2 The first college chartered in the new nation, Washington College in 1782 was dedicated to cultivating responsible, educated citizen-leaders to guide the fledgling democracy. Today the ideals of that founding purpose hold true, and Washington College ranks among the nation s top liberal arts institutions. Located in Chestertown, Md., on the Chesapeake Bay s storied Chester River, the 120-acre campus breathes history, natural beauty and rural charm, yet it s only 75 miles from the urban hubs of Washington, D.C., Wilmington, Del., and Philadelphia.
