1 HAMILTON COUNTY EXTENSION 4-H FAMILY NEWSLETTER Dear 4-H Family: March 2016 Cheryll Entriken Hamilton County Extension County Youth Coordinator Intermediate 4-H Legislator Day is scheduled for March 22nd. Be sure to get your application turned in so you can be considered to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about our state. Application forms are posted on the web at: extension.iastate.edu/hamilton. If you have more questions, contact me. The Hamilton County Communication Competition will be held Saturday, April 23rd this year. Educational presentations, Working Exhibits, and Extemporaneous Speaking will take place at the Asbury Methodist Church Educational Building. Sign up with your leaders, so judging schedules can be made. You have many opportunities to attend project workshops and upcoming summer activities are on the drawing board. Be sure you access all options open to you and continue your growth in the 4-H program. Try a new project area this year or attend a workshop. Remember you can access the 4-H Project Hot Sheets online at The winter season is still upon us, in case of cancellations or postponements, listen to KQWC. 2 Food & Nutrition Workshop Saturday, March 5th 1:00 p.m.- E. O. The March Food & Nutrition Workshop will be held at the Extension Office on Saturday, March 5th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Everyone must sign up by Wed. March 2nd and cost is $3. Remember your aprons and if you have long hair to pull it back into a ponytail. The 2016 County Fair CHALLENGE RECIPE will be released at this meeting. Sewing Workshop Tuesday, March 8th 6:00 p.m.- E. O. Participants Please bring the following items with you: Sewing Machine & Accessories Basic Sewing Kit: New Sewing Machine Needles, straight pins, seam ripper, fabric cutting scissors, regular Coats and Clark thread to match fabric. First Year Participants: Apron Group: you will continue your apron projects started last month. If you did not attend last month s meeting this was the supply list: ROBOTICS Monday, March 1st- 6:30 p.m. at E.O. All 4-H ers are invited to these workshops. We will work on Designs & programming These sessions involve building with Lego components plates, bricks, axles, wheels & gears, connectors, bushings and bands. It teaches the kids how to build with the bricks, work with axles, wheels and gears to keep stuff spinning, to follow directions and program their bricks to carry out actions they want accomplished. Hamilton County Beef Banquet March 7th 6:00 p.m. Hamilton County Cattlemen have scheduled their annual Beef Banquet for Monday, March 7th at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in the Show Arena. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner being served at 6:30 p.m. 4-H Beef exhibitors are being invited as guests of the Hamilton County Cattlemen. McCall s pattern #M yards of Cotton fabric 1/2 yard of contrast cotton fabric Second Year & Beyond: Bring your Basic Sewing Kit and Machine. Pam will have additional supplies for you to purchase. 3 WEBSTER CITY CLOVER KIDS Tuesday, March 8th The next Webster City Clover Kids program will be held on Tuesday, March 8 th from 3:30 5:30 p.m. at the Pleasant View School gym. Bottle Animals - Calves, Sheep, Goats The next meeting for the Bottle Animals is scheduled for Sunday, March 20 at 1 pm in the Ed Prince Building at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds Photography Workshop Saturday, March 12 9:30-11:30 DUE April 1st applications for County SCHOLARSHIPS Due April 1st Due June 1st Senior 4-H ers (12th Grade) are reminded that their County Scholarship Applications are DUE April 1st. The March Photography Workshop will be held at the Extension Office on Saturday, March 12th from 9:30 11:30 p.m. We will be introducing the participants to the 2016 Photo Challenge Shadows for the 2016 Hamilton County Fair. Bring your camera, flash card, batteries and owners manual for your camera. Come dressed according to the weather. We will be outside for 2 hours so dress warm, old shoes or if snowy; boots, gloves, hats, etc. Horse Project Meeting Sunday, March 20th 2:00 p.m. Extension Office Horse Project Leaders will be holding project meetings in March, April, and May to discuss various horse topics including safety, horse care, horse evaluation, and tack and equipment. Members must attend at least one horseless project meeting and at least three riding clinics this year. Riding clinics will begin at the end of May. 4 DISCOVER TWIN CITIES TRIP The 2016 Intermediate Discover Twin Cities Trip will be taking place June 6th-8th in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On this trip youth will have the opportunity to meet 7th & 8th grade 4-H ers from eight counties (Marshall, Boone, Story, Hardin, Webster, Wright, Humboldt, and Hamilton) all while discovering the many great attractions of the Twin Cities. Hamilton County 4-H Foundation will be providing a $ scholarship to those who choose to participate in this trip, if they participate in Out of County Interviews on Sunday, March 20 th, 5:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. For any questions regarding this trip please contact Cheryll Entriken, or entriken@iastate.edu Registrations are available on our web site: COMMUNICATIONS HELP SESSION Wednesday, April 13th Front & Center You will be learning tips on effective Communication Skills. These tips will help those who are planning on participating in the County Communication Competition on April 23rd. This Communication Help Session will be by appointment starting at 4:30 p.m. Call the Extension Office at , if you want help with your presentation for County Communications on April 23rd INTERMEDIATE 4-H LEGISLATIVE MARCH 20, 2016 OUT of COUNTY INTERVIEWS The Hamilton County 4-H Foundation will be hosting their Out of County Interviews on Sunday, March 20 beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the Extension Office Meeting Room. Interviews will be conducted in order as participants sign in. The Foundation Board wish to encourage all youth who are planning on participating in the Discover Twin Cities Trip, State 4-H Conference, State 4-H Camps, Photo Camp and Regional 7 Robotics Camp to attend these interviews in order to receive funding towards their registrations fees Cheryll will take 4-H ers in 7 & 8th grade down to Des Moines to meet with State Legislators, tour the Capital and go to the Hall of Pride on Tuesday, March 22. If you are interested in going, please fill out the 4-H Legislative Day Application and turn it into Cheryll by March 1st!. Adults may go too. Registration form is on our website: extension.iastate.edu/hamilton County Communications April 23rd The annual County Communications Competitions will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at the Asbury Methodist Educational Building in Webster City. 5 CWF Participants Sunday, March 13 3:00 p.m. - Orientation Meeting. This is very important to attend as you hear the expectations, meet the other participants, and learn about our nation s capital. Meeting date is March 13 at the Webster County Extension Office at 3 p.m. A parent needs to attend so they know what is said and expected from the participants. Before the March meeting please be thinking about exchanges that can be traded with other states while we participate in CWF. Examples would be pins or stickers representing Iowa. A committee will be formed to work on this. A movie committee to bring dvd s for the bus will also be made at the March meeting. Aerospace Project Meeting Tuesday, March 15th 6:30 8:30 p.m. Aerospace Project Meeting on Tuesday, March 15th at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. Youth will have the opportunity to explore the basic concepts about aeronautics and build their kites for our kite flying contest.
