Vote Canvassing Thursday Dec. 11 LWV Monthly Unit Meeting Calling all League members and friends to come to the October Unit meeting at the new Advanced Learning Library! If you have not been to the new Learning Center, you are in for a pleasant surprise. In addition, we are trying something new this year new place, new agenda, new time. The doors will open at 5:00 pm, meeting will begin at 5:30 pm and program at 6:00 pm. There will be NO MEAL, thus no cost. You are welcome to brown bag it if you want. The program will be on foster care, adoption and privatization in Kansas. The State Study this year is a revisit of our position on this issue. There will be a panel of four people from the St. Francis Community Services which currently has the contract for foster care in the state of Kansas. This should be a good program and discussion of the situation as it was and as it is. Again, plan to come, bring your supper while it is still light outside, and be part of an issue currently in the news and being studied by the League. Our studies lead to action, but you must be informed before action can be taken! NO RSVP AND NO COST! EARLY ENOUGH TO EVEN ATTEND SOMETHING ELSE IF YOU ARE REALLY BUSY! 2 Tuesday Topics Notes from September: School Vouchers Last week s Tuesday Topics presented Bishop Wade Moore of the Urban Preparatory Academy and Erin Gould of Game On for Kansas Schools discussing the pros and cons of private school vouchers and tax credits. It was an informative and lively presentation. Tuesday Topics, co-sponsored by LWV and the Wichita Library are always worthwhile, well done, just an hour long, and not to be missed! Green Space vs. Private Development Tuesday, Oct. 23, Noon-1 pm Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. 2 nd St. The competing interest of public green space vs. private development is nothing new. Joni Mitchell's song "Big Yellow Taxi" summed it up: "...Paved paradise and put up a parking lot." In times of economic downturn, how important is it to keep and maintain City park facilities when developers are willing to purchase for the land for private development? Are the two compatible? And how should the leaders decide when the two come into conflict? Park Director Troy Houtman and Assistant City Manager Scot Rigby will join us for this discussion on how Wichita balances its economic interests with the need for open green spaces. Doors open at 11:30 am for those who want to bring a lunch Election Analysis Tuesday, Nov. 27, Noon-1 pm Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. 2 nd St. Join us as Dr. Russell Fox from Friends University discusses the outcomes from this year's election. What might voters expect to see in the coming months at the local, state and federal level? This program is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters Wichita-Metro. Doors open at 11:30 for those who want to bring a lunch or purchase one from Reverie Roasters. NEED TO GET ORGANIZED? To purchase yours, contact Martha Pint at (316) or martha_pint@hotmail.com. BOARD REPORTS Voter Service Report As we anticipated, September was a very busy month. The League attended 12 voter registration / training / speaking events. We had a total of 80.5 volunteer hours, talked with approximately 800 people, and helped 143 voters register, change their names or addresses, or request advance ballots. A huge thank you to all of you that volunteered. We have until October 16 th to register people before the General Election on November 6 th. As we have worked with people this past month, we have found that it is very important for all of us to check our voter registration at KSVotes.org or with the Election Office. We have had a few people that said they even voted in the primary that were not showing up as registered. In October we have five additional voter registration events scheduled and two candidate forums. We will continue our efforts to get out the vote on Election Day. Carole A. Neal, Chair

Treasurer s Report Dues Reminder: Our League s dues fund our local Voter Service and Advocacy work. Also, they help fund the work of LWV Kansas and LWVUS. This year our dues are $65 a year.

We welcome new members Kiana Knolland, Anne Nelson, Sue Wine and Pat Jones. We have 97 paid members at this time! Thanks to all who have renewed so far.

We have a special student rate this year, $10 a year. A second member in a household s dues are $32.50 a year. Our dues year began July 1 so dues for July 1, 2018 June 30, 2019 are now due. Donations to our LWV Wichita-Metro s regular operations are always welcome they aren t taxdeductible, but they do help the league! If you want to make a donation that is tax-deductible you can donate to our LWV Wichita-Metro Education and Scholarship Fund. Be sure to designate Ed. Fund on your check. Designating LWV Wichita Metro Ed. Fund is enough if you want the funds to go to our ordinary education work. If you want your donation to go to our 100 th Anniversary work please note Ed. Consider this a one-day break, full of useful tips and information to get us all through the busy 2018 election season. As host League, we would like to have a good turnout of our members, so please attend if at all possible. Registration is $40 and includes continental breakfast and lunch.
