Pillai PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Respected members of UAK After the stormy and Tsunamic 2016, we are slowly moving on to a more pleasant, warm and prosperous New Year Let us utilize this year to take our society a fathom ahead both academically and financially. It is gratifying to note that the Council of USI accepted our proposal for conduct of USICON 2020 (hosts, venue, organising chairman and organising secretary), duly ratified in their AGM. The Hon. Secretary is working hard to organise a fruitful theme oriented academic program for the forthcoming UAK Midterm Conference at Thiruvananthapuram in April The Hon. Treasurer has been successful to financially enrich the corpus of UAK, with healthy contributions from SZUSICON 2014, Lithocon and Pearlcon. The bank accounts of all these conferences have been closed, after properly auditing the accounts. The arrangements for UAKON 2017 have also kick-started. The Editorial Secretary is updating the Website and is in the process of publishing a Handbook cum Directory for our society. The Ex-officio and the Executive Committee members have been instrumental in conducting various academic programs for post graduate students, a well appreciated initiative of UAK. The one conducted recently at Kottayam by Prof. Suresh Bhat & Co was very well appreciated by the attendees. UAK will soon be self-supporting such academic programs for its members. UAK also plans to have joint academic ventures with ASU, which will go a long way in the coordinated functioning of both these bodies. Intercollegiate Quiz Competition (Quiz-O-Mania) and ASU-UAK PG Academic Fellowship programs will kick off soon, academically supported by IPCA and Dr.Reddy s Lab respectively. Many members have put in their views and ideas to the officers of the association regarding various other activities for our society. Overall, the future of UAK looks healthy. Let us all partake in this progressive movement. As it has always been my mission to strengthen the foundation of any organisation wherein I worked, I am in the process of compiling the historical data of UAK, which have been missing in the office. Details of previous office bearers, conferences, award winners, orators, quiz masters etc have been collected, with kind inputs from many members. The guidelines which are more than 12 years have been revised and sent for scrutiny initially by the Executive Committee and subsequently will be sent to all members for their comments. The Constitution, which is more than 30 years old, need revision, to suit the current day functioning of any society. It is sad to understand that the documents for the period , including Constitution Amendments adopted so far have not been filed with the Registrar of Societies. Somehow, we had been lax to keep the records of our society and file them appropriately with the authorities. Needless to say that the functioning of our society is supervised by the regulatory authorities and we can implement reforms and amendments only with their concurrence. Those among you who attended the AGM of USI at Mumbai will understand the difficulties faced by USI for not complying with these statutory requirements. I was proud to streamline the activities of ASU and Kochi Urology Club during my tenure in these bodies. I assure that I shall keep my promise to fill up all the lacunae in the statutory functioning of UAK too. This exercise is all the more relevant, since ASU was recently called in by the Registrar of Societies, Chennai to physically verify all the records. It was understood that more than 19,000 societies were dismissed by the Registrar Office at Chennai for not properly maintaining the records!! I earnestly need your support and healthy criticism to fulfil my promises. It is hearty to note that many local clubs have started properly registering their organisations and acquiring statutory statuses, in response to my request to do so. Hope 2017 brings back the sweet comraderies amongst our members, often envied by others. Let us have a healthy organisation with sound base and infrastructure. 2 Message from Editorial Secretary Warm greetings to all from Kochi. At the outset let me wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year. Many of us would have had a fruitful academic session at the golden jubilee conference of USI at Mumbai. The live concert by Shankar Mahadevan was mind blowing. I would like to congratulate all our members who won accolades at the national conference. We also have our midterm workshop coming up at Trivandrum. I would like to gently remind our members about their suggestions for our website and to send me their updated address and contact details. Looking forward to see you all at Trivandrum. 5 UAK - POST GRADUATE ACADEMIC PROGRAM (Report by Dr.H.Krishna Moorthy, Kochi) Urological Association of Kerala has been conducting Academic Program for post graduate students (MCh and DNB in Urology) in various zones of Kerala since the last one year. 3 such programs were conducted at Kochi, one at Kozhikode and the recent one was conducted at Kottayam on 8th January The program was organised by Prof.Suresh Bhat (Organising Chairman), Dr.Frederick Paul (Organising Secretary) and the team from Department of Urology, Govt. Medical College, Kottayam. The faculty included Prof. Appu Thomas, Prof. A.Mohan, Prof. Antory Devasia, Prof. Venugopal G, Prof. Felix Cardoza, Prof. Nazar M and Dr.H.Krishna Moorthy. The program was inaugurated by Prof. Appu Thomas in a short and befitting inaugural ceremony. Dr.H.Krishna Moorthy, President of UAK appraised the participants regarding the various academic programs initiated by UAK. 50 post graduate students from various teaching institutions across Kerala participated in this program. It has always been the policy of UAK not to charge registration fee from the students who attend these academic programs. However the program was academically supported by CIPLA and Dr. Reddy s Laboratories. There were case discussions, guest lectures and other programs beneficial to the trainees. There was healthy interaction among the students and the teachers. The program was well organised, appreciated and the feed back from the students indicated that such programs were very useful for them in preparation for their examinations

6 LOCAL NEWS Free Medical Camp by Kochi Urology Club Kochi Urology Club organized a free Medical Camp at Govt Hospital, Angamaly on 18 December 2016, initiated by President, Dr.Sanel Varghese. Free medical services were provided to nearly 70 patients with various Urological illnesses. Free medications were distributed to the needy by M/s. CIPLA during the camp. The hospital authorities and the local Panchayat administration were very cordial in providing the necessary infrastructure and facilities for the successful conduct of this camp. The patients were advised to have follow up at the same hospital or any nearby hospitals and were assured of further treatment. The noble gesture of KUC was lauded by the hospital staff and the patients alike.
