Let us gather, as we draw closer to the Longest Night, in quiet song, peaceful prayer, and silent medita on. Let's come together in a though ul and medita ve service that meets us where we are not where everyone says we should be. Each Vespers includes newly published works as well as scores by prominent Bay Area composers. Several of this year's offerings had recently been published. 4 Many thanks to everyone who contributed to Our Fellowship Potluck last Sunday. In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Brother HENRY "HANK" VAN DYKE, JR. December 17, 1941 to November 21, 2018 Hank had a smile that could light up the world. He was a civil engineer, a great storyteller, a loving father to his two sons and loving husband to two wives. He was a runner and cyclist who ran the Dipsea Race eight mes, including three Double Dipseas. He ran several marathons and competed in many 100 mile cycling events. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. He loved tales of the Old West and claimed an "inner cowboy." He wore his cowboy hat and his Yankees hat with pride. He will be remembered for his open and generous manner to all, his love of life and his pride in his sons and joy in his young grandson. He was born in Ridgewood, NJ. A er gradua ng from Ridgewood High School in 1959, he went on to Lafaye e College in Easton, PA, gradua ng in 1964 with a BS in Civil Engineering. He was recruited for the California State Water Project and headed West at once. He was proud of his part in the California Aqueduct and boasted that it could be seen from space. He married his high school sweetheart, Gail Cook, and moved to Marin County, living in San Anselmo for 42 years where they raised their two sons, Adam and Nathan. Gail was a celebrated sculptor whose works can be seen at the Gail Van Dyke Atrium Gallery at the Marin Cancer Center. Gail passed away in 2008.

5 He went next to the City of Mar nez then became City Engineer for Mill Valley, followed by posts at the City of Agoura Hills, and management posi ons. His "project of a life me" was as City Engineer/Public Works Director for the City of Emeryville for nearly 15 years, during which me that city underwent major redevelopment and urban renewal. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly five years, Mary Gilanfarr Van Dyke, sons Adam (Corinne) and Nathan, grandson Logan, his sister Ann Van Dyke and her family in New Jersey, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A Celebra on of Life is planned for December 15 at 1:00 PM at SPC. In lieu of flowers, dona ons may be made to the Pastor's Discre onary Fund, or to the SF Marin Food Bank, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Wednesday Community Lunch Program

6 December 2018 It's December and again it is the quarterly request by the Community Lunch Program to solicit volunteers to donate a half gallon each of juice and whole milk to be shared with the luncheon guests. In addi on, we are adding hard boiled eggs to our dona on request. The eggs are not only extremely popular with our guests, but very nutri ous and it also enables them to have a take away item. Please bring these items to SPC by 11:30 AM on Wednesday or leave them in the refrigerator at church the previous Sunday and mark them "Wednesday Lunch." Chef Mike Bromham heads the kitchen and has the luncheon program very well organized so everything is set up, served and done within 1 1/2 hours. If you could spare an hour or so just once a month, it would be sincerely appreciated if you could give a hand (nothing strenuous). The Community Lunch volunteers are a very congenial group and it would be wonderful to have Sausalito Presbyterian Church volunteers work with them. Please understand that the lunch is extremely important to approximately 25 people each week. They are here because of a lack of funds to afford meals or have no means to prepare food for themselves. At SPC they are served a hot, nutri ous meal. In some cases, it's their only meal of the day. And at this me of the year, it is even more important to them. Please think about taking a few minutes of your me in December to help those less fortunate and who really appreciate it. If you can donate items or volunteer for December 5, 12, 19, 26, contact me, Flora Sommers at or faasommers@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you. 7 our REFRESHED and REFRESHING site at sausalitopres.org GREAT THANKS to ROBIN SINCLAIR for being our Webmaster! She makes it possible for people around the corner and around the earth to share in the life of SPC! It has been said that events are posted even before they are over! Thank You, Robin!! SPC OFFERS FREE HUGS Sharing the love... What would be be er than ge ng a hug on Elec on Day? Winnie Huff Bea y, Beth Milwid, and Pastor Paul spent a couple hours on November 6 in downtown San Rafael offering friendly hugs to everyone who passed by. So many people accepted! In fact, the first hug came from a young man who just passed our huggers on the sidewalk while they were s ll traveling to the plaza, threw open his arms upon reading our signs and said, "Okay!" Many passersby wanted a hug from each one of our SPC Huggers. Some asked who we were "with;" some asked "why" we were doing it. "Because it's sunny!" was one of Winnie's Random Reasons Why to Hug. Beth, Pastor Paul and Winnie make their inten ons known... A few people took photos or videos of us, and several said we had made their day, or had inspired them. One guy got his hugs and le, only to show up 15 minutes later with delicious cookies for our huggers! The eldest hugger declared himself to be "pushing 90!" The youngest were probably the many teenagers who were eager huggers. It was a great day! Heartwarming and inspiring and sending waves of good will throughout the town as people passed by. Keep your eye on SPINN for our next Free Hugs Day! And don't forget to hug someone today!

14 How Can We Help The raging wild fires in Northern and Southern California are staggering. The Camp fire is the most devasta ng fire in the state's history. Where, when and how can we even begin to help? The Dona ons Commi ee has met and will be making a recommenda on to the SWC Board and the membership for a dona on from the SWC, but the commi ee also has a few recommenda ons on how we can help now as individuals: 1. North Valley Community Founda on in Chico monetary dona ons to the NVCF Camp Fire fund are being accumulated to address the needs of temporary shelter, clothing, food as well as long term solu ons. 2. Bu e Humane Society you can make a monetary dona on or you can take needed items to the Sausalito Cruising Club where there is a barrel for cat & dog food, animal toys, leashes & harnesses, li er, food & water dishes, animal carriers. 3. Caring Choices of Chico originally an AIDS organiza on, it has set up a separate fund for medical needs for the affected people. 4. Lisa Benne e of IndivisibleSausalito has developed a list of basic items that people in the affected areas need now on Amazon. You can go to Amazon, order the items you wish to donate and they will be shipped to a woman with CD4 Indivisible Network in Roseville who will consolidate the items and deliver them to specified drop off loca ons, shelters and individuals in the affected area. The recovery of this area will be a marathon, not a sprint. Housing is probably the most cri cal issue for the people of Paradise, Magalia and other towns in the area that have been ravaged. As winter approaches people will need places to live, places to recover and make plans for a future. Help will be needed for a long me to come. Our hearts go out to the people of the North Valley. Your Dona ons Commi ee. Light your home and our world with Clean Energy! Last Friday, 13 federal agencies issued a sobering scien fic report warning of more

15 wildfires, increased asthma, crop failures, and a shrinking economy if we con nue to burn fossil fuels at the current rate. This report underscores the urgency to end our country's dependence on fossil fuels and build a clean energy future. Interfaith Power & Light network reaches 22,000 houses of worship and more than seven million Americans, providing congrega ons with the tools and resources go solar, to preach sermons on Crea on care, and to stand in defense of our home, the earth. Working together, people of faith can make an incredible impact. We already have the knowledge and the technology to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. We just need the poli cal will to do so. Decardonaza on if the answer. This is the first and easiest step.
