1 THE 4-H FOCUS October H Families and Friends, Let the new year begin! We hope everyone is getting excited about the year. As you re completing your enrollment, start thinking about the goals you have for yourself and for your club. If you re a returning 4-Her, what can you do to make this year the best one yet? How can you serve your community and become a better leader? If you re brand new to 4-H, what would you like to learn this year? If you have any questions, don t hesitate to ask. We re here to help! Here s to another exciting year with Loudoun County 4-H! We can t wait to see what s in store for Carly Griffith Kim Monroe Extension Agent, 4-H 4-H Program Technician carlymg@vt.edu kmonroe@vt.edu Project Book DEADLINE Any member who was active in 4-H during the year must submit their completed Project Book(s) to the Extension Office no later than 5PM on Friday, October 12th in order to show at the 2019 Loudoun County Fair. *This includes members that did NOT show at the Fair in 2018, but were still active in their club(s).* If you are still unsure whether or not you need to submit a Project Book, please reach out to your club leader(s) as soon as possible to confirm. Don t wait until the last minute to turn them in - NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED! Project Books can be found here: Extension is a joint program of Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and state and local governments. 2 County News 4-H Enrollment - NOW OPEN! Enrollment for Loudoun County 4-H is completed online through the web-based program, 4HOnline. All returning members must re-enroll every year, even if all of their information remains the same. To access 4HOnline, please visit: Detailed instructions for new enrollment were just sent out to the county listserv. For questions about registering with 4HOnline, please contact Kim at kmonroe@vt.edu. It only takes a few minutes, so don t wait - ENROLL TODAY! IMPORTANT: Members will not receive credit for attending any events, meetings or activities until they are officially enrolled in their clubs for the new year. A grace period is given until November 1 st to allow adequate time to complete enrollment. Additionally, for those who plan to participate in the Loudoun County Fair, enrollment must be completed prior to January 1 st, 2019.

3 County News Success at the State Fair Congratulations to Jill Harrison on her accomplishments at the State Fair of Virginia in Doswell last weekend. She competed in the Junior Dairymen s Contest which had over 272 entries, presented a promotional display for Milk Matters and showed 5 of her Brown Swiss heifers. She was Grand Champion of the Brown Swiss Youth Division and Junior Champion of the Brown Swiss Show Open Division with Dublin Hills Bosephus Samantha. She had Reserve Champion of the Brown Swiss Show Youth Division and Reserve Junior Champion of the Brown Swiss Show Open Division with Dublin Hills GPS Sabryna ET. Jill also received Honorable Mention for the Herdsman Award and won a $650 Senior Scholarship for her combined promotions with Milk Matters, Showmanship and competing in the Junior Dairymen s Contest. Jill is a senior at John Champe High School and she plans to study veterinary medicine. Way to go, Jill!

4 Club News Sheep Club Submitted By: Alexandra Knight The Loudoun County 4-H Sheep Club had our monthly meeting on September 5 th. The club elected officers for the H year. The new President is Jeremiah Morrison, the Vice President is Arielle Knight, the Secretary is Andrew Knight and the Treasurer is Eva Morrison. The Reporter is Alexandra Knight and the Historian position was tabled. If you are interested in joining the Sheep Club, feel free to visit a meeting! Wise and Wild Submitted By: Gaebriel Olsen The Broadlands 4-H Club is newly formed and as such the club has not yet had their kickoff meeting. However, we have had three Officers meetings and our current leadership is as follows: Erin Fairlight and Wendy Cook are our Club Leaders. Our President is Sage, Vice President, Chloe, Secretary, Myriam and Gaebriel as Reporter. We will be electing a Treasurer soon. The members and Officers are excited to continue the start of this club and to participate in its activities. Signing off for now. Canterlopes Submitted By: Grayson Weber and Jessica Tillman At the September Canterlopes meeting our main activities were Officer elections and a lesson on what we need to bring on a long distance horse trip. President: Marissa Jones Vice President: Andie McMann Secretary: Calle Junker Treasurer: Steph Cordell Reporters: Grayson Weber and Jessica Tillman During the lesson we learned what to bring on a long distance horse trip and the difference between things that would be nice to have versus things that we need.

5 Club News Beef Club Submitted By: Taylor Miller The Beef Club is off to a great start this year. We closed out the 2018 year by electing the new Officers. The President this year is Kelsi Lawson, Vice President is Riley Ashby, Secretary is Taylor Miller, Treasurer is Erin Calley, Reporter is Taylor Miller and Historian is Emily Stanford. Congratulations to everyone! Members are all in the process of obtaining our new projects and if you are having trouble locating a calf please contact any of the Beef Club leaders. As a reminder, our next meeting will be October 17, 2018 at 7:00pm. Overlook Horse Club Submitted By: Ashley Carusi Our September meeting was a small but important one. Four of our members were present, and we had a possible new member shadow the meeting. Though we had a small group, we voted on Officer positions for the new 4-H year. We voted for President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Everyone was voted in unanimously, with the exception of the Vice President. For the remainder of the meeting we participated in our educational activity. The activity for this meeting was working on our project books.

6 Club News Chefs & Stitches Submitted By: Adrianna Evans At our last meeting we sewed. We all brought our own sewing machines and we chose the fabric we liked. Some of us chose snakes to make, others chose neck warmers. We re really looking forward to this year! Rabbit Hopping Submitted By: Mary Grace Menuey The Loudoun County 4-H Rabbit Hopping Club held it s September meeting on September 7 th. We got last minute nominations and elected Officers. Our newly elected President is Eleni Kasianides. Our Vice President is Teagan Russell, our Secretary is Anna Kasianides, our Treasurer is Sarah Burns, our Reporter is Mary Grace Menuey and our Historian is Grace Kasianides. At the end of our meeting we also talked about bringing rabbits to Joshua s Hands Fall Festival. Poultry Club Submitted By: Caroline Ludwig This September was our last meeting of the H year. We elected our Officers. Our new President is Jon Marc Truesdale. Our Vice President is Paisley Ashland. Our Secretary is Mackenzie Shore. Our Reporter is Caroline Ludwig. Our Historian is Viktoria Scharf. Besides elections we discussed committees, finances for the new 4-H year and we even mentioned Fair. Next month we will find out what committees we are on and further discuss our goals. See you next month! Goat Club Submitted By: Clay Grisius Last meeting, our club elected new officers. Carly Campbell was elected President. Amelia Huddleston was elected Vice President. Clayton Grisius was elected Secretary and Reporter. Shane Mitchell was elected Treasurer. Paisley Ashland was elected Historian. Leah Scharf was elected to be the Fair Committee representative. Our Sergeant at Arms is Sina Scharf. We also discussed the Joshua s Hands community event and other old business.

7 Club News Dairy Club Submitted By: Christian Gurdak We had a discussion on whether to expand the club or to keep it at its current size. We also had our elections, along with vet practice at Virginia Tech. Our new President is Amanda Thomas. We voted to invite the first four people on the waiting list to join the club. Swine Club Submitted By: Hunter Flynn At the September Swine Club meeting the club voted on new Club Officers for the H year. The club also voted to release the premiums for the 2018 Fair. As a club we also talked briefly about fundraising for the new year. Leaps & Squeaks Submitted By: Sabrina Marvil At our September meeting the Leaps & Squeaks Club held Officer elections. We did not have a quorum to vote in person so the candidates filmed their videos and the members voted on a google form. We elected Roxanne Howard as President, Amelia Abbe as Vice President, Emily Csizmadia as Secretary, Mikayla Sanders as Treasurer, Sabrina Marvil as Reporter and Abbie Swart as our Historian. Eastern Loudoun Submitted By: Oishee Sinha Our first meeting for the Eastern Loudoun 4-H Club was in September. It consisted of many different events including awarding pins and badges to people who were here last year and an individual award as well! Our Secretary won the award, which is passed on by the previous winner to another 4-H member of their choice. Second, we reviewed Officer positions, subsequently discussing potential projects to join. Each club leader provided us with a brief description of the project they re leading as well as the meeting dates. We ended our meeting by choosing which projects to sign up for. It is sure to be a great year!
