MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER, DEVONSHIRE AREA Greetings all, Devonshire Community Police Station extends warm wishes and safe travel during these holiday months. Our officers are working hard to keep the Devonshire community safe as this tends to be a busy time of year for the increased shopping frenzy. Please remember to not leave any valuables in your vehicle, secure your property and be aware of your surroundings as you go about your business - travel with purpose! The more prepared you are, as you plan your day, the less likely you are to become a victim of a crime. This simple action may force a would-be thief to go somewhere else. Please contact your Senior Lead Officer if you wish to arrange a start-up Neighborhood Watch meeting or have questions about crime prevention tips at (818) During the month of October, there were several events organized by our Senior Lead Officers, such as the District Meeting at Church Everyday, the Pasta Dinner at St. Nicholas Church and Neighborhood Prayer Watch in Devonshire Division. We had SOLID board members, local clergy leaders and community members assist us for each successful event. Thank you to all who participated and the hospitality from each venue! Our upcoming event in November: On Thursday, November 12 th, 6:00 P.M., Coffee with the Captain, Starbucks, located at Balboa Bl., Granada Hills. This will be an evening event. For more details, contact your Senior Lead Officers or monitor our Devonshire Facebook, Nixle and Twitter social media sites. As you read through the highlights by our Senior Lead Officers, please share their messages with your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and clergy members. Our partnership between the community and Devonshire Community Police is paramount for the continued success in crime reduction for Devonshire Area. Once again, thank you all for your continued support and how we can better serve the Devonshire Area. Happy Thanksgiving! 2 BASIC CAR HIGHLIGHTS SLO Supervisor, Sgt. II Jose Torres Direct No.: (818) or Main No.: (818) BASIC CAR AREA 17A23 Senior Lead Officer Daniel Del Valle, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The crime activity of concern for Basic Car 17A23 this past month was the following: Theft (22), Burglary/Theft from Vehicle (20), and Burglary Commercial/Residential (15) for the entire month. The area that was targeted was from De Soto Ave. to Topanga Canyon Blvd. and Devonshire to Lassen Sts. Please let others know of the crime activity that is occurring in the area, and report suspicious activity. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: 17A23 s Basic Car Neighborhood Watch Meetings for November and December are cancelled for the holidays. I wish everyone a pleasant and safe holiday season. The next Basic Car 17A23 Neighborhood Watch Meeting is Thursday, January 28, Our meetings are held every 4 th Thursday of the 7:00 P.M. at Saint John Eudes Church, located at 9901 Mason Avenue. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: The holiday season is here and I encourage everyone to please be aware of their surroundings when shopping or visiting an ATM machine. This is the time of year when criminals prey upon unsuspecting citizens. Criminals look for victims that are not paying attention to others and avoid eye contact. I would suggest that if you need to visit an ATM, please do so during daylight hours, and visit one that has heavy foot traffic. If it is late, use an ATM inside a somewhat busy supermarket, or go to your nearest police station. The LAPD police stations always open and have ATM machines located near the front desk. Hope everyone has a GREAT THANKSGIVING! BASIC CAR AREA 17A35 Senior Lead Officer Dario Del Core, 27286@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: There has been a moderate increase in Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles (BTFMV) activity during the month of October. Nearly all of the incidents are occurring at night, in quiet residential areas and most of the vehicles show no signs of forced entry. Please keep in mind suspects are now using portable electronic devices to access the vehicles. It is no longer sufficient to hide valuables - all personal property needs to be removed from parked vehicles.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Neighborhood Watch meeting will be on Tuesday, November 10, 2015, 7:00 Saint Euphrasia Church, located at Shoshone Avenue, Granada Hills. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: Keep the LAPD Non-Emergency direct dispatch number, handy in your cell phone. This is the number you will use when you need to report suspicious activity, prowlers, and disturbances to the police department. Stay on hold until you can speak with an operator or until the situation escalates to a crime-in-progress at which point, if you are still on hold, you will hang up and dial 911 directly. Be ready to provide as much detail as possible regarding the location of occurrence, suspects involved, and type of vehicle, if any. BASIC CAR AREA 17A49 Senior Lead Officer Janine Angeles, 30392@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following crime statistics are from January 1, 2015 to October 3, These numbers reflect the number of crimes which occurred in Basic Car 17A49 only. There were (78) Grand Theft Autos, (19) Robberies, (159) Thefts, (150) Burglaries, (77) Aggravated Assaults and (217) Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles. The crime in our Basic Car Area is up 36.1% from last year at this time. Be aware of your surroundings! Please report suspicious activity. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Neighborhood Watch meeting for 17A49 will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2015, 7:00 Brookdale of Northridge, Devonshire Street. This will be our last Basic Car Meeting for the year. In honor of Thanksgiving, please feel free to bring your favorite cookie or dessert to share at the meeting! CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: As we all know, Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicle (BTFMV) has been an ongoing problem in Devonshire Division. Suspects are breaking into vehicles to take whatever they can. Unfortunately, many of the victim s vehicles have been left unlocked making them an easy target. Always lock your vehicle and do not leave any of your important items inside - this includes papers (with your personal information), purses, wallets and electronic devices. Happy Thanksgiving to you all! PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A START UP MEETING! IT IS VERY EASY!
BASIC CAR AREA 17A67 Senior Lead Officer Patti Peteque, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: We are still experiencing Catalytic Converters thefts taken from vehicles parked on the street. Over the last month, the Catalytic Converters were taken at all hours, with a majority being taken during the late-night and early-morning hours. Additionally, property is being taken from unlocked vehicles. Remember that suspects walk through neighborhoods and parking lots, looking into vehicles for easy theft. Remember to LOCK YOUR DOORS! It s not only the value of the property taken from your vehicles, but also the damage done to the vehicle when suspects break in. These incidents can be reduced by not leaving your items in plain sight in your vehicle, and by leaving those items inside your secured trunk. Work with your neighbors and be on the lookout for suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Look for individuals loitering in parked vehicles on the street. Look for prowlers, working in teams, appearing overly alert, and using cell phones as they go through the neighborhood. If you suspect criminal activity may be involved, please contact the non-emergency phone number , and give a detailed description of the vehicles and individuals involved. Continue to use 911 for all emergencies and crimes in progress. Stay alert and remain vigilant at all times! NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Neighborhood Watch meeting will be on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, 7:00 Calahan Street Elementary School, Knapp Street, in Northridge. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: Lock your vehicles; Hide your valuables; and Report suspicious activity. BASIC CAR AREA 17A81 Senior Lead Officer John Parker, 36560@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following crime statistics are for the month of October There were (4) Robberies; (7) Aggravated Assault; (11) Grand Theft Autos; (37) Thefts; (12) Burglaries; and (15) Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles. Most of the crimes occurred on Monday & Saturday from 12:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. Most of the vehicle thefts are mid-1990 s Honda Civics and Accords.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Neighborhood Watch meeting is on Thursday, November 19, 2015, 7:00 P.M., at the Garden Christian Fellowship, Nordhoff Street, in Chatsworth. This will be the last meeting for the year due to the holidays and it will be a Pot Luck event. Please coordinate with my Chairperson - Mary Alice Sears for further details at neighborhoodwatch17a81@gmail.com. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: The holidays are here and criminals are watching. This is the perfect time to get involved and engaged in the community. I want to provide a few programs that will help you remain vigilant and prepared for the end of the year. Start a Neighborhood Watch Program to become a block leader ask your Senior Lead Officer; Sign up on our free social media sites: Nextdoor, Nixle, Crimemapping; LAPD Facebook & Twitter; and LAPDONLINE to stay informed about your community; Become a volunteer - either through our Volunteer Surveillance Team or the Volunteer Bike Patrol unit - to assist our fellow officers; Attend our Community Police Academy Program; Encourage your kids to be a part of our PALS or Devonshire Cadet Program; -AND- Community police your neighborhood! If you see something, say something! Call 911 (Emergency/Crime-in-Progress) or 1 (877) (Non-emergency) All of these ideas will help you stay informed about crime in your area, provide suggestions for crime safety and unite the community to stand up against crime. Also, if you have any innovative ideas to fight crime, please share them with me. I don t have all the answers, but strive to make a safer community. Happy Thanksgiving and be safe! BASIC CAR AREA 17A95 Senior Lead Officer Efren Corral, 35472@lapd.lacity.org Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: We unfortunately have seen an increase in our vehicle-related crimes for 17A95. From September 27 th, 2015 thru October 3 rd, 2015, there were (4) vehicles burglarized. Year to date, vehicles broken into are up 38.4 %, compared to 2014 crime numbers. Also, during the same time period, there were (4) vehicles stolen. Year-to-date, vehicles stolen are up 30.4 %, compared to 2014 crime numbers. Please protect your property! Our auto related crimes can be easily avoided; please remember Lock It, Hide It, Keep It.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: The next Neighborhood Watch meeting for Basic Car 17A95 will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2015, 7:00 P.M., located at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Plummer Street. CRIME PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS: It is important to remain vigilant during the upcoming holiday season. Be aware of solicitors that go door-to-door offering their services. While some are legitimate, there are those who case homes for possible future break-ins. There are also those who pose as city workers to commit distraction burglaries. Make sure you answer the door or talk through the door making your presence known. Do not let them inside your house if they do not have proper ID, and always have your phone handy to call police if need be. You can call our non-emergency number (1(877) ASK- LAPD, or dial ) to report suspicious people in your neighborhood.
