3 ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Welcome! With great enthusiasm, we invite you to join us in the 2 nd National Conference on Simulation in India on 21 st & 22 nd June 2013, at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre. You will agree that this would be the most promising and stimulating conference on simulation and would offer you a panoramic range of educational and networking opportunities. Historical: Simulation has emerged as an innovative teaching programme. Traditionally, teaching has been conducted in the class rooms and in the wards by the patients bed side. In the class rooms, teaching by writing on a black-board or through power-point has been adapted. At patient s bed side, small groups of students were taught how to elicit clinical symptoms and signs. Simulation does not replace but supplants and augments this traditional teaching. Shift in Paradigm: We are aware of the list of skills and cognitive knowledge to be learnt by students before they graduate out. This includes CPR, Defibrillation, Resuscitation in shock, Treatment of toxicological emergencies etc. It is axiomatic that, one will not teach, for example CPR/ delivery of shock (Defibrillation) on a living patient. The students are taught the same curricula using simulation. Patient safety: When a novice tries to learn on real patients, there will be a likelihood of trauma and pain caused to the patient. While practicing intubation on a patient, it is likely that student may break the teeth or lacerate the tongue even when supervised, with doubtful success at intubation in the first attempt. But, a simulated practice on airway simulators, done beforehand, improves chances of success in the real field and lessens chances for injury.

4 Creating Educational Experiences even for an uncommon Emergency/Clinical Presentation: A medical / dental/ paramedical student may not have had exposure to all commonly occurring medical emergencies/ scenarios. When small batches of students go through role-play method of learning, through simulated scenarios, it is possible to teach the right approach to selected emergency / routine and procedural skills with Team Leadership. WHAT can be taught and HOW, Through Simulation?: In addition to practice on traditional mannequins, you will have the chance to practice in our simulated workshops, which have hi-fidelity interactive computerized mannequins, capable of talking and exhibiting physiological response. You will also be exposed to Virtual Reality Simulators, Ultrasound Simulators, Endoscopy Simulators, Surgical / Laparoscopic Simulators, the entire gamut of which will be exhibited in our stalls. You will also have the opportunity to interact with experts already using these simulators to decide on which of them would be appropriate for your institution. We chose the theme SIMULATED MEDICAL EDUCATION FOR EFFECTIVE PATIENT CARE to complement the present status of simulation in India with immense possibilities of enhancing Quality Education and Skills, not only in Medicine but also in Nursing, Dental and Paramedical fields and in Industry. Maximum participants 30 per session The Pre-conference Workshops will be held as three parallel sessions. Delegates can choose to participate in a maximum of two sessions one in the forenoon (9.00 am-12 noon) and one in the afternoon (1.00pm-4.00 pm).

9 Post Conference Workshop ( ) AHLS ( Advanced HAZMAT Life 2 days - Support) Provider Course 23rd and 24th June 2013 AHLS Instructor Course 1 day- 25th June 2013 AHLS Courses Advanced HAZMAT [Hazardous Materials] Life Support (AHLS) was developed by the Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center (AEMRC), a Center of Excellence at The University of Arizona College of Medicine, and is offered in collaboration with the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT). AHLS Provider Course The AHLS Provider program is a 16 hour, two-day course that gives health professionals a timely and effective response strategy, in the medical management of HAZMAT incidents. Participants will receive a four-year verification status upon successful completion of the course. This course covers information about a vast array of hazardous materials, including pesticides, corrosives, toxic inhalants and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents. The AHLS Provider course trains the participants to: Rapidly assess HAZMAT patients Recognize toxic syndromes (toxidromes) Apply the poisoning treatment paradigm Identify and administer specific antidotes

10 AHLS Instructor Course The AHLS Instructor program is a six-hour, one-day course to prepare you to offer AHLS in your area. Participants will be able to: Define and demonstrate AHLS principles and adult education theory Properly conduct lectures to facilitate learning AHLS Instructors can then offer any of the AHLS courses in their area with a team of instructors. Poster Presentations Poster presentations on Themes mentioned on simulation are welcome. The content may be original research work or concepts /reviews. Registration of atleast one author for the conference is mandatory. A soft-copy has to be sent by to simulationcenter@srmuniv.ac.in before 20th May. The scientific committee will review your work and you will be intimated through about the acceptance status of the poster. Accepted posters should be printed in 1 metre x 1 metre dimension.
