2 1. Call to Order Donna Fishkin called the meeting to order. 2. Approval of the March 12, 2013 CASSC Minutes The minutes of the March 12, 2013 CASSC meeting were approved as submitted. 3. Presentations Dr. Montoya and CASSC Chair, Donna Fishkin, recognized and thanked the outgoing CASSC members for their service while on CASSC ( ). Donna Fishkin also introduced new College CASSC member Professor Anita Pittman from the School of Nursing. Comments by the College Provost Legislative Matters Half-Penny Referendum The half-penny referendum bill continues progressing in the house of the senate. Developmental Education The house bill requires institutions to: Offer summer boot camps Accelerated mechanisms Contextualized courses and Courses must be divided by modules The senate bill proposes the elimination of developmental education. Reaffirmation Steering Committee The SACS Reaffirmation Steering Committee met on Friday, April 5. The subcommittees provided a status report on the areas assigned to each of them. 2

3 5. School of Engineering & Technology Donna Fishkin introduced Richard White who presented the course user fee audit request for the School of Engineering and Technology. Fee increase request is to cover salaries for laboratory personnel and for materials, equipment, software licenses and miscellaneous expenses. Course User Fee Audit Year

7 6. School of Education Carol Tulikangas introduced Susan Neimand who presented the request to add a new course to replace EDF4931 which was offered as an experimental course in the Spring semester. This course is intended for teachers only who need to update their teaching credentials. This is a post-baccalaureate course not attached to any program. The new course will be offered during Summer A, when most teachers are available to take the course. Add New Course Eff. Course No. Course Title Credits Campus Term EDF4XXX Data-Driven Instructional Change New Course Request 3 1,2,3,5,6,7, Course Description: This course on data-driven decision-making is designed for current teachers. The student will learn to set measurable goals, collect and analyze data, implement instructional interventions, and align practice to school improvement. Recommended Preparation: Bachelor's degree in education. Curriculum Action Rationale: Request to change the existing experimental course (EDF4931) for teacher re-certification to a permanent SCNS course number. The course is intended for current teachers only, through program code (Non-degree Teacher Re-certification). UNANIMOUS APPROVAL 33 IN FAVOR 0 OPPOSED 7. School of Justice Mattie Roig-Watnik introduced Hector Garcia who presented the request to add two new elective courses to the A.S. in Criminal Justice. These courses are transferable to the BAS in Public Safety Management degree. Course DSC1XXX is specifically designed for the Emergency Management track. Add New Courses Eff. Course No. Course Title Credits Campus Term CJL1XXX Street Law 3 1,2,3,5,6,7, Course Description: This course will cover the evaluation, debate, and critical analysis of law and legal issues that affect individuals, their families, and communities. Students will learn about practical aspects of civil, criminal, constitutional, family, immigration, and consumer law in a diverse society with an orientation toward civic involvement in the local community. (3 hr. lecture) Curriculum Action Rationale: This Street Law course will be an elective course in the Associate in Science degree in the Criminal Justice (27012) program. This course will provide substantial information about law, democracy, and human rights through strategies that promote problem solving, critical thinking, cooperative learning, improve communication and conflict resolution skills for the ability to participate effectively in society. This course will also serve as a community guide to civic involvement by providing practical information about areas of the law that affect the daily lives of all Americans and US residents. Through case study, simulated legal exercises and small group exercises with analytical problems, this comprehensive framework is used to create a higher level of thinking to better deal with our dynamic democratic society. 7

CASSC Calendar Academic Year The CASSC Calendar for Academic Year was presented. 9. Announcements MDC Baseball Team Vicky Owles announced that the MDC baseball team is ranked #2 in the Nation. School of Education Susan Neimand announced that the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has accredited the four A.S. in Early Childhood Education programs. It is the first time the agency grants accreditation to multiple programs at an institution across the nation. Summer College CASSC Meetings - Donna Fishkin reminded faculty members who will be on leave during Summer A and B, to make sure they send notification and find a substitute to represent them at the May, June and July meetings. 10.
