3 Introduction Like Mulan, our RHA is sometimes regarded as this organization that can t get work done, but, with Jim as an advisor, climbing that metaphorical post with weights on a rope becomes a bit easier. Jim Hague is wonderful at what he does. Day in and day out, he constantly inspires students to put themselves out there to help their community become something better. Jim is always there with a snarky quip like Mushu, and provides the group with just the right amount of luck like Cri-Kee. Jim helps all of us recognize our worth, and in turn brings Honor to us all. Jim asks his students to think and dream bigger than they thought possible, and works to support them as they make those big dreams become reality. - Kayls Jim has a true heart for working with his students. He doesn t complain about the evening work required with advising. Students love Jim and want to be on exec boards that work with him. I ve had the opportunity to work in an advising capacity with Jim during my time at Ball State. He s really challenged me to be a better advisor. When I think of who my advising mentor is, Jim is the first person who comes to mind. I strive to be as great of an advisor as Jim is to his students. - Nicole 5

7 Jim in Action I appreciate that Jim always makes time for his students! I can think of three times when he s gotten dinner with me for example. He s a consummate professional and is a fountain of information for any student that wishes to speak with him. He shows constant patience for the student leaders he works with. - Cody I look up to him as a mentor. I think he s an inspiration when it comes to certain things. People used to tell me that I would say his name at least once a day. I truly admire him as an advisor. If you do something wrong, he won t publicly criticize you, he will instead pull you aside to have a conversation with you. - Jacob Mulan to Shang: Would you like to stay for dinner? 8 Letter of Support 1 October 4, 2017 To GLACURH, Regional Board of Directors, NCCs and NRHH-CCs: It is my pleasure to write a letter of support for James Jim Hague, nominee for the GLACURH Regional Advisor of the Year. I have known Jim for the past seven years as he has served our Housing and Residence Life program as the Assistant Director for Student Leadership Development. I am his direct supervisor. Jim is responsible for serving as the primary advisor for RHA, NRHH, SAT, NSLS and our departmental conduct boards. Particularly our RHA and NRHH chapters are strong, effective and healthy organizations thanks to Jim s leadership as an advisor. He also coordinates all of our summer conferences and leads some departmental assessment initiatives. Jim is a talented advisor of student leaders and student groups. He has had a variety of experiences working closely with talented student leaders as well as advising small and large groups. As an advisor, Jim is able to lead groups to conclusion, hear and incorporate diverse views and work well with those who can be difficult. He is an advocate of and for students and he is able to balance his opinion with what is right and best for a group. He is comfortable with his role as an advisor and is more concerned about accomplishing tasks for the good of an organization than he is about how others may be viewing him. What I most appreciate about Jim is that he is an advisor because of what he does and not because he considers himself a leader by virtue of his title or position. He is a working advisor with students and students really learn from him! Our residence hall directors and graduate students also learn a great deal from him as they observe Jim advise, particularly in gnarly situations. I believe we are producing excellent advisors for our professions because Jim works to guide and refine their advising skills. Jim is a very accepting and understanding man. In his many interactions with students, professional staff, faculty, alumni and administrators Jim has always conducted himself with warmth, grace, respect and genuine engagement. He values the diversity of people and thought and conducts his formal and informal interactions with others with genuineness and appreciation. These skills and attributes epitomize a superb and effective adviser. Jim is a very insightful man and his excellent communication and organizational skills give him a great deal of respect and confidence. He solicits and readily accepts feedback and criticism for self improvement. He makes very good decisions as an advisor and a professional, especially during the most difficult of times. His ability to handle a variety of tasks well and to completion is also indicative of his ability to handle stress and pressure. Jim has a good grasp of what is important, what is urgent and what can wait. He is very even tempered and does not get upset about the little things or the things he cannot control. Jim Hague has the full support of the Office of Housing and Residence Life as nominee for the GLACURH Regional Advisor of the Year. I believe you will find him to be a terrific and leader and advisor, one who is effective and enjoyable!! 9 Letter of Support Dear GLACURH, Regional Board of Directors, NCC s, and NRHH-CC s, It is my extreme pleasure to be able to submit this letter of support on behalf of Jim Hague and the Ball State University Residence Hall Association as they submit their bid for Advisor of the Year. Through his position as Assistant Director for Student Leadership at Ball State University, Jim is able to impact and influence numerous students as he guides them to be the best student leaders they can be. I personally connected with Jim in my role as the President of the Residence Hall Association for two years during my college career. Over the course of 2016/2017 academic year, RHA was ready to make some large and staggering changes to its structure and place on campus. Because of Jim s endless support and belief in the organization, RHA was able to go on to completely update their constitution, restructure their Executive Board, and hold events that did not seem possible two years ago when Jim first came into his position. Jim s advising style is one that is honest, caring, but not overwhelming. He allows students to talk and work through their problems and ideas without being heavy-handed with his opinion. His passion for student achievement and involvement is apparent in every event he organizes and role he takes on. He constantly searches for ways to enhance the experience for student leaders on campus so that they may truly benefit from their experience at Ball State. His openness and understanding makes him someone that students go to in times of need, and are also excited to share great news with. Jim creates opportunities for students to learn and process while also allowing us to fail just enough to understand where we went wrong. In RHA, Jim constantly pursues opportunities for the organization to connect with the larger campus. The Student Government Association and RHA had a struggling relationship for many years at Ball State, causing grief for many in both organizations. This was an area of conflict that seemed that it may never be resolved due to pure lack of understanding on both sides. Jim took on the role of mediator in this situation, helping both organizations to understand the perspective of the other, and allow the two groups to come together in a respectful and honest conversation about the future of their relationship. Because of Jim s keen understanding of others and his passion for student leadership, both organizations were able to come to an understanding and are now better able to serve the campus in which they reside. As an advisor, Jim gives his complete all to his students, making their experiences influential and educational, but also enjoyable. His bright personality and endless sass makes him a person, students connect to and admire.
