1 FCS Connection August 2013 Floyd County Schools Superintendent s Message Special points of interest: 2013 Retirees Opening Day KIDS & Summer Tragedy & Teamwork FCS Goals TOP 50 SCHOOL DISTRICT 2. College & Career readiness rate of 65% by Each school meets/exceeds NCLB and KPREP goals 4. Every student meets/exceeds AMO expectations. 5. Remain fiscally solvent & efficient. A. KPREP 58.5 B. ACT 18.1 C. Attendance 96% school year is off to an outstanding start for the KIDS of Floyd County! Initial visits and reports indicate that there are GREAT things already occurring across our district as we have all schools and our school community working as a team to meet our goals for our KIDS: Although 2014 is off to a great start our TEAM was once again challenged by flooding at McDowell Elementary School. Very quickly, over half a foot of water was in three of our buildings which quickly destroys materials and leaves mud behind for everyone to clean up! A new principal and his team who worked so hard to get the school ready for the new year was now dealing with this situation. We are very proud of their efforts and their attitude in dealing with high water at MES once again. The board members and I thank our Floyd County Schools Team for the work they do often, but on August 13th, 2013, we were surprised and humbled by the tremendous outpouring of volunteerism at MES. So many schools were represented there, so many community members and our maintenance team was simply amazing. People doubted school opening back only two days later, but thanks to YOU, it happened for our KIDS! Some may say that this was a major setback to the beginning to our school year, but I don t think they re seeing the big picture. Thanks to some flash flooding, we have been reminded what teamwork can achieve and that our team and community continues to do Whatever it Takes for KIDS. Challenges will continue, Opportunities will present themselves, and reaching our goals will not be an easy task. However, our TEAM and our Community is ready to meet each and every challenge and each goal for our KIDS. Ensuring that EVERY CHILD is College & Career ready is a nonnegotiable for the success of our young people. Thank you for what you do for our KIDS every day. It is an honor to serve our 6,500 KIDS with such a dedicated and committed team! Let s make 2014 the best year in the history of Floyd County.

6 Page 6 TEAMWORK On August 12, 2013, McDowell Elementary School was a location that symbolized the tragic impact of flooding. On August 13, 2013, McDowell Elementary School was a location that symbolized what teamwork and community can accomplish. And thanks to volunteers from AES, AMS, ACHS, ACMS, BLES, OES and more to community member after community member, on August 15th, McDowell Elementary was once again a location symbolizing education.
