It is hard to believe it is fall...84 degrees outside! This year has gone by really fast. After much hard work on Tim's part, and 12 s back and forth to DMC, our host trip is postponed until June We have the auction coming up in November and the Christmas Party Dec 1.. In October, the slate of officers will be presented and you will vote in November. We will be collecting the Christmas party dinner money this meeting so make your reservation. We will also begin the party raffle. We should have about 3 or 4 items to choose from. Tickets will be $1 or 6 for $5. See you at the meeting which should be of interest to anyone wanting to start a business. Our speaker will give us tips on sales, marketing and pricing. DIANE President

2 High Country Gleamings Page 2 Vice-President s Report By Kathryn Hackett Fields OUR NEXT (AND LAST!) 2018 PROGRAM. I m looking forward to our October 15 th Club meeting and the program, Design, Skills, Marketing and Fun which will feature guest speaker Mr. Clyde Volpe. You may have heard him on the radio, 1350 AM. He graciously offered to share his passion with us - the advertising/marketing experience of 47 years he has turned into Asheville Business for Success. This is a monthly meet-up offering topics that any of you who are selling or are considering a start-up could put to immediate use. Clyde s talk will follow a short presentation on the first two points, Design and Skills. Come and learn something new - it s a great time of the year to enjoy downtown Hendersonville before or after the Club meeting. Huge THANKS from your VP to Tim Barton, and to Lafayette Prescott. Tim not only helped with and then presented Fossil Preparation for me while I was at Wm. Holland, but stepped in to expand his annual post-thanksgiving Day Lake Douglas field trip into one suitable for our Club s obligation to host a trip for DFMS. Lafayette has volunteered to be our auctioneer for the November meeting s lively and very worthwhile auction. Now I can relax and have fun, too. Club members - you all have something to offer! Board positions are still open for 2019, and the next VP will need speakers, demonstrations, and information to share with us as the new year begins. We ll need refreshments for the last two meetings, and a few to help Deb Baw with Christmas party logistics. Deb Harmon can always use articles for the bulletin - what did you do or learn in 2018 that you could share to help our club grow larger, and deeper? Bring it!

Mineral & Lapidary Museum Notes by Jerry Howe, CM and MLM Board Chair September was a very busy month for the Mineral & Lapidary Museum. We had 4321 visitors in September including 3 tour groups consisting of a total of 48 visitors. Hurricane Florence actually had a positive effect on the Museum. Many refugees from Florence came to the Hendersonville area, and many of them visited the Museum. I am sure that the World Equestrian Games also helped our attendance figures this past month. Club member Kevin Jones is the ARTIST OF THE MONTH at the Museum. A display of his work will be featured all of this month. Due to his work schedule, Kevin may not be able to demonstrate his talents one Saturday this month, but you can still come and admire his work. As most of you know, the Club (HCGMS) and the Mineral and Lapidary Museum, although separate organizations, are closely connected. Club members were instrumental in the founding of the Museum more than 20 years ago, and Club members continue to be very important to the operation of the Museum today. Here are 5 ways you can help the museum: (1) Volunteer 1 day a month. Volunteers are key to the continued success of the Museum. More than half of all Museum volunteers are also members of the HCGMS. Call Diane Lapp ( ) and volunteer to help. (2) Help spread the word about the Museum. Every month we have visitors from the Hendersonville area who tell us they had never previously visited us (and often didn t even know of our existence). (3) Consider doing some of your Christmas shopping at the Museum. Our gift shop area has great gifts for spouses, children, grandchildren, and friends. Jennifer and I have 8 grandchildren, and each one is getting a gifts we purchased at the Museum. (4) Some visitors specifically ask for examples of North Carolina minerals. Consider donating some you have acquired. They don t need to be large (2-3 is ideal) and certainly don t need to be museum quality. (5) Make a tax deductible monetary gift to the Museum. For an annual donation of $ 25 or more, you become an official Sponsor of the Museum. Hope to see you at the Museum soon!

5 High Country Gleamings Page 5 Henderson County Gem and Mineral Society Meeting Minutes September 17, 2018 Diane Lapp, President, called the meeting to order at 7 pm. Motion to accept the August Minutes was made by Landen Gailey and seconded by Tom Lapp. Committee Reports Vice President, Kathy Fields absent at William Holland Secretary, Alma Lambert absent at William Holland Treasurer, Jacolyn Campbell - we are solvent as of August 31 Member at Large, Deb Baw absent at William Holland. If you have Rock Bucks let her know. Education, Charlotte Caughman ill Scholarship, Larry Allison- absent at William Holland. We are moving right along with two applicants for the scholarship. Workshop, Cindi Stroud nothing to report Membership, Landen Gailey 26 members at this meeting. Don Meador won the door prize. Three guests including Betty and Ed Lockwood who won the Grand Prize at the Gem show. The Childs Grand Prize was won by Lale Coskin and the Raffle was won by Scott Wilkie. Gerald Boykin brought beautiful cabs and Bob Sarabia brought Moqui Marbles for Bring and Brag. Publilcity, Tom James nothing to report. Old Business The nominating committee still needs someone willing to be Vice President, Secretary and Member at Large. Now is a good time to step up. New Business Christmas Party is December 1st. And the Auction is this November. There are several field trips coming up and the Open Studio Art Tour in Henderson County. Show Report Jacolyn gave a brief talk about what goes on to put the Gem Show together. There is a lot Involved! She also gave a rough financial report as she didn t have all the expenses yet but said it was a really good show profit wise. To study and collect rocks, minerals and fossils To cooperate with libraries, educational institutions and other associated clubs or groups To increase the knowledge and popular interest in geology, mineralogy and lapidary arts via displays, programs and field trips To support the Club and the Gem and Lapidary Arts Museum outreach to the general public DUES: Dues are $15 per adult per year and $5 for children. Children must have adult family member participation. You may join at any General Meeting or contact Landen Gailey. OFFICERS LAPIDARY SHOP: Must be a paid member. Fee is $4 & must be 18 or over, Program fee $1. Must have orientation on equipment before using it in the shop. Supervisor must be present. GENERAL MEETINGS: 3 rd Monday of each month (except Dec.) In the Operations Center, Public Works Building at 305 Williams Street, Hendersonville, off 4 th Ave East. Start time is 7 pm. Come early for fellowship and refreshments.
