1 Summer 2018 Dear Non-CPS School Parent: As you may know, the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) currently utilizes the Northwestern Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) for the eligibility/selection process for students applying to schools with academic requirements, including, but not limited to, CTE-College and Career Academies, International Baccalaureate High Schools, Magnet High Schools, Military Academies, and Selective Enrollment Elementary and High Schools. The NWEA MAP will be offered free of charge for students who did not attend a CPS school during the school year, are not currently enrolled at a CPS school, and will be applying for the school year to grades 5-9 for schools with academic requirements. The test is a two-part assessment: math and reading. Typically, the test is administered on two separate days; if you like, you can indicate your preference to have your child take both sections of the test on the same date. The test will be administered on September 15-16, 2018; September 22-23, 2018; and September 29-30, There will be two sessions offered on each of these days. In order for students to be scheduled to test, the registration form must be received by the Office of Access and Enrollment no later than September 7, The test will be offered at four sites: Curie Metropolitan High School, Lane Tech High School, Lindblom Math and Science Academy, and Westinghouse College Preparatory High School. Students will be scheduled for the test location closest to their home address. PLEASE NOTE that your child cannot be considered for any school with minimum eligibility requirements if he/she does not take the NWEA MAP that is administered by the Chicago Public Schools system. Please complete the attached NWEA MAP registration form and submit it to the Office of Access and Enrollment, indicating your preferred test weekend, as well as whether you want your child to take the test on one day or two. Note that indicating your preferred test weekend does not guarantee that your child will be scheduled for that weekend. Students will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. CPS will put test notification letters in the U.S. mail, to the home address on the registration form, one week prior to the student s first test date. Reminder notifications will be sent as well, via robocall and . Please carefully review the NWEA MAP application and related material. Should you have additional questions after you review this information, please contact the Office of Access and Enrollment at or oae@cps.edu. Sincerely, Tony T. Howard Executive Director Attachment TTH:kbh

3 NWEA MAP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Why does my child have to take the NWEA MAP? The NWEA MAP is used to determine eligibility for programs with academic criteria. After your child takes the NWEA MAP, his/her scores will be used to determine whether or not your child is eligible to participate in the assessment and/or selection process for the schools in which you are interested. If your child s NWEA MAP scores meet the minimum requirements for the programs/schools in which you are interested, you will then proceed with any additional requirements for those programs/schools. FOR EXAMPLE, if you are interested in the Selective Enrollment High Schools, and your child s NWEA MAP scores meet or exceed the minimum eligibility for the Selective Enrolment High Schools, you will THEN submit your application and schedule your child to take the Selective Enrollment admissions exam. If your child does not take the NWEA MAP AND the Selective Enrollment admissions exam AND submit the application for the Selective Enrollment schools, your child cannot be considered for the Selective Enrollment schools. How do I submit my registration form? Your completed form should be scanned and ed to oaecommunications@cps.edu, or mailed/hand-delivered to the Chicago Public Schools, Office of Access and Enrollment, 42 W. Madison St., Garden Level, Chicago, IL ed forms will receive an confirmation of receipt, and parents who submit forms in person will receive a receipt at the time of submission. Mailed forms should include a self-addressed, stamped postcard/envelope, which will be mailed back to you as a receipt. Registration forms must be RECEIVED by the Office of Access and Enrollment no later than September 7, 2018, in order for students to take the NWEA MAP in September Does my child have to take the NWEA MAP if he/she wants to apply to Selective Enrollment schools for grades K-4? Students applying to grades K through 4 do not have minimum eligibility requirements and do not have to take the NWEA MAP. When will I be notified of the time and location for testing? CPS will put test notification letters in the U.S. mail, to the home address on the registration form, one week prior to the student s first test date. Reminder notifications will be sent as well, via robocall and . Will I be able to reschedule my child s test date/time/location? Capacity and resources are limited. Few rescheduling requests, if any, will be accommodated. How long does the NWEA MAP test take? All NWEA MAP assessments are designed to be untimed for all students. The NWEA MAP mathematics test is roughly 52 items in length. The NWEA MAP reading test is roughly 42 items in length. It usually takes students about an hour to complete each subject. When will I receive my child s NWEA MAP results? Your child s test notification letter will contain an Activation Code that you will use to open a GoCPS online application account (go.cps.edu). Approximately two weeks after your child has completed both NWEA MAP tests (reading and math), you will be able to view and print his/her scores via the online portal. Will I receive an NWEA MAP score report? No. Your child is taking the NWEA MAP solely for the purposes of determining his/her eligibility to be considered for selected Chicago public schools/programs for the school year. The eligibility process only uses the student s NWEA MAP percentiles in reading and math. Therefore, the Chicago Public Schools will only provide you with your child s reading and math NWEA MAP percentiles. My child has an IEP or 504 Plan. Will his/her accommodations be honored? CPS will only honor test accommodations for finalized Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans from public school districts. Applicable test accommodations described in Section 10 (c) of the student s IEP or 504 Plan will be made available. Please be aware that only certain accommodations are available for the NWEA MAP due to its specific nature. OAE testing specialists will review testing accommodations for all eligible students prior to test scheduling. My child has a pending special education evaluation. How will his/her testing be handled? Students with pending evaluations will not be scheduled until the evaluation has been completed and a final determination has been made. OAE will work with the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services to determine when pending CPS evaluations have been completed. OAE will contact parents of students with pending evaluations in other districts to determine next steps. Why is OAE asking for consent to release my child s final school year grades? Many programs require grades for the eligibility and/or selection process. For families that consent to release this information, OAE will contact students current schools to request the final grades. Please note that if your child s current school does not furnish his/her final grades, or if your child s school is not listed on the Non-CPS School Code list, you may be responsible for submitting these grades to OAE by the December 2018 deadline. If CPS students take the test in the spring, and private/parochial school students take the test in the fall, how can you compare those scores? Is my child at a disadvantage? Spring testers will have percentiles that are representative only of how students rank against other spring NWEA MAP testers nationally. Students who test in the fall will only be compared to other students who test on the NWEA MAP in the fall. This allows for fair comparison of scores. For more on NWEA's national norming sample that was used to derive the percentile scores, please visit and refer to the links for the 2015 norms. For general information on what percentiles represent, visit
