11 Civic Improvement Commission Report Campbell Historical Museum & Ainsley House April 10, 2014 COLLECTION & CONSERVATION City Council Study Session On March 18, Museum staff presented a report on the state of the City s Museum collections in a Study Session with City Council and requested funding for a two-year, full-time, temporary Collection Specialist position in order to address some of the significant challenges facing the collection. Council was supportive of the staff recommendation. Several members of the audience also voiced their concerns about the collection and their support for the staff recommendation. In addition to the staff position, the Museum has also submitted a Capital Improvement Proposal to update the Ainsley Basement collections storage area, and Building Maintenance Requests to replace UV film and awnings on the Ainsley House windows and repair the weathered doors, as part of the FY15 budget process. Collection Inventory The first phase of the Ainsley House inventory is nearly complete. Volunteers have contributed over 120 hours of service on this project and have inventoried over 600 objects. Once the physical inventory is complete, Collections Specialist, Anna Rosenbluth will identify any objects without accession numbers and develop conservation plans for items with damage from pests or other sources. She will also work with volunteers to update the computer records with current images and condition information. This project will likely take the rest of 2014 to complete. Two other volunteers have been working with staff to process a backlog of donations accepted between 2006 and 2008 when the Museum lacked a Collections Specialist. The donations include three boxes from Jeanette Watson of which over 200 items have been inventoried to date. Recently, the Museum has received a number of research requests and public inquiries, particularly in regards to historic properties. Professional Development The Museum s Collections Specialist will be attending the Historic House Museum Issues and Operations workshop in San Francisco presented by the American Association for State and Local History in April. Registration costs were funded by a donation from the Campbell-San Jose West Rotary Foundation The workshop will explore topics related to historic house museums, including management, collection, interpretation, marketing, volunteers, earned income, membership programs, and care of buildings and landscapes. Resources and information from the workshop will be shared with other Museum staff.

12 PROGRAMS 2014 Exhibit The 2014 Ainsley House exhibit, The Spirit of Campbell, combines historic photos from the Museum collection with contemporary photos submitted by community members. The historic photographs will be displayed in the Sleeping Porch while the contemporary photographs will be on view in the Morgan Gallery/Carriage House. We received 17 submissions for the exhibit, which is on view through June 30, The March 8 opening reception was well attended by participating photographers, their families, and the general public. Visitors to the exhibit will be able to vote for the contemporary photograph that they feel best represents the spirit of Campbell. We are considering dates near the end of June to have a small ceremony where the winning photograph is officially accessioned into the City s collection. Community Outreach Senior Museum Specialist, Julie Carpenter, has been working to raise public awareness of, and engagement with, the Museum by attending meetings of neighborhood associations and other community organizations including Downtown, Hamann Park, San Thomas West, Pruneyard- Dry Creek, Campbell Country Woman s Club, Kiwanis, Merrill Gardens, and Rotary. School Programs This academic year the Museum s education programs have: 13 traveling trunk bookings 109 Hands-on-History programs at the Campbell Historical Museum 11 History Detectives programs at the Ainsley House Additional bookings are still likely this year. Weddings The first 2014 Ainsley Garden wedding will take place April 26 with 17 other weddings booked for the season. There are also five non-wedding events taking place in the Ainsley Garden. Requests for 2015 bookings are being taken by staff.

13 April 2014 Commission Report Nancy Howe, County Librarian Always Available Classic ebooks ebooks have become very popular with our patrons. Currently, when our patrons check out an ebook, they are sent to the vendor s page, away from the library s catalog, to check that item out. SCCLD wanted to create a prototype for a different model. SCCLD received a grant to develop a model for patrons to download ebooks directly from our catalog. Patrons can search our catalog, find a title, and with a click, download the item without inputting a library card number. The ebook does not expire, so patrons can take as long as they want to read the item. We are focusing on classic literature for the scope of this grant. You can find the records in our catalog by going to and typing in the search term always available classics in our catalog. We hope that other library systems will continue development of this prototype. Partnership with Local Start Up to Revitalize Interest in Episodic Fiction SCCLD and JukePop, Inc., a Palo Alto start up company specializing in reading analytics for selfpublishing, have joined forces to provide free access to stories written by talented up and coming authors. This exciting project is the first of its kind in the United States, and increases access to serialized or episodic novels, a popular emerging genre in publishing today. An episodic novel is a narrative that includes incidents and events loosely connected by a central character or characters. Authors such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Harriet Beecher Stowe popularized this art form in the nineteenth century. The revitalization of this format offers readers a fun and innovative way to enjoy literature. The public can access JukePop s titles on the SCCLD website starting on April 1, 2014; a library card is not required to view the content. Selected JukePop authors and book titles featured on the SCCLD website are separated into two categories: completed novels and works of episodic fiction. In both categories, readers will get to explore the work of a variety of authors new to the publishing arena. Upcoming JPA meeting The Santa Clara County Library District Joint Powers Authority Board will hold its next regular meeting on April 17 at 1:30 pm at the Library Services and Support Center, 1370 Dell Avenue in Campbell, for its first reading of the fiscal year budget, which will be submitted for final approval in June.
