1 Gallon's Good News Save October Newsletter Greetings, I hope that this edition of Gallon's Good News finds each of you and your family on a successful journey through the school year. As the Holiday Season fast approaches and the school year moves forward, let's continue to embrace a spirit and commitment of hope, optimism, and love for learning. Please know that we continue to recognize that the great work of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools has and continues to be achieved on the backs of each you as a stakeholder and supporter of public education. One again, I am honored and humbled to personally thank you all for the tremendous work you continue to do on behalf of our students and community. Let s go! 2 Chicago Panel Discussion on Educational Equity Dr. Gallon traveled to Chicago to engage with a great panel and follow up to discussion on educational equity among poor students of color. He was greeted by educators from around the country with the same passion and commitment to educational equality for all children. Scott Lake Groundbreaking Dr. Gallon had an exciting morning at Scott Lake Elementary, his neighborhood elementary school that his children attended nearly 25 years ago. At hand, he was present for "breaking ground" on new school buildings and enhancing educational environments and technological resources for our children. Dr. Gallon gave commendation to the Superintendent and his staff for sharing information about on-time, under budget projects. The new building is scheduled for completion in August 2018.

3 City of Miami Gardens Health Foundation Dr. Gallon met with the City of Miami Gardens and the Health Foundation to discuss the Miami Gardens Live Healthy Initiative Partnership and Educational Compact. He is looking forward to a great partnership to improve the healthy living and learning of our students and residents. Student Success Centers Dr. Gallon hosted a meeting to provide an update to community stakeholders regarding the Student Success Centers and related discipline policies. A special thanks was given to Ms. Valtena Brown, Mr. Luis Diaz, and Mr. Theron Clark and their team by Dr. Gallon, for the update on the Student Success Centers and other initiatives to support at-risk students in the District.This meeting provided an opportunity to engage members of the community including the NAACP and PACT who have been actively involved in this work.

4 Carol City Senior High vs. Southridge Dr. Gallon attended the Carol City Chiefs football game to support student athletes at the Mecca against Southridge Senior High Role Models Norland Elementary

5 Dr. Gallon stopped by Norland Elementary and gave a few words to male students as they were inducted into the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. This induction was an exceptionally positive one for Dr. Gallon because the sponsor of this project happened to be one of his former elementary and high school students who happily extended the invitation. He gracefully sent his well wishes to each of the young men on their pathway toward educational success and positivity. Mr. Ira D. Hall Recognition Dr. Gallon was excited to recognize and honor Mr. Ira D. Hall for his leadership, generosity, and commitment to our students. Through Mr. Hall s dedication and support, nearly 13,000 M-DCPS students experienced the historical blockbuster films Selma and Hidden Figures. An accomplished businessman and philanthropist in his own right, Mr. Hall is the Chair of the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center. The M-DCPS students and community are greatly appreciative of Mr. Hall and were honored to salute him.

6 He has supported students from County Line to Homestead. New York Discussion In a recent trip to New York City, Dr. Gallon participated in a great discussion about education as a civil right for poor and minority children. He was also able to hear and discuss perspectives on the education of urban students with different minds from around the country. District 1 Norland Town Hall

7 Dr. Gallon continued his District 1 Town Hall Meetings held at Norland Senior High. There, he spoke with parents and the community around issues concerning the education of children and uplift of our community. Dr. Gallon's outlook on excellence is that it requires transparency and a willingness to engage all stakeholders Role Model Tie Tying Ceremony Dr. Gallon offered greetings and words of encouragement to the newly inducted members of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project at Scott Lake Elementary. He also had the honor to join Congresswoman and 5000 Role Models Founder, Frederica Wilson, as she gave the keynote address and inspired these young men to achieve greatness.

8 Miami Gardens Seniors Dr. Gallon was pleased to visit the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex where he provided updates to the senior citizens of Miami Gardens regarding education and related issues of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

9 Carol City Community Conversation Dr. Gallon hosted a great community conversation regarding HB 7069, Schools of Hope Grant Award, and the overall plan and support to improve student performance and achievement at Carol City Senior High School. He was grateful to all who came out to support. Dr. Gallon also announced the receipt of an additional $2.4 million dollars for Carol City Senior to support school improvement efforts as a result of Miami- Dade County Public Schools receiving the Schools of Hope Grant Award of which the District received 5 of the 11 awarded statewide.

10 Special thanks to Principal Jamarv Dunn, his administration, Region Superintendent Jose Bueno, and region staff for providing valuable information to parents and community members. Board Advocacy Trip Dr. Gallon was proud to join fellow Board Members and the Superintendent on recent advocacy trip to Tallahassee to make the case for public education in Miami-Dade Community Public Schools. 11 Dr. Gallon continued the tradition he established last school year in District 1 by hosting a great event celebrating the achievement and success of our students at the District 1 Student of the Month Recognition Ceremony. It is always a pleasure when members of the educational and community village come together to recognize our students. Principal Today Breakfast As a former principal in the District for 10 years, Dr. Gallon appreciates and

12 has high regards for the role and responsibility of school principals. He was honored to support community awareness of the principal's role through the Principal Today program. This program and partnership provides a great opportunity for business and community stakeholders to serve as principals for a day in M-DCPS schools and learn more about the invaluable work principals, school leaders, and employees do on a daily basis. Parkview Academic Pep Rally There was nothing but energy and excitement at Parkview Elementary with Embracing Girl Power, Miami Gardens and M-DCPS Police, AETNA, and the Parkview Elementary School family. Dr. Gallon was excited to attend the Academic Pep Rally event to celebrate education and commit to high levels of achievement for students. 13 Dr. Gallon spent time meeting and speaking with members of the District's transportation staff and AFSCME unit. As listening leads to learning, it is critical that every voice in the District is heard and that all perspectives are considered. Upcoming Events
