2 1 2 Lorem Ipsum Dolor [Issue]14, :: [Date] February 2013 Robo Bears Take Part In First Lego League Robotics Tournament On Saturday, November 10th the Robo Bears traveled to Cary, North Carolina to compete in the Local Qualifier for First Lego League Robotics Tournament. The Robo Bears team is comprised of students from four Public Schools. Based out of Ahoskie Elementary, the team includes members from the 4th and 5th grades, as well as members from Middle School, High School, Early College High School, and C. S. Brown High School. The Robo Bears met over the past two months to prepare for the 2012 First Lego League Senior Solutions Challenge. The team built and programmed a Lego Mindstorm robot to accomplish several missions relating to mobility loss and older adults. In addition, the team researched, wrote, and performed a presentation for the judges based on mobility issues, finding 2 innovative solutions, and fostering independent living among seniors. The First Lego League is a robotics program developed by FIRST Foundation to inspire and recognize science and technology. The program provides young people a chance to experience technology hands on through robotics engineering and a chance to solve real world problems. The Team also presented a demonstration at the December School Board meeting held at the Central Office Board Room. Several new teams will be starting in additional schools in the county in order to provide this opportunity to more students and to gain more practice and skills in preparation for next year s tournaments. So be on the lookout. Annual Dog Bowl is proud to announce its participation in the 1st Annual Dog Bowl on Friday, February 22nd at 630PM in Lillington, NC, hosted by Wake. We are excited to offer an opportunity for youth to represent at this fun, educational event. Two teams, one Junior (ages 9-12) and one Senior (ages 1318), will have a chance to show what they know about canine animal husbandry in a quiz bowl type setting. Wish us luck. Woof! Also, PAWS of is sponsoring our teams with tee shirts and a hands-on educational day at their shelter. We would like to give a special shout out to PAWS to honor the excellent work that they do for our homeless and abandoned four-legged friends in the county. 3

Want to go to an outdoor movie, ice-skating, enjoy a bonfire, dancing, and attend interactive workshops? Are you between the ages of 13-18? Then Teen Retreat is the event for you. The event will be held on March 8-10 in Greenville, NC. Cost $85. Registration deadline is Thursday, February 21 st by 5pm. Teen Leadership Meeting: Our next Teen Leadership Meeting will be held on Monday, February 25 th from 3:15pm to 4:15pm at Middle School. Open to all teens ages Come on down and hear the latest about the best program around! We will also meet on Monday, March 11 th at High School. Teen Leaders meet on the 2 nd Monday every month at HCHS and the 4 th Monday of every month at HCMS. See ya there and bring a friend. Advisory Council: If you are interested in serving on the Advisory Council, please come to our upcoming meeting on Monday, February 25 th at 5:30pm. As we finalize our plans for the 2013 program year, we would love to get your input, hear your feedback, and chat about the future of in. Volunteer Leader s Meeting: Want to be a Volunteer Leader? While there are many types of presentations, materials concentrate on these four: demonstrations, illustrated talks, public speeches, and impromptu speeches. List of topics is available upon request. Ages 5-18 (as of January 1st). There are cash prizes for the winners! The final draft of the presentation script is due by Friday, March 1st by 5pm. Presentation practice will be held at the Extension Office in Winton from 3:30pm to 5:30pm on Wednesday, March 6th, Wednesday, March 13th, and Wednesday, March 20th. Open to ages The Livestock Committee meets on the first Monday of every month at the Murfreesboro Town Hall at 7pm. The 2013 Livestock Show and Sale will be held on Wednesday, June 12th at the Livestock Arena in Murfreesboro. Reading and Robotics Coaches Needed is looking for local high school students, college students, church, and community members to serve as mentors for students at three county elementary schools. A great way to give back is to serve! Reading coaches conduct literacy activities in K-6 classrooms. All books, lessons, and materials will be provided. No teaching experience necessary, just a love of books! Robotics coaches work with 5th and 6th grade students to help them build and program a Lego Mind storm Robot. Hold this date for the most fun day of the year, the May Day Bike and Bike Rodeo! Bring your walking shoes, or bike and helmet, and come on down to Winton for this healthy, all age, family friendly event. Entry Fee is $10 per individual, $20 per family. The funds raised during this event will go to the scholarship fund, which helps send kids to camp, keep program fees low, and assists in providing unique leadership opportunities to the ers that we serve.
