This has been a great fall for our school and this past month has been full of wonderful learning experiences for our students. Our 5th annual Caine s Cardboard Challenge was a big success and we thank Ms. Farries & Ms. Bruinsma and the whole staff for organizing this event. Parent teacher conferences were well attended and this critical first meeting allows parents and teachers to come together to ensure that our students needs are being met. Our students participated in WE day and Grade students participated in their wellness retreats. Our Book Fair was well attended and really brought a lot of excitement to our school - thank you Ms. McGhie for all the great work you brought to this school project. It was a record breaking year for book sales! There have been a number of field studies in many grades in October and November will also feature a number of great field studies and learning opportunities. Please make note of the Remembrance Day Service at the school on November 7th at 10:15 AM. Also of note is the School Council and Parent Association meetings on November 7-8:30pm. We d love to see as many parents out as possible. Your feedback is incredibly important. Glendale will also host a GSTS Family Movie Night on Wednesday, November 7 at 6:00-8:30pm. Flyers will be out soon with the movie listed. Check out the reviews and if you would like to come and spend some family time here at Glendale - we d love to host. We will also be selling popcorn and water at a cost of $1. There is no cost to watching the film. First term reports will go home on December 4th, For our youngest students, this is the first report card they will present to you! Some students will be apprehensive, some will be excited, some embarrassed, some happy, and some will be nonchalant. All of our students look to you first and foremost to let them know how they really did. Your response can shape your children s confidence in themselves as learners, the sense of importance they give school, and the way they are motivated to continue trying and learning. The report card is a snapshot of your children s abilities. It lets you know at a certain point in time where they ve landed. It in no way replaces the knowledge and understanding you and their teachers have of their capabilities. It is important, while wanting to motivate children, not to create anxiety or a lessening of confidence in their abilities. Students achieve a much greater degree of success if they perceive school as a positive experience and themselves as capable. Give attention to the learning process that happened throughout the term: What did you learn in today? What helped you to be successful in this term? What might you change or do differently next term? What assistance do you need? 2 Principal s note continued children learn about how they learn best, taking responsibility for their learning, and acknowledging their efforts while you help guide them to continued growth. As the second term opens, you can help your children by taking interest in their daily work, giving them specific feedback about what they are doing well, finding a quiet place and time for homework (without TV or other electronic distractions!), making sure they get enough sleep, and helping them start each day in a calm and organized way. Parent-Teacher conferences are on December 7th. General News We have held a couple of fire drills. Students are reminded to always have indoor shoes to wear in the school. In the case of an emergency there is no time to stop at a locker to put on footwear. The school is not able to supply utensils for student lunches. Parents, please be sure your child is bringing any necessary spoons or forks needed for their lunch. Now that the colder weather is here, children should be dressed appropriately to stay warm outside before the entry bell at 8:00, at both recess times and heading home after school. It may be time to bring out the scarves, toques, mittens and snow pants. Once the ground starts to get sloppy we also expect students and parents to remove all outdoor footwear on the mat at the doorways and carry them to their destination. In following this routine we can assure that students are not walking through wet hallways as they move from the entry doors to their lockers to put on their indoor shoes. It is expected that all students have a clean pair of indoor shoes to wear every day. Student verification forms were sent home with every student in October. Many have not yet returned them. It is extremely important for the school to keep current information for all students, parents and guardians. Please check all information on the form, fill in anything missing or make changes, sign the back of the form and send it in to the school. We also use as a communication tool. Please provide your address if you have not already done so. Community Liaison Parents of GSTS! Please join Mrs. Horsley and registered dietician, Gabriel Leonhardt on Thursday, November 23rd at 6:00pm for an evening of cooking, tasting and learning tips and tricks to save time and money on meals your kids will love! We will be making and tasting THREE recipes; one for breakfast, one for lunch, and one for dinner. You will be given a package with all of the recipes made that evening and more to try on your own at home! 3 Counsellor s Connections November is an important month of REMEMBRANCE! We honour all those past and present who have served and sacrificed for us. Is there any more noble or selflessness act? It is our privilege to celebrate and pay homage to these unsung heroes every year on Remembrance Day, but is one morning a year enough to show our gratitude to these courageous men and women? I think not! We can pay tribute to these individuals for their bravery through our own acts of kindness. The key word in HumanKIND is KIND! At our Middle School Retreats, the students spent time IMAGINING how our world would be different if every human was kind every minute of every day throughout the world. In one student s words, That would be so AWESOME! It would indeed be AMAZING! The students created guidelines for Glendale Gladiators to become LEGENDARY LEADERS! Let s thank all those incredibly worthy and deserving soldiers by paying forward actions of KINDNESS and RE- SPECT each and every precious moment daily. John Lennon wrote a song titled Imagine. IMAGINE a world filled with peace where we all live as one! Thanks to our Military, we have the power of CHOICE in our lives.together let s CHOOSE to make Glendale a truly LEGENDARY kind and respectful school! Learning Commons What an amazing Wild West Book Fair we had!! We set a brand new record by selling 400 books from our fair (that is almost a book for every student we have here). This means lots of amazing books will be coming to our library. Our next book fair will be in May. With the holiday season fast approaching it is time to get all our overdue library books returned. Please see Miss McGhie if you are unsure if you have any overdue books. Breakfast Club Our breakfast club is in full swing and with the cooler temperatures we are starting to see an increase in our numbers. I would like to thank everyone that has donated to our program. Donations make such a huge difference. If you would like to donate to our program please contact Miss McGhie at the School. Parent Association / School Council The Parent Association and School Council would like to thank everyone who placed orders for the AD-mazing coupon books! It was another successful fundraiser for our school. Look for information coming home for our next perogy sale fundraiser in late November! Our October Bingo was a great success with fantastic volunteers coming out to help! Volunteers are essential in keep- ing our bingos running, if you have any questions or would like to volunteer see the sign up sheet in the office. The next School Council and Parent Association meetings will be held on Tuesday, November 21 at 7pm in the learning commons. We are currently looking for a secretary to take minutes during the meetings, if you're interested please come out on November 21! We encourage all parents and any caregivers of students to please come out and join us! These meetings are a great way to learn what the association supports and contributes for the great field studies that go on at Glendale!
