UK has 267 active patents, primarily in pharmaceuticals, plant biotechnology, and biomedical engineering; 27 patents were issued in FY 03. UK is ranked 36th among public research universities in research and development expenditures. An Equal Opportunity University Published by the UK Office of Institutional Research

2 January 2004 In compliance with KRS , I am pleased to provide you with the Fact Booklet, a compendium of current facts about the people and programs at the University of Kentucky. The fact booklet contains statistics on enrollments, retention, research expenditures, faculty salaries, and many other items of interest to our stakeholders and the general public. Also included is a summary of the Operating Budget. During the past year, the University of Kentucky has established ambitious goals in its quest to become one of the 20 best public research universities in the nation. In June 2003, the Board of Trustees approved the University s new strategic plan The Dream & the Challenge. The new blueprint will guide the institution s strategic initiatives for a three-year period. The relatively short timeframe will enable faculty, staff and administrators to respond flexibly to the demands of a rapidly changing global environment. One of our most important strategic goals is to attract and graduate outstanding students. Last fall, over one-third of our freshman class presented a high school GPA of 3.8 or higher. The number of Governor s Scholars enrolled at the University has tripled since And this year s graduation rate increased for the sixth consecutive year and set a new university record. The University of Kentucky s research efforts have expanded considerably since the passage of the Postsecondary Education Improvement Act commonly referred to as House Bill 1 in With intensive, focused effort and support from the Council on Postsecondary Education s Research Challenge Trust Funds, total research and development expenditures increased from $161 million in 1998 to $236 million in 2002, a 47 percent increase. The university is currently ranked 36th among public institutions in total research and development expenditures, up from 46th in 1997.

3 One of our great concerns is our ability to provide competitive salaries to attract and retain distinguished faculty. In , the average salary paid to our faculty was the lowest of our benchmark institutions. We simply must find ways to increase faculty salaries even during these difficult fiscal times. To provide the space needed for our teaching, research and service programs, several new facilities are now under construction the Biomedical/Biological Sciences Research Building, the Linda and Jack Gill Building, the Center for Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, and the UK Center for Rural Health. In addition, the University s first new residence halls in 30 years are under construction and expected to accommodate students by fall Reconstruction of the Main Building continues in the aftermath of the devastating fire in I have previously noted that national recognition is not an end in itself; rather, it is a product of excellence in fulfilling our mission and serving the Commonwealth. The University of Kentucky is committed to discovering, sharing and applying new knowledge to improve the lives of those living in Kentucky and the world outside our borders. Sincerely, Lee T. Todd, Jr. President
