1 The August 2017 Hearthstone Herald Dear Homemakers, A newsletter for Extension Homemakers of Hancock County, Indiana Hope this note finds you well! My family and I got to see the total eclipse at my in-laws place this past week, it was so amazing and nothing like the partial eclipse. It was a beautiful sight! There will be another total eclipse this century across the United States in 7 years, April 2024, and it will go right across Indiana! I am sure there will be many, many visitors during that time too. We ve already extended the invitation to all our out-of-state relatives and they are planning on coming! Thank you to everyone who came to the county lesson on Nourish the Brain and Play!. Pat McCartney, my husband who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2014, stepped in last minute to teach on the first topic and Debbi Green had a great lesson she created on the importance of children s play and how we can be instrumental in that for kids, even if we don t have any living with us now. I am very grateful to these teachers who gave of their time and talents. The evening was encouraging and inspiring with it being graciously hosted by U&I with delicious refreshments. We had 29 people come and it was a nice time! Our next county lesson will be Thursday September 21st, 1-3pm and it will be on Meal Prep without the Chef and The Amazing Health Benefits of Beet Juice!. The registration form is in this newsletter. It s fun to meet our mission with educational opportunities where we can bring and meet friends! Hope to see you there! We received a lot of pop tabs and some pinafores for Riley last month, thank you so much! Please save up your pop tabs in plastic bags as it is difficult to pour them into the collection bin using a milk jug. If you have any printer cartridges (not generic), the Ag Association is collecting them and we can help them out; bring them to the extension office. Also, in preparation for the Make a Difference Day county project of making lap quilts for central Indiana foster kids, please consider donating fabric for the project (cotton and fleece) as you go through closets, find deals at garage sales or store sales. Thank you for being on the lookout, you can bring them to the council meeting or drop them off to the extension office. Please let me know if you have any questions about patterns or what Riley Ronald McDonald House collects and how we Homemakers help them with our projects. The ICAN project is in full swing and is on the calendar and being promoted in the county; we are partnering with Love Inc. with 4 classes held at Calvary Baptist on Tuesday evenings in November gearing up for the holidays. ICAN is a great way that we can be an educational hub and resource for our community. Please find Deb Sweet s article and the ICAN flyer for more information. Baker s Best hosted by Ahwenasha is coming up September 30th at the extension office. Peach is the theme for this year. The information on the rules can be found on the Riley Festival website: Entries accepted from 9-10am and open judging begins 10:15am. The Home Arts and Quilt Show information can be found: Volunteers are very needed and appreciated. Thank you for your help in making a great show and experience for the community. Hopefully, I ll get some projects finished and turned in, it s a good motivator to get them done! I m working on them. The Pie Booth supports our scholarship fund. It s a booth that is a tradition for many to support our organization and enjoy delicious pies at the same time! President's council passed a motion to raise the small pies to $5 and the large pies to $10. 2 Recipes of the Month Pork Chop Dinner Submitted by Nancy Tritch Heat oven to Pork Chops 1 can Apple Pie Filling 1 box Stove Top Dressing cooked Layer pie filling on bottom, then pork chops, add dressing on top. Bake covered with foil for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake 10 more minutes. 8 I CAN I am so excited to let you all know the I CAN program is in full swing. I am currently working on a mini grant through Hancock Community Foundation. We are going to be teaching 5 lessons in 4 weeks. See the flyer for information on which class will be taking place on what Tuesday. These will be Tuesdays in November from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Each class the participants will have things they take away with them. The sewing group will be making tea towels with Christmas Trees on them. They will give everyone who participates a small sewing kit to take and they will take their own tea towel away with them. The sewing ladies will also be giving tips on homemade cleaners and stain treaters and each participant will take away a homemade cleaner and some recipes for homemade cleaners. The Budget/ Finance lesson will be taught by Love INC. We will be giving away planners/ledgers. The next week the cooking group will be sharing how to buy Pork Loin cheap and make 5 different meals with it. They will take home a meal, try a meal and will even learn how to make a dessert from items you generally have on hand. And lastly the Craft for Christmas will be making a wooden picture holder. We will be using materials that people often have on hand, or you can make from recycled materials. We do ask that you share this with everyone! Ladies, gentlemen, and teens (13 and older) to attend the classes. Love Inc. will be providing child care for us, so all ages are welcome! If you would like to help out at the classes please let us know. The I CAN committee of ladies has been an absolute joy to work with. All of these ladies have wonderful ideas and are pouring their hearts into this project. I can t wait to show our community what our county of Extension Homemakers is all about. 10 Many Thanks! I wanted to thank all of you for sending me to Home and Family Conference this year. I learned so much, met some wonderful women and look forward to serving all of you. I was blessed to be a part of the Membership Focus Committee this past year and worked with amazing women there as well. This year I was able to be a part of The Membership Session. We gave out lots of information on membership. In fact, 100 ways to boost membership. Also at this session we passed out books (by district) with all of the Magic of Membership stories inside. If you get the opportunity to get your hands on one of these books, I encourage you to read these stories. While at Conference Lais and I learned about a new program called I Can. We are very excited to bring this program to Hancock County. Last month s newsletter highlighted this program. We welcome any ideas or help that anyone wants to give. 12 Club News AHWENASHA EXTENSION HOMEMAKERS CLUB The Club no one can pronounce on the first try that is our Club! Ahwenasha! We were sponsored by the Friendly Neighbors Club way back in March of At that time a member had a friend who new American Indian and suggested the name Ahwenasha which means Happy Teepee or Home so that became our name. Over the years our membership has gone up and down many times, but we all believe in the future and its promises. When I first joined the club, it was comprised of women from every social economic group and age, that hasn t changed! I personally enjoy having a broad cross representation in our club. Once, most of our members lived in Sugar Creek Township. That has changed, now we live in Center and Vernon Townships and have 2 members from Indianapolis. What a group of wonderful women!! We love to have lessons on crafts and foods, but we enjoy all the lessons presented. We do a lot of lessons that have a special meaning to members of the club. We are also very committed to giving back to the community. We support Royal Family Kids Camp, food pantries and are members of the Riley Cheer Guild. We support the State and District projects and give when we can to help make life better for others. Ahwenasha, has had many committee chairs for the county and county, district and State officers over the years. I was the first State President from our club, and hope someone will follow in my footsteps in the future. Though many of us are now the older members of our club, we love it when the younger women bring their children! It helps us remember how it was when we first joined and needed to bring our young children. At one time we were the only club in the county who had a man as a member. One of our dear members had an adult son who was blind and enjoyed coming with her to meetings. We loved being able to say he was an active member of our club making items for the bazaar every year. Members come and go, but one thing has never changed our belief in the value of the HOME! Linda Lowe
