3 3 FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT Clinical Ethics Fellowships, University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics The University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) invites applications for six paid Clinical Ethics Fellowships in Bioethics, starting in September The fellows will spend one year performing clinical bioethics activities (case consultation, teaching, organizational/clinical initiatives, and clinical bioethics research) in the JCB affiliated hospitals. Through the JCB, Fellows will have numerous opportunities for multi-disciplinary bioethics networking, educational opportunities, and access to a wide range of clinical bioethics expertise in a variety of health care settings. The ideal candidates will hold a graduate degree in bioethics or have a professional degree with significant bioethics training, and will have had some previous experience in clinical bioethics, including consultation and teaching. Applicants will be ranked based on four criteria: 1) previous training in bioethics 2) experience in a clinical setting (preferably in clinical ethics) 3) commitment to a future in clinical ethics 4) interpersonal skills Graduate students must have completed their degree by start of fellowship. If currently enrolled in a degree program, students must have their supervisor send a letter confirming their graduation before the start of the fellowship. 4 4 GRADUATE STUDY IN BIOETHICS Graduate Study in Bioethics University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics We invite you to consider graduate studies in bioethics at the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics. Collaborative Program in Bioethics (CPB): The vision of the Collaborative Program in Bioethics is to strengthen capacity in interdisciplinary bioethics research. The CPB is a research-stream (master s and doctoral) program; students must apply and be admitted to one of the following collaborating units before being admitted to the CPB: Health Policy, Management and Evaluation; Law; Medical Science; Nursing; Philosophy; Public Health Sciences; and Religion. A thesis is normally required for completion of programs in these units. The deadline for applications to the CPB is March 31, As part of the CPB, all students complete courses in bioethics. For further information please visit: http: // Master of Health Science in Bioethics (MHSc): The vision of the MHSc in Bioethics is to develop capacity in bioethics education and clinical activities. This professional Masters Program enrols practising health professionals through the Institute of Medical Science. It is a course-only program delivered on a modular basis in 20 twoday sessions over a two-year period, plus a practicum. It does not require a thesis. For further information please visit:
5 5 TENURE-TRACK POSITION Bioethics Tenure-Track Position Université de Montréal Department of Social and Preventative Medicine The Université de Montréal has a strong commitment in research and graduate education in bioethics. Graduate interdisciplinary programs are offered with the collaboration of several departments and faculties. The Centre de recherche en éthique is a major focus of research activities. As such, a full-time, tenure-track position has become available. This appointment will be made in the Department of Social and Preventative Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, for purposes of teaching and student supervision in interdisciplinary bioethics programs of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The selected candidate will have to carry out research and supervise master s and PhD students, in relation to ethics of health policies and public health. Teaching activities will be mainly at the graduate level, but undergraduate teaching will be expected also. Requirements: The selected candidate must possess a PhD or the equivalent (or be close to completing one) in a field relevant to bioethics. Teaching and research experience in bioethics would be an asset. Candidates will be asked to provide evidence of their research interests in the pertinent field, and must be able to teach in both English and French. If the selected candidate has an insufficient knowledge of French, a reasonable delay will be given to aquire fluency. The starting date of this position is no later than May 31, The Université de Montréal offers a competitive salary and a complete range of fringe benefits. 6 6 INTERNSHIP Internship in Ethics in Leadership, The Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership Applications are invited from senior students in programs in any field relevant to ethics in leadership for an Internship sponsored by the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership. The successful candidate will have the experience necessary to use the period of Internship effectively, working with the Foundation in Calgary on research, program development and implementation, publications and community outreach. The Foundation is seeking an Intern who displays a deep understanding of ethics in leadership and public life together with imagination and creativity of thought, demonstrated experience in working with the community, strong organizational skills, superior writing skills and a personal commitment to the Foundation s mission. The stipend for the nine-month period is $27,000 plus an allowance for expenses not to exceed $3000. In certain circumstances, and by mutual agreement, the Internship period can be extended by up to three months.
