Agent, 4-H 4-H Summer Camp at Camp Grant Walker If you want to make new friends and have a lot of fun, and you are in the 3rd through 6th grade, you should plan to join us at 4-H Summer Camp. This year we will be camping July , Our camp is held at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA. Cost of summer camp iincludes all camp fees, 3 meals a day, snacks and transportation to camp from Lake Charles. Scholarships are available to 4-H members on free or reduced lunch. Total cost for summer camp will be $ To reserve your spot you must send in a non-refundable deposit of $50 along with the camp form found in this Cloverleaf no later than April 15 th. 2 4-H Achievement Day 2016 Our final contest day of the year is nearly here...achievement Day will be on March 22, 2016 at the Burton Complex in Lake Charles. This day will be filled with fun, workshops, contests, and excitement. To attend 4-H Achievement Day, clubs will need to arrange transportation to and from the Burton Complex (for parish schools, permission has been granted by the school board office to use Achievement Day as a field trip), provide lunch for your members (no concessions will be offered at Achievement Day), and let the 4-H office know how many students you will be bringing and what grades they are in by March 11, Youth will be divided into groups based on grade and will have tracks designed for each grade level. Contests that will be offered at achievement day are Insect ID, Wildlife Habitat Judging, Photography, Dog Care, Fishing Sports, and Horticulture ID. Study guides for the contests can be found on our website or by checking out the study guide flash drives at the office. The QR code to the left will take you to the contest study guide page. Achievement day activities will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 2:00 pm giving everyone time to get back to school before dismissal. 4 4-H Scholarships for Graduating Seniors All scholarship applications must be received in the Calcasieu 4-H office by Friday, February 26, 2016 at 4:30pm Gulf Highway, Lake Charles, LA Please note the following reminders regarding the 2016 scholarship applications: There is no limit for how many entries a parish may enter per scholarship. A 4-H er may enter any Louisiana scholarship they qualify for. 4-H Summer Camp Pre-Registration - 3rd - 6th graders Camp: July 18-22, 2016 Make check for $50.00 deposit payable to Calcasieu 4-H. Mail to: Calcasieu 4-H, 7101 Gulf Hwy., Lake Charles, LA Due April 15, Name: Address: Sch ool: Applications are to only cover the last three years of 4-H work (no project book is required.) Applicants for the $100 Parish Scholarships should minimally complete Section 1 & 6. The deadline for applications to be received in the Calcasieu Parish 4-H office is February 26, 2016 at 4:30 pm. This deadline will be strictly enforced. Applicants for scholarships must be a 2016 graduating high school senior and entering college or technical schoolin the Summer or Fall General scholarship requirements are: 1.4-H Scholarship Application Form (extra pages added only where option is given). Application should betyped. Any handwritten applications will be docked 5% of their overall score. 2.Transcript of grades; including mid-term grades signed by an appropriate school official. Phone: 3.Copy of ACT scores. Age: Grade: 4.Letter of recommendation from an academic advisor (teacher, guidance counselor, principal) on school letter head stationery. Parent s Signature: 5.Must meet requirements as stipulated in the scholarship criteria (see last 3 pages of the packet) 6.Parish 4-H Agent must validate all 4-H information submitted is accurate. Validation is done with his/hersignature in Section 1. Scholarship packets may be obtained at the 4-H office, via , or by seeing club leaders (they were ed to club leaders in January). If you have any questions, please contact the 4-H office. 4-H Portfolios Are Due March 18 There is still plenty of time to get your 4-H projects and portfolios completed before the March 18 due date. The first thing you need to do to get started is to read your project books to determine how many activities you need to complete and then complete that number of activities in the book. After your project book activities are completed, you ll need to complete your 4-H Portfolio to turn in with your projects. The portfolio is available online at Click on Teens at the top of the page. You can complete the portfolio online and save it to your computer. This should make completing your book easier than ever! More detailed instructions on completing your portfolios is available on the back of this Cloverleaf! The record book contest and Achievement Day are your last opportunities to qualify to attend 4H University in June! Remember you need 3 things to complete your portfolio: Completed Project Book Completed 4-H Portfolio for all records. Some type of cover to hold it all together.

5 National 4-H Conference is the premier 4-H civic engagement national opportunity for youth. National 4-H Conference is the annual premiere national civic engagement opportunity for 4-H members across the country. Delegates will not only learn while at the conference. Delegates have the opportunity to practice and apply in a real world setting their newly developed and refined skills. Land Grant University 4-H Departments send a delegation size of their choice to participate in the conference. The selection and registration process is up to each Land Grant University 4-H Department. Youth delegates must be between ages 15 (by January 1 of the conference year) and 19 years old. The delegates choose an important societal topic and in round table groups prepare a briefing. During the conference, the groups present their briefing to federal officials around the Washington, D.C. area. 6 Living a Heart Healthy Lifestyle February is American Heart month, and it s never too early to learn about the prevention and management of heart Many of us may have had a family member that has suffered from a heart attack or stroke. There are ways to reduc risk of heart disease by making simple lifestyle choices. Reduce intake of animal products that are high in fat such as, egg yolks, meats, butter, cheese and whole milk. Try ing egg whites, skim milk and low fat cheese. Eat more grilled or baked meats verses the fried fast food options. Li amount of salt you eat. A lot of foods we eat today are pre-packaged fast foods, potato chip, cakes, pies and pickles just to name a few. Increas fruits and vegetables daily by eating at least five servings a day and adding whole grains such as whole wheat bread and oatmeal, which also ad to your diet. Fiber can also aid in the prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. And last but not least STAY ACTIVE! Physical activity is a great w build confidence, increase strength and to be a champion in sports related activities. It is recommended that youth get 60 minutes most days of t of physical activities. So to live a heart-healthy lifestyle, just remember the basics: cut back on the foods that aren t good for the heart, like high fatty foods and salt; inc rate the foods that are good for the heart, like fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains that are full of fiber and get at least 60 minutes of physica most days of the week Shatonia McCarty, MS, RD, LDN Area Nutrition Agent
