The cost for camp this year is $ A discounted cost of $ will be given to the first 100 campers turning in a totally complete (physical, insurance card, etc.) registration packet. Also, a limited number of half price ($92.50) scholarships are available to those who qualify for free/reduced meals at school. SHOOTING SPORTS The Sharpshooters will be starting their new year on January 14, 2016, at 7:00 pm at the Extension Office! Any 4-H er that is interested in joining the Sharpshooters for the first time are encouraged to attend this meeting! Keep in mind that in order to shoot in the spring, returning members will need to attend three indoor meetings, including one of the mandatory meetings in March and April. NEW members will need to attend three meetings, including the two mandatory meetings in March and April. If you have questions, please contact the office! TEEN LEADERSHIP CLUB Teens in the 8th-12th grades, come join us at our next meeting on January 25, 2016 at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office as we decide on a t-shirt fundraiser design! She now joins our other certified educators in offering the mandatory 4-H Horse Education Hours. Livestock News IMPORTANT INFORMATION! 3 MANDATORY LIVESTOCK MEETING The mandatory livestock meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Boone County Extension Enrichment Center (new building). This meeting does not count for educational hours but is mandatory to show a market animal and to participate in the Country Ham Project. A parent must attend the meeting with the 4-H member. 4-H VOLUNTEERS BECOME CERTIFIED LIVESTOCK LEADERS Two 4-H livestock volunteers attended a twoday training at General Butler State Park December 4-5, 2015 to become certified livestock leaders. Congratulations to Missy Alsip and Tonya Simpson! The premise behind the training is four-fold: to provide 4-H volunteer livestock leaders with a ready-made, completely assembled set of curricula, materials and educational resources necessary to conduct successful activities for 4-H club meetings and activities; to ensure a sound and well-rounded educational experience for youth enrolled in livestock projects; to provide an opportunity for volunteers to introduce quality assurance and ethics lessons to youth; to reduce the liability that volunteers may encounter when working with 4-H livestock volunteers who are following a prescribed and approved curriculum, and have been certified by the University of Kentucky to work with youth. VALIDATION SITE INFORMATION Beef Steers: Saturday, February 27, 2016, 8:00-11:00 am Pendleton County Fairgrounds Dairy Feeder Steers: Saturday, March 5, 2016, 11:00 am-noon Boone County Fairgrounds 4-H LIVESTOCK CLUB HAS MEETING ON EQUIPMENT SAFETY On Saturday, December 12, 2015, the Boone County 4-H Livestock Club met at Kinman Farms to learn about equipment safety. Dale Dobson from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture presented the program. Thirty-five members were present. A big thanks to Wayne Isaacs, Kim Kinman, and Gary Anderson for organizing the day. It was great. 4-H PLEDGE I pledge My HEAD to clearer thinking, My HEART to greater loyalty, My HANDS to larger service, My HEALTH to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world. When you say the 4-H pledge you are saying that you want to grow in: HEAD mentally, your knowledge and wisdom, HEART spiritually, your concern for and understanding of mankind, HANDS socially, your skills and service to others, HEALTH physically, your clean thoughts and sound body. 4 Project Club News WIGGLES AND WAGS DOG CLUB The next Dog Club meeting will be held on January, 19, 2016 at 7:00pm at the Extension Office! Come have fun and learn more about dogs, whether you own one, none, or many! KEEP CALM AND COOK ON GROUP This month we will be making breakfast wraps. Did you know scrambled eggs can be made in the microwave? The eggs cook quickly and you don t have to use the stovetop! You could surprise a family member with a home-cooked breakfast. If you weren t at the meeting, a recipe for these can be found by Googling UF 4-H microwave eggs. You can add any toppings you like. Breakfast is an important meal that should not be skipped. Want an even healthier egg? Buy the ones that are high in Omega-3! As the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states, breakfast provides energy to start your day, improves your concentration, and can help maintain a healthy weight. An easy and healthy New Year s resolution could be to simply eat breakfast! EXTREME ENTOMOLOGY Any 4-H er interested in learning more about entomology, join in on the fun! The first official meeting of the year will be January 11, 2016 at the Extension Office from 6:30-7:45 pm. If you have any questions, contact Diane Fritz at diane.fritz@kctcs.edu. CLOVER BUDS Our next meeting will be held on January 8, 2016 at 7:00pm at the Extension Office, so be sure to mark your calendars and be ready to have lots of fun! New members are welcome! PAWS AND CLAWS CAT CLUB At our December meeting, the 4-H Cat Club finished making cat blankets to donate. We had a gift exchange with a left/right story written by Sarah Huddleston. Everyone brought snacks to share. There were two five-week old kittens from Little Orphans Kitten Rescue who enjoyed being held and receiving attention from members. On January 13th we will work on workbook pages, finish coloring book pages, and make a plan of action for the next few meetings. PHOTO FRENZY Our November meeting was lots of fun as we were taught how to take pictures using a light box! Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 15th from 6-7:30.
