It wouldn t have been possible without our community judges! Good luck to those participating in the County Contest and Area Contest in April! Teen Summit 2018 was a huge success! The SOS information is out, remember to sign up for the classes, and enjoy what our local community has to offer. There are lots of great opportunities for our 4-Her s to learn during the SOS program. There are great classes offered during Spring Break if you are not on an out of town vacation, come do projects at the Extension Office. Remember to strive to make the Best Better in all that you do! Let s see what 2018 brings for Spencer County 4-H together! Don t forget to sign up for camp, information is in this newsletter. EVERYONE ENROLLMENT FORMS Please remember to fill out the BLUE enrollment forms. It is that time to fill out new forms for the new program year starting in September. If you don t fill this out you are not a registered 4-H member and won t have early camp sign-up privileges. VOLUNTEERS If you have not filled out your volunteer application, please check out the website below. Background checks are required on all of the volunteers that help with the Spencer County 4-H Program. This is now available to be printed out from the website. Go to click on the 4-H Volunteer link on the right hand side of the screen and print off your application today. Please make sure that all forms are completed and that we receive a copy of your driver s license when the form is turned in. If all the forms are not completed when they are turned it, it will delay you getting approved as a volunteer. You can also pick up a hard copy at the Extension Office. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering with Spencer County 4-H, please talk to Mollie or a club leader today!
2 FUNDRAISERS Remember: The profit for each 4-Her selling will be held by the 4-H Council. Those dollars may be used by the child for any 4-H Program event or fee. Examples for use are: 4-H Camp, Shooting Sports Camp, Teen Summit, Teen Conference, fees due by individuals competing in shooting sports, livestock club, country hams, etc. To obtain the dollars, when needed, the parent must notify the Extension Office, and it must be used by August 31 st of the program year. If you have any questions regarding the fundraiser program for the kids or have any fundraiser ideas, please call Mollie Tichenor at COOKBOOKS COMPLETE AND FOR SALE Spencer County 4-H Council, along with the Extension Office, are proud to announce that the 2017 Spencer County 4-H Family and Friends Cookbooks are finally finished! You can get your very own 303 page cookbook that includes all of the recipes from two old Spencer County 4-H cookbooks. The price is $15 for each book. This is the first new cookbook for Spencer County 4-H in five years, but include new recipes. The profit for each 4-Her selling will be held by the 4-H Council and is $10 per cookbook. Those dollars may be used by the child for any 4- H Program event or fee. Examples for use are: 4- H Camp, Teen Conference, fees due by individuals competing in shooting sports, livestock club, etc. To obtain the dollars, when needed, the parent must notify the Extension Office. Any dollars left in the account after August 31, 2018 will be retained by the council and used for other 4-H Programs or events. This cookbook contains all the previous 3 cookbooks that have been produced plus some brand new recipes. KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS Organization Name: Spencer County 4-H Council Organization Number: Don t forget to sign up online at ADULTS COUNCIL MEETINGS The Spencer County 4-H Council will meet on May 17 at 6:30 pm at the Spencer County Extension Office. Anyone interested in being on the council, making decisions about the county 4- H program, and fundraising ideas please feel free to contact Bill Dunning, Council President, or Mollie Tichenor for additional information. Hope to see you there! UPCOMING EVENTS 4-H SUMMER CAMP It is that time of year again to look forward to summer camp. We will camp at Lake Cumberland 4-H Camp again the week of July The cost for camp is $215 this year and is open to those ages 9-13 and those finishing the 3 rd grade through 8 th grade. If you are interested, please fill out the camp application that is included in this newsletter and that way we can get you signed up for camp! Remember spots are limited and are on a first come first serve basis.
3 4-H members are getting the opportunity to sign up first beginning April 2. Camp is going to open to non-4-h members starting on April 16. Calling all Teens and Adults Volunteers are required for our youth to go to camp.teens read below, adults talk to Mollie today! Teens: Teen applications are due April 20 by 4:30p.m. If you are interested in being a teen leader, please pick up your application at the Extension Office and they are included in this newsletter! Interviews will be in May, letters will be mailed out to the teens that apply for this. All Teen Leaders applying for Camp are required to be an active 4-H member. There is still a little bit of time to get involved in a Club, but act fast! We would like to ask that you help with at least one SOS Class or a Project Day. Please note, that we would like all campers to get their 5 th year camper pins. We would like to encourage all 8 th graders to camp as campers to get to enjoy your camping time to its full potential. Please contact Mollie if you have any questions! Also for 2018, teen leaders will be required to pay for camp. At this time, the price is $75 for teen leaders, but could possibly be lowered with donations. The University of Kentucky 4-H Camping program changed the cost for the summer of 2016 and will continue in Teens do not pay until there are accepted as Teen Leaders! I hope to see you all at camp this summer! TEEN CONFERENCE 4-H State Teen Conference will be June 11-14, 2018 at the University of Kentucky. This is the state teen leadership conference for 4-Her s across Kentucky, who have completed grades 8 th 12 th. The cost is $250 and we will be staying in the new dorms that are suites with a private bathroom for every four people. If you are interested, please let Mollie know today so that you can complete the paperwork. The paperwork and deadline information will be coming out before April 1, so check with Mollie today to find out more information and to register. Remember that Achievement Winners will be recognized at Teen Conference and do receive a discounted rate. 4-H SCHOLARSHIPS The Kentucky 4-H Foundation is excited to announce its 2018 Scholarship Program. Through the support of our sponsors the Foundation is again offering six college scholarships including the James W. Kidwell Memorial, Farm Credit Mid-America, and the Michael Bandy/Ale-8-One Scholarships. To be eligible to receive one of these scholarships applicants must have been an active 4-H member for the last two years, must graduate from high school in 2018, and also be a resident of Kentucky. The deadline for scholarship applications is Friday, May 4, 2018; the applications MUST be postmarked by this date. All winners will be recognized during the 4- H Teen Conference held June 11-14, All three scholarships are available at the Extension Office. We know there are many deserving Kentucky 4-Her s for each of these scholarships so we ask that you help us get this information in their hands. The Foundation would love to see a record number of applicants this year! Through these scholarship opportunities we continue to Help Kentucky 4-H Grow! STATE 4-H BOARDS Kentucky 4-H has amazing opportunities for Senior 4-H members, 14 years old and older. There are five boards at the State level for 4-H members to take on leadership roles beyond the county level. Performing Arts Troupe, Shooting Sports Board, Science, Engineering, and Technology Board, new Health Board and the Fashion Board are all currently taking applications. Applications are due May 1, so see Mollie today if you are interested.
4 Also if any 4-H Member is interested in the State Teen Council, applications for that are available but are due April 16 to Mollie. Please contact her for additional information and to get the application. COUNTY COMMUNICATION DAY Spencer County 4-H will be hosting county communication day at the Extension Office on Saturday, April 7. Registration forms and categories were included in the March newsletter and distributed throughout March in the classroom contests. This information is available at the Extension Office. There are opportunities for youth to show their talents in a variety show, demonstrations, speeches, and senior interviews. I hope that we have a huge turnout. Judges, room hosts, and registration help are needed. Please contact Mollie at mollie.tichenor@uky.edu or if you are willing to help out for a day. The Louisville Area - District 3 Communications Contest (for county winners) will be on Saturday, April 14 th in Shelby County. The State Contest will be in July and is for Area Winners. CLUB REPORTS LIVESTOCK CLUB ATTENTION!!!!! If you are showing an animal at State Fair, Youth Expos or District shows you will need to have 6 hours of class time with the Certified Livestock Club Leader, Connie Jeffiers, for 4-H or be an active FFA member in order to compete in these shows. You will need to have in all of these hours before the Spencer County Tag In date which is May 16, There will be no extra meeting dates to get this time in. If you have any questions regarding this please contact Connie Jeffiers CLOVERBUDS Cloverbuds, ages 5-8, will meet on Thursday, April 5 th from 6:30 pm 8 pm. Hope to see you there. TEEN SUMMIT Ethan Thompson, Luke Jeffiers, Emily Truax, Valerie Pucko, Lily Cook, Ryann Truax, Erica Goodlett, and Kate Brove all participated in the 4-H Teen Summit at the Kentucky Leadership Center March 22 nd 24 th. They all took full advantage of the leadership classes that were offered. Everyone had an amazing time! Liz Walker and Noah Dunning are both on the State Teen Council and did a great job being a group leaders and leading leadership classes. The 4-H Teen Summit provides young people with essential leadership skills that can help them mature into successful, community minded adults. The Teen Summit is a Middle School age 4-H leadership conference and 4-H Teen Conference is a High School age leadership conference. SPENCER COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL REALITY STORE The 2018 Spencer County Middle School Reality Store was held Tuesday, March 27 th at the Spencer County Middle School. Thank you to everyone that volunteered to make this day a huge success for the 8 th grade students! ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS CONTESTS Thank you to all of the outstanding volunteers that helped serve as judges in the 26 elementary classroom demonstration and speech contests at both Taylorsville and Spencer County Elementary Schools. This would not have been possible without the dedication of our community volunteers. Thanks again! AG TAG PROMOTION Thank you to Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles and Spencer County Clerk Lynn Hesselbrock for taking time to promote the ag tag program (farm tags) in Spencer County on March 7 th with a few 4-H and FFA members. March is ag tag renewal month and with a $10 voluntary donation you can support our local 4-H and FFA programs. 4-H SEWING CLASS DATE & TIME: May 14 4 pm CHARGE: nonperishable food item for backpack buddy program AGE LIMIT: 9 18 yrs.
