2 Institutional Retention by Degree Level and Race/Ethnicity Over the past 5 years, COL has had an average retention rate (from first year to second year) of 65.1%, ranging from a high of 71.2% to a low of 57.9%. These figures reflect the rigor of law school study, as well as the challenges undertaken by students who pursue a legal education as working adults with other significant commitments. In their first year, some students withdraw because they recognize that they do not have the time or level of commitment required to succeed in law study, while others are academically unsuccessful. The vast majority of students who enter their second year of law study at the Colleges of Law go on to graduate. Table 4. Graduation Rates do not include students who entered in a semester other than Fall, or transfer students, in accordance with federal guidelines. Graduation rates are based on the cohort of students who begin the JD program in the fall term. Students generally proceed as a cohort through the required courses of the 4-year program; on occasion, graduation may be delayed, such as when a student takes a leave of absence, must repeat academic work, or needs additional time to complete legal internship hours. Therefore, a 6-year graduation rate is provided once six years has elasped from the fall cohort start. TCS Education System, oir@tcsedsystem.edu 8 of 9 As of 5/15/17
9 and to Completion Students begin the Juris Doctor (JD) program in Fall or Spring semester. Generally, they complete the part-time program by the end of their fourth Fall or Spring semester; program completion depends on the number of elective units a student takes during Summer sessions.
