I would also like to let the school community know that John Paton has accepted an ongoing position at Epsom Primary School as of the beginning of This means that John will no longer be returning to teach at Maldon Primary School at the end of his current six month secondment. We would like to thank John for his contributions to our school, and the learning of your children, and wish him all the best in his future teaching career. Reminders Thanks Alisa Fresh Fruit Friday volunteers this week are Katie McEachran and Brenda Misso. Young Leaders Friday FUNdraiser Please leave orders with your classroom teacher. Available each Friday are: Homemade Sausage rolls $2.50, Juice Box $1.50 and Popcorn $1 Parents are reminded to include cutlery in their child s lunch box if they need it for their food. The school cutlery has all disappeared so students will not be able to use school cutlery if they do not have their own. Monday 22nd Oct Can you help? Desiree is looking for a parent to attach elastic to some bow ties for the school concert. Please let the office know if you can help out with this task.

3 Fundraising news Shopping Spree: Thank you to Megan Walmsley and her mum Mary for offering to coordinate the Shopping Spree this year. Thank you also to Kylie Trott for distributing the forms to Maldon traders and talking the event up! Keep Thursday 29th November free for a night of retail therapy and don t forget to tell family and friends about the night too! Market Day: Raffle books and money are due back at the office this Friday 19th October. Families are required to return all books even if they are not sold. Please remember to volunteer to help on Market Day. This year the rostering is being done online so please go to and enter event code 7bf4s or google School Interviews and enter event code 7bf4s to volunteer. It would be fantastic if all families could volunteer for at least two hours on the day. Keep the donations coming in to the office Mystery jars, chocolate bars, chocolate blocks, chocolate multi packs, bags of wrapped lollies, bags of lollipops, bags of soft lollies, old toys and games in good condition, small recyclable material for making sculptures, cotton fabric and beeswax. Don t forget the cake stall donations too! What s happening in the classroom? Art: Make sure you pop into the office over the next week or so to have a look at the amazing work by the Grade 5/6 class. The toys were designed by Melissa s Prep/1 class and handmade by Grade 5/6. Once completed they were given as a gift to the original designer. A few will also be given as gifts to the children at the Maldon Kindergarten. If you would like to have a closer look at each one they have been uploaded to the Instagram page (maldon_primary_art) or you can view them in person in the office but be quick as the Prep/1 class is keen to take them home!
