1 4-H Connects St. Mary s County 4-H Winter 2018 The Motto of 4-H is to Make the Best Better, and this year, St. Mary s youth did just that. Over 200 members participated in 10 community clubs and over 200 participated with our military partners. Forty-two youth and 4 youth counselors participated in the inaugural return of 4-H Day Camp to St. Mary s. Our members entered 1,336 exhibits in the county fair. Not only the youth Helpful Links RECORD BOOK FORMS It s that time of year again! Make sure you have the correct forms. We thank everyone for their efforts. The theme for our county 4-H in 2018 was Belonging and Independence. We have enjoyed watching our youth grow up over the year to become leaders and helpers. We have enjoyed hearing about activities your clubs have done so members can have shared experiences. 2 Summer Day Camp 2018 July brought the return of summer camp to St. Mary s County. We had 42 youth attend five days of summer camp. The end of the week was capped off with over 40 other youth joining for Farm and Home Safety Day sponsored by St. Mary s County Young Farmers and 4-H All Stars. We had four 4-H members as junior counselors and 4 adult counselors. Campers had a chance to play games, make crafts, try shooting sports, do skits, meet farm animals, and learn about gardening and watersheds. In addition, the campers picked tracks to learn about subjects more in depth. Campers tried sewing, ceramics, engineering, aerospace, cake decorating, and robotics. In their own words: State Fair By Nathan Raley of Tudor Hall 4-H Club This was my first year attending state fair. Even though I didn t bring home any high placing rib- Page 2 bons, I had a great experience. I rode in the horse show with my pony Pumpkin on Saturday morning. We three 4ths, one 5th and a 6th. I did sheep showmanship that evening and placed 3rd. We went to the horse barns to get pumpkin fed and settled in for the night. When I was walking pumpkin a news reporter came up to me and I did an interview with her that was on the evening and morning news. We stayed at state fair that night and made a lot of new friends that were also staying with their ani- mals for the night. On Sunday I showed my breeding sheep and then we packed up to come home. I would encourage everyone to attend state fair at least once just for the experience. -NR 4-H Connects
