It's Fair'ly Important News from the Fair Office May 31, 2017 P.O. Box 1024, 701 S. Lincoln Ave. Alma, MI Fore! Help Support the Fair While Golfing Sign up for the 2017 Gratiot County Fair for Youth Firecracker Open Golf Outing. The outing will be on Thursday, June 15 at the Fields Golf Course in Ithaca and proceeds will go to help cover the cost of the annual fireworks show on the last Saturday of the fair. The fair has a goal to make this your most fun round of golf you ever play. You do not want to miss this. Registration is $240 for a team of 4 or $60 for an individual. Golfing will be best ball over 18 holes and includes a cart. Golfers will receive some great swag which includes your only opportunity to snag authentic GCFFY logo golf balls, lunch and dinner. Sign up by Tuesday, June 6 to ensure we have a cart for you. Following the golf outing we will have dinner and our annual road sign auction. Registration forms and more details can be found at or by calling the fair office at or ing bgardner@gcffy.org. You Are Invited to the Annual GCFFY Road Sign Auction See your name on one of GCFFY s roads by bidding on a road at the fair s annual road sign auction. The auction will follow our complimentary post golf outing dinner on Thursday, June 15 at 5:00 p.m. at the Fields Golf Course s Cart House. In the past signs have started around $250 and the proceeds help the fair to maintain and grow its buildings and facilities. Each intersection of the road purchased for the week of the fair will have your name on the sign by the intersection as well as all post auction fair week maps. Please contact the fair office at or ing bgardner@gcffy.org by Tuesday, June 6 to reserve your spot at dinner or to place a bid if you will be unable to join us. Saddle Up and Get a Team for the GCFFY Donkey Bash
The Donkey Bash is returning to GCFFY! After a ten year absence the fair has contracted to provide fair goers the opportunity to watch and even participate in the 2017 Donkey Bash on Monday, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the fair s Horse Arena. Only ten teams can participate and registration is now open. Teams will pool their entry fees together and the winning team will earn money for the non-profit of their choice. Teams will consist of five riders. Each team will find a sponsor to put up the team s $250 entry fee. The entry fee will go into the race s purse to be distributed to the non-profit organizations the top three teams designate. Sign up today and be sure to mark your calendars so you will not miss watching the fun. Registration forms and more information can be found at Fair Entry Forms Due 4:00 p.m., Monday, June 26 What one thing does every GCFFY Exhibitor have in common? They will have all completed their Fair Entry Form and have turned it into the fair office. Completed and signed forms (along with the release form attached) are due June 25 but since that day is a Sunday, the deadline is extended to the following business day making them due at 4:00 p.m., Monday, June 26 at the Fair Office on the fairgrounds or at the 4-H/MSU Extension Office just south of the Alma Post Office. Forms can be hand delivered, mailed or ed to info@gcffy.org. Fair classes are found in the fair book and entry forms are available at Anyone wanting additional information or help on completing the Fair Entry Form can click on Who Does Not Need to Complete a Fair Entry Form? Exhibitors participating in only horses or 4-H Archery do not need to register on a Fair Entry Form. In fact, there are no classes in the Fair Book to sign up under these classes. These exhibitors will need to complete a Liability Release Form (which is available as the last page of the fair entry form). If these exhibitors are interested in showing anything else such as a pie or a rabbit, they then must compete the Fair Entry Form. Exhibitors who have preregistered your market beef, feeder beef, goat, sheep or swine project still MUST complete the Fair Entry Form. It is on this form where exhibitors will register for classes they will be exhibiting in at the fair such as their project animal s market class, showmanship, record book, skillathon, etc. Any questions, please contact the fair office at or info@gcffy.org. Open Exhibitors Pay a $15 Registration Fee For the second year, exhibitors who are not currently enrolled and in good standing in a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter must pay a $15 registration fee to register for the fair. This fee helps cover the costs needed to supply these exhibitors with their entry tags and additional information they will need to be successful which is typically sent to club leaders and chapter advisors. This fee is payable to GCFFY and due when forms are turned into the office.
GCFFY Donors Help to Create a Great Fair Gratiot County Fair for Youth would not be the incredible fair it is without the investment the community gives to us through donations of time, talent and resources. Each and every donor is special to us and truly helps GCFFY provide the great fair experience we do and to remain a sustainable fair organization. Click here for a list of annual GCFFY donors to date. If you would like your name on this list or if your name was missed, please contact the fair office at or bgardner@gcffy.org. Expanded Seasonal Office Hours serve our public. The Fair Office housed in the Bill & Grace Vanderbeek Fair Office Building in the center of the fairgrounds is now open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These hours will remain until mid-august and will help GCFFY better accommodate the demands of the pre-fair season. During the week of the fair the office will remain open from 8:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. and will no longer close during suppertime to better Rural Urban Days Comes to Town at GCFFY This year s Rural Urban Day event will occur on Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Gratiot County Fair for Youth's fairgrounds. This year will be Rural Urban Day s 42 nd Anniversary! Rural Urban Day continues to be a successful fundraiser for the Gratiot Community. Last year, 1,200 people came together to celebrate the inherent bond that exists between the rural and urban communities in Gratiot County. All profits from Rural Urban Day are reinvested in the community to further benefit Gratiot County. Additionally, Rural Urban Day is an event that is fun for the entire family. As of last year, Rural Urban Day now offers a tractor show and petting zoo. Traditions of the past will also continue: awards to Farm Family of the Year and Agribusiness of the Year, a steak fry with all of the delicious sides, and a community picnic where friends old and new come together. There will also be a golf outing the morning of Rural Urban Day at The Fields Golf Course in Ithaca (call Jessica Godley at for more information). Proceeds from the golf outing will go toward scholarships for FFA students attending the National Washington Leadership Convention! If you are interested in attending this event, please contact the Chamber at (989) to purchase tickets. Tickets are $10 if purchased in advance and $15 at the gate. Tickets for hot dogs will be available at the gate for $5. Kid s Day Exploration Tent Booth Space Available On Thursday, August 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., local businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in the Kid s Day Exploration Tent at Gratiot County Fair for Youth. Each year, Kid s Day booths educate nearly 400 youth and families on a variety of interactive topics. This may be through hands-on activities, videos, handouts, games, etc. GCFFY is open to creative approaches and want to work with groups to
explore new ideas. To expand on this success, organizations and businesses are invited to participate. Booths are set up underneath a tent or outside, depending on the needs. Mark your calendar and send GCFFY your registration form by July 14. Click the link for a registration form and additional information. GCFFY Hosts Farm Bureau Youth Farm Safety Day Every exhibitor who shows animals at the fair is more or less considered a farmer. Everyone can gain valuable information and still have loads of fun participating in the second Youth Farm Safety Day which is held right here at Gratiot County Fair for Youth. The event will be Monday, July 10 from 9:30 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. Activities will be appropriate for all youngsters between the ages of 5 and 19 and the cost of $5 is a bargain as it includes a t-shirt and lunch. Topics will revolve around animal safety and equipment safety. Registration forms can be found at and are due June 5 to the Gratiot County Farm Bureau Office in Ithaca. Two Exhibitors Earn The Gratiot County Community Foundation's GCFFY Memorial Scholarship About six years ago a group of fair leaders met with Gratiot County Community Foundation to create an endowed scholarship fund to support and recognize outstanding GCFFY exhibitors with a scholarship. The scholarship recipient must be a graduating senior or someone completing their first year of college and exhibit excellence in leadership and service. This year, the GCFFY Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded two scholarships to Andrea Gallagher and Avery Wood out of a large pool of very qualified candidates. Andrea Gallagher has been exhibiting at GCFFY her whole life. During her time as an exhibitor she has given back to the fair as a volunteer every year at the River Rock Barn. She also is an incredible help to younger exhibitors and is serving as president of the Somethin Special 4-H Club. She writes, As I aged and progressed through the age divisions, younger exhibitors started to look to me for help and guidance with their projects. Some simply needed help finding a certain place on the fairgrounds, others needed help trimming their feeder steers or learning the positions of showmanship. Andrea is graduated both from Carson City-Crystal High School and from Montcalm Community College this spring. Look for Andrea in
the Feeder barn and showing exhibits at the fair and at Ferris State University in the fall where she plans to pursue a career in medicine. Avery Wood is graduating from Ithaca High School this spring and has been a member of the Kidz-N-Kritterz 4-H Club since she was nine. Avery has excelled in the swine project area but has taken many other projects over the years including still exhibits, goats, rabbits, poultry and dairy. Avery has served as a camp counselor at the Gratiot County 4-H Cloverbud Day for the last two years where she has helped young 4-H ers experience different projects. With her 4-H club she helps to participate in service projects which include helping to use her crafting skills to provide cards and gifts to local Meals on Wheels recipients. Avery plans to study to become a dental hygienist at Ferris State University. GCFFY Plans Fair Clean UP Days Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 19, Sunday, July 23 and Wednesday, July 26 to help GCFFY get their grounds ready for the fair and Sunday, August 6 to help GCFFY put everything away. Pre-fair clean ups start around 5:30 p.m. and each club leaders will be sent a list of projects which the fair asks their 4-H Club or FFA Chapter do as a club and to help clubs know what they can do to make the most out of fair setup and clean-up. The post fair clean-up starts early on Sunday morning. Maple Leaf Amusements are Coming Back to GCFFY Gratiot County Fair for Youth and Maple Leaf Amusements will again team up to provide an exceptional midway experience during the week of the fair. Maple Leaf Amusements has a great assortment of rides which will include their Super Wheel, Himalaya, Crazy Surf and many others which will be returning. Every year though Maple Leaf brings in new rides and this year they plan to bring in the ever popular Sea Dragon. Along with the fun carnival Maple Leaf brings in exciting games and the most amazing fair food. Can t you just taste and smell those elephant ears, polish sausage and caramel apples? Don t forget to plan your visit to this family friendly fair midway. Plan to Get Your GCFFY On With Pre-Sale Carnival Wrist Bands Again this year, GCFFY will be selling pre-sale carnival tickets at an amazingly great price. For just $10 you can purchase a ticket which can be redeemed for an unlimited ride daily wristband any day you choose that Maple Leaf is open during the fair. Tickets will be sold at the fair office during office hours. The weeks prior to the fair the fair office will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additionally the fair office will be open until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26. Furthermore the fair office will be open on Saturday, July 29 from 9:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 30 from 12:30 p.m. through 3:00 p.m. Stop by and see us to get your ride passes, parking permits and get ready to get your GCFFY On! Fair Staff Expands During Busy Season
To help ensure our fair serves our community well, GCFFY hires additional help throughout during the busy prefair season. This past month GCFFY welcomed back Lance Fowler in the role of GCFFY Intern. Lance who recently graduated from Central Michigan University has been our intern since Prior to being an intern, Lance was an exhibitor and a Teen Representative on the GCFFY Board of Directors. Emily Maslovich is also an intern in the fair office this year. Emily has completed her first year at University of Detroit Mercy and has served as a GCFFY Teen Representative for the past two years where she volunteered many hours in the fair office. Lance & Emily are welcome additions to the fair office. When you see the fairgrounds looking like it is ready for a black tie event, thank our groundkeeper, Phil Lombard. Phil is joining us again for his third year maintaining our grounds and making sure we are looking good. Phil and his wife Kathy constantly find ways to make our grounds look better and GCFFY is very thankful to welcome them back to Alma for the summer. Save the Date for Weaver Livestock Clinic Gratiot County Fair for Youth will host a Weaver Livestock Clinic presented by TSC of Ithaca and Gratiot County 4-H on Tuesday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m. The clinic will cover fitting and showing of Beef, Feeder Beef, Goats, Sheep and Swine. Lots of samples will be used and given away. Complete details will be coming but in the meantime, please save the date. Plan to Attend GCFFY Livestock Sale Mark your calendars for Friday, August 4 for the 2017 GCFFY Market Livestock Sale. This is a great way to support youth exhibitors who are learning about raising quality livestock projects and to fill your freezer with farm fresh local meat. The official 2017 sale order will be Goats, Rabbits, Poultry, Swine, Sheep, Beef, Dairy Milk and Feeder Beef. Champion crop projects will be mixed in between large animal species. Market Swine Weights Changed for 2017 GCFFY s Board of Directors changed the weights for market swine projects beginning with the 2017 fair. Swine must weigh between 220 lbs. and 320 lbs. to be able to show in market class and sell. Exhibitors are encouraged to figure out the best sized animals to buy for the fair with our July 30 weigh-in target date. The change is to ensure our buyers are provided a good quality product and small and extra heavy swine do not resell well.
